Pickled walnuts. Where are my people?

Thanks to my late Dad, I was introduced to Opie's Pickled Walnuts at a young age, and I bloody love them (just finished off a plate of Stilton & PW). I managed to get hold of the port version this year - only the second time I've found them, and they're even nicer than the original. However - I've never met another person, in all my 60+ years, who likes them (other than Dad, of course), and most people seem unaware of their existence. So - where are you, my fellow pickled walnut fans? There must be other people buying them, or else they wouldn't be made/sold!

Love them. They are great as a garnish in a Martini, among other things.

I am absolutely here for pickled walnuts. My local Tesco didn't have any, so had to order three jars from well known online retailer. Have eaten them with cheese and leftover cold meat this week. I also use delia's recipe, although lately have gone to Clarissa Dickson-Wright's beef stew which has pickled walnuts, anchovies and treacle in it. Everyone loves it until you tell them what's in it!

Opies seem to have re-done the packaging recently. I get them in Waitrose; I think I've previously found them in Sainsbury's and small Delis.

My Mother introduced them to me, and and I often get her a jar as part of her Christmas present. The comparison to olives makes sense to me!!

Another new recruit to the PW club here,
had them with cold meat and Brussels sprout bubble on Boxing Day. Love them. Thanks for the thread OP

Really!! Doesn't the vinegar overpower?

No, but I'm partial to Picklebacks and Dirty Martinis. The more more brine the merrier!

Miffylou · 31/12/2024 14:36

I love pickled walnuts! Got some in Waitrose last week.

ladymalfoy45 · 31/12/2024 14:41

Love them. Really love them . Especially on a bacon and cheese Staffordshire oatcake.

Framilode · 31/12/2024 14:46

I think they are a northern thing. I am originally from Lancashire and everyone I knew used to eat them. I always buy them from Ocado. Delicious.

For those who are asking what they taste like: I think they are a fairly unique taste. Obviously pickled, so the immediate taste is vinegary. But after that there is a very complex, deeply savoury taste. There's a certain 'likeness' to olives or marmite, but having said that, I hate olives but love pickled walnuts! I guess it's a similarly deep flavour.

The texture is definitely not crunchy. The walnuts are pickled before the shells form, so they are firm but not hard, and fairly smooth.

I think they go really well with any cheese, or cold meat.

Beware: the black pickle juice stains everything. Don't leave an open jar on the tablecloth and then accidentally knock it over 😳.

This is why they so disappointed me. I tried them for the first time this year. I imagined them to be crunchy like ‘normal’ walnuts. They were exactly like a massive olive in texture and made me heave. Strangely, I love olives. I love Marmite. I love strong tasting savoury things. Pickled walnuts are far and away the worst thing I’ve ever put in my mouth.

Love them, always find them in Waitrose.

BeAzureAnt · 31/12/2024 15:06

My husband bloody loves them. He'll polish off a couple jars during the Christmas holidays.

JaffavsCookie · 31/12/2024 15:08

Lifelong member of the club here. We make our own now, this thread has just prompted me to go a get a jar to “taste”. Gorgeous little black nuggets of loveliness.

JaffavsCookie · 31/12/2024 15:09

They are also very good in a beef stew.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 31/12/2024 15:10

Meet my SIL. I once made her pickled walnuts when our green grocer had them in. She still talks about them 40 years on.

emmax1980 · 31/12/2024 15:17

Never tried but I like picked onions and cabbage etc

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 31/12/2024 16:11

Ooh! Yes! I adore a pickled walnut. My grandfather had them on the table every Boxing Day, as I recall. I do as well. Nothing like a plate of cold goose or turkey, some left over stuffing and a few PWs. Yum!

Lurkingandlearning · 31/12/2024 16:35

They are good in a bacon sandwich

Damnloginpopup · 31/12/2024 17:00

Yep. Always enjoyed them. Sainsbury's carry them..Tesco used to, not sure now.

Farm shop locally has them at an extortionate price.

AMomentOfTruth · 31/12/2024 18:44

You have reminded me I haven’t even opened the jar I bought this year (from Booths) and we have just finished the turkey 😥Looking on the bright side I feel a beef stew coming on….

JC03745 · 31/12/2024 18:48

I received a jar as a substitute once and had no idea how to eat them or what to do with them. FAR too vinegary to eat on their own, but might be passable with cheeses. I then found the recipe below and the vinegar really cuts through the fat. I don't add the pastry, and add more veg, but now find them very palatable.

Me! Me! I love them. And pleased to have found my tribe!

roobyred · 31/12/2024 18:54

I'd like to join your Club. I've got a jar from Sainsbury's in my cupboard. Where did you get the port ones?
