does anyone make new years resolutions anymore?

I do normally make them, last year i vowed to lose weight which i did, the year before i quit social media for a year, which i did.

This year my aim is to work on me, stop being a doormat, stop running round organising everyone else and basically don't get involved in things that really are not my issue.

I do! The usual ones about losing weight and improving my fitness, and then one or two about taking up a new language or musical instrument.

This year, I'm hoping to learn how to solve Rubik's cubes!

I seldom achieve all my NY resolutions, but I feel that setting them each year helps to stop me drifting off track to much.

GameOfJones · 30/12/2024 17:11

Mine is to do more yoga. I do make a resolution each year but try to make it achievable. Previous ones have been to read more (which I stuck to and has become an ingrained habit), to cook new recipes, or go on a walk every weekend etc.

DarkAndTwisties · 30/12/2024 17:17

I choose ones for each month of the year. So for example, I haven't done this 2025's yet but it might be 10,000 steps a day in Jan, cook 5 new recipes in Feb etc.

I find these easier than all year ones, and my thinking is that they might individually start some better habits (like walking more) which continue beyond the specific month.

Mine this year are

  1. Get my weight back into single figures
  2. Start parkrun again
  3. Listen to 400 albums (inspired by the listen to 1000 album thread)
  4. Get my 500 geocache milestone
  5. Read 30 books.

Should be achievable- I have started the music one early. The weight one will be the hardest.

FelixtheAardvark · 30/12/2024 19:23

Never made any. See no reason to do so.

GaraMedouar · 30/12/2024 19:24

I love making New Year’s resolutions and hope they stick - obviously lose weight, get fitter, learn a language and Dry January as always!!! I magically stop stuffing my face at 11:59 and 59 seconds 😁

paranoiaofpufflings · 30/12/2024 19:26

I make new year resolutions on my birthday rather than 1st January, so I'm making them to begin a new year of me.

Hohofortherobbers · 30/12/2024 19:27

I always commit to a dry Jan.

This year I'm going to also park run more regularly. Did my first in a long time last Saturday....ouch!

Also I want to learn to crochet.

Ohhhthedrama · 30/12/2024 19:28

My resolution this year is to spend more time watching TV in bed. I really feel it's realistic, and I'm going to 100% stick to it.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 30/12/2024 19:29

I have! I have 3:

(a) Face and body skincare routine morning and evening

(b) Stairs instead of lifts unless injured/ carrying something heavier than a rucksack

(c) Put everything in calendar and check it morning and evening

I stopped there to avoid overwhelm

username299 · 30/12/2024 19:30

I usually make a NYR. One year it was to stop buying mayonnaise and I still don't. I haven't got a clue about next year. Probably to look after myself as I haven't been very well.

BlackChunkyBoots · 30/12/2024 19:31

No. I don't because they don't last.

GiddyRobin · 30/12/2024 19:33

I just make fun ones, really. Things like reading or watching a certain series I've been meaning to, getting my nails done every 3 weeks rather than 4 (because I'm lazy). This year DH and I have decided to cook a dish from a different country every Saturday.

LegoHouse274 · 30/12/2024 19:38

I do a list of 10 each year but it's not all 'resolutions' in a traditional sense, it can include things I'm looking forward to doing like holiday in X place and so on. Then I review and see how many I did. It's usually 5-7 or so a year, I'm obviously over ambitious (and/or lazy tbh)!

BashfulClam · 30/12/2024 19:40

Sometimes but I am restarting my weight loss from 4th as I have a steak pie etc to have on New Year’s Day.

Wildywondrous · 30/12/2024 19:43

I usually plan to lose 5 stone but I've done it this year so my resolution is to keep it off, I'm going to weigh myself each week and put £10 into a sealed money tin if I've lost or maintained my weight.
I'll then have a nice pot to spend on clothes in next year's sales.

DeanElderberry · 30/12/2024 19:49

I only ever really made one, and try to stick to it. It was to be more intuitive, to trust my gut, to not always have to reason my way to conclusions.

I did make a non new-year resolution, back in the summer, to not volunteer for anything and to not take on any tasks. Since then I've ended up as chair of one community organisation, co-ordinator of a thing, and leader of another thing. So that's a big FAIL so far.

I'm not sure what my gut would suggest as a way to avoid this in future.

You can avoid it in the future by acknowledging the fact that it didn't 'just happen'.

brawhen · 30/12/2024 19:59

I do! I'm usually moderately successful.

This year

  • run 3 times a week, 1000km over the year
  • read 25 books
  • find some new recipes that everyone in the family likes well enough and involve vegetables (fussy teens, will have to do some trial & error and stay patient on this)
  • keep going with a new language I'm learning, and learn to read the (non-Latin) script
  • keep on keeping on at being organised at home, without going OTT
  • maintain weight (having lost a bit last year, but it is nothing dramatic)

So my last ones are consolidating stuff that I've done quite well at over recent years, but I'm happy with that.

MadmansLibrary · 30/12/2024 20:55

I do, but I've renamed them manifestations. 😂 DD and I are going to write ours down tomorrow and pin them on the fridge, to see how many we can achieve.

This is such a good idea. Added to the list!

avaritablevampire · 30/12/2024 22:48

Yes every year, and every year I've broken it by May / June although last year I excelled and broke it before January had finished Xmas Grin

Love this, so i'm going to pinch your idea Wildlywondrous!
