This is why I am not successful

Set myself a goal of getting fitter, particularly around improving my running.

Set myself a training plan and target. In the diary for today is a long run. Got dressed in running gear. Went outside. And Oh My God its freezing out! LIke properly, properly cold! That awful drizzly rain that soaks right through to your bones.

So instead I drove in my car to the supermarket, got some crisps to eat driving home and a pizza for lunch, which I am about to eat, followed by some left over sponge pud.

This. This mindset is why I am not one of life's great success stories 😁

Can anyone relate?

Certainly can.

I only have to walk half an hr and am weeing in my knickers. Post menopause here.

Bet you wish you hadn't asked.

OhBumBags · 30/12/2024 13:14

I wouldn't have gone for the run, but I wouldn't have sabotaged with that lunch (as gorgeous as it sounds!)

It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

Could you find a happy inbetween if it happens again?

Chocolately · 30/12/2024 13:16

Maybe set smaller more easily achievable goals to start with, and build up?

AwakeNotThruChoice · 30/12/2024 13:16

Well I am a lot harder on myself than that!!

And I know the feeling of achieving something is well worth the graft As the poster above says, doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I would have gone for the run, then treated myself to some HEALTHY really nice food for lunch (if I needed an incentive)

TreesWelliesKnees · 30/12/2024 13:21

I get what you're saying, but it's the 'all or nothing' thinking that is the problem here. You had other options - Youtube exercise video indoors? No exercise but healthier food choices? Run anyway and get wet, and then reward yourself with one small treat for having been out in foul weather? If it's a struggle to do the long runs, set smaller targets.

TangerineClementine · 30/12/2024 13:23

What works for me is arranging to meet a friend for a run. Then I know I won't pull out as it would be letting down the friend.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 30/12/2024 13:26

Hahaha this 100% used to me.

I stopped thinking of it as optional - going for a run is something I had to do between X and X. 3 years into regular exercise and I have yet to 'want' to go for a run 🫠 (luckily there are non-running things I enjoy, but I've recently had to go back to running due to logistics and I don't like it!)

That's not right. I'm 62, have had 4 kids, and have no wee issues.

Go and see your GP!

SharpOpalNewt · 30/12/2024 13:34

I go to the gym as I only want to exercise outdoors in nice weather and when it's not too muddy. In the gym the "weather" is always the same.

You can see your GP all you like, it doesn't mean they will actually do anything. Or there may be months or years wait for treatment or surgery.

Eyewhisker · 30/12/2024 13:38

Is everything ok? It’s fine to not go for a run, but the rest sounds like an eating disorder and not how a happy person who feels they are valuable would behave.

It is difficult as all those crisps, and supermarket pizza have been designed to be irresistible and to give you a dopamine hit but they are not nourishing and not food.

You are worth so much more.

bluetonguegiraffe · 30/12/2024 13:39

Interested in the comments about my lunch being unhealthy! I was actually not meaning to make that contrast in my post, but can see how others saw it that way.
I don't see individual foods as healthy or unhealthy, just whole diets, and I am pretty intune with my appetite.

I do have low blood pressure and am slim so I do really feel the cold. Was hoping the food would warm me up enough to think about going out for a shorter run. Or yes, I might do a strength session later or /and start the first module of a dance style I want to learn this year. Funnily enough I normally like (short) runs in the rain but it just felt so hideous to your bones cold when I went out today.

I was meaning I don't have that killer drive super successful people have.

I do struggle to exercise alone. I do need to find a routine in which exercise is non-negotiable.

I had salad with it!

But seriously, I did have disordered eating 25 years ago but don't now. Thinking of food as healthy and unhealthy encourages disordered thinking around food that can lead to eating disorders. I am so glad I do not think about food like that anymore.

I eat what I want, when I want, and I am a healthy BMI and size 6. Because I am in tune with my appetite, and my body knows what to eat and when to stop.

You need to do your pelvic floor exercises! Follow Gusset Gripes ( I think that i the name, its Elaine Milller).

Fitness for me, and most of the people I know, is about inertia.

Once you legitimately start, after three or four times, you'll never want to stop. It gives you a buzz seeing the weight fall off, your bits tone up, and be in that environment.

Don't be disheartened.this was your cheat day :)

JMSA · 30/12/2024 13:47

OP, can we be friends? Grin

I actually prefer exercising outside. It was just so cooooollllllddddd today. The fact that I had left it late to go and was probably needing to eat probably didn't help with the whole cold thing.

It's all the P's isn't it? Perfect Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.
😂

AwakeNotThruChoice · 30/12/2024 13:58

I’m not sure I’d see Pizza and crisps as a meal to warm you up !

Mrsbloggz · 30/12/2024 14:01

My gym has reduced its opening hours during the Christmas period, I normally go every day but I haven't been for a week because I can't get myself together to get up in time🤦🏻‍♀️
I've been consoling myself with a six mile fast walk every day (can't run too much because of my sciatica these days, and anyway running makes your quad smaller 😜) followed by half an hour of yoga when I get home.

I'm excellent at the planning. Olympic level. Its the actual execution that I fall down on 😆

I don't think I'm one of life's winners either. But with exercise I have a 5 minute rule. If it's exercise time and I don't feel like it, because of tiredness or weather, I make myself go for 5 minutes. It doesn't seem like much so I do actually start - it's way less intimidating than contemplating a 45 minute run! And then 9 times out of 10 I end up doing a lot more because 5 minutes is enough time to warm up and start getting into it, and I think oh this isn't too bad. Occasionally after 5 minutes I am still miserable so I stop and go home, but hilariously I still feel pleased with myself for trying! 🤣

Would a 5 minute rule help for you?

I'm going to try that.

Right. I am going to do 5 mins of my dance training right now and if that gets me into it I will do my strength training or running!

I get very cold, too, so understand where you're coming from. I dress a lot warmer than other runners: merino base layer, winter tights (not shorts or thin leggings), gloves (not too thick or your hands get too hot), neck warmer etc. And if it's raining, a jacket on top which isn't that common, either. Maybe you just need better equipment that suits your metabolism/temperature? Or, as others suggest, take up an indoor sport instead?
