Anyone else struck down with a horrible winter virus/flu thing?

There was a thread on this somewhere but I can't find it now. I've lost track of how many days I've been feeling shit, but it started before Christmas and no signs of improvement. Achy, weak, throbbing sinuses, fever over 38. I survived hosting a family Christmas on ibuprofen and coffee but I just want to feel better now!! Tell me how you're doing and we can moan and groan together... 🫂

People are too selfish to wear masks. I keep windows open wherever I am to help avoid getting sick. Ventilation is the most effective thing.

mimicas · 30/12/2024 08:37

Me too, I have to get the flu virus once a year. I don't even know what the reason is, every time it is a symptom of body aches and dizziness.

Yes had this before Xmas it swept through work.
Unfortunately people are still coughing and sneezing and making no effort to catch, bin or kill extraordinary really

Quite agree. It's like we learned nothing from Covid.

I had it the week before my Xmas party (the 10th to be exact), I only thought I was fully recovered on the 28th.

The first week I couldn't walk nor eat.

I had this this a couple of weeks before Christmas. Try sleeping sitting up or propped up with pillows - it does help. I found l was coughing badly when l lay down and an upright position calmed it down a bit. I still have the cough now, but it’s gradually resolving. I found the only thing that helped was paracetamol 500. I had what seemed like half the flu/cold meds aisle on my bedside table at one point - all useless. Keep warm, drink plenty, ventilate the house a bit, and rest. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you will try and prop myself up a bit more tonight .

I had some kind of virus back in October , shook it off and then came down with a cold on 18/12. Sinusitis followed by chest infection over Xmas , and now I have an asthma flare up. Steroids , two lots of antibiotics and not much improvement
no energy, coughing fits every time I move ( literally), no sleep, no voice.
Contacted GP again today
Thanks for starting this thread, I needed a good moan . Sorry to hear so many people are suffering .
Get well soon everyone!

ImpromptuGathering · 30/12/2024 09:14

I am rather peeved. Arrived at MIL's yesterday for a 2 day stay to find her sneezing constantly and popping paracetamol. I wish she'd cancelled. DS gets pericarditis after covid and now I will spend the next six weeks in a state of high alert anxiety.

Imposter1212 · 30/12/2024 09:20

I had a horrible flu like thing in the week before Christmas. Dreadful aches and shivers but no temperature. Finally felt better xmas eve.

Woke up on Saturday feeling dreadful again. Cold symptoms and it feels like my face is going to explode 🤯

Givemethesun · 30/12/2024 11:47

Yup!!! We are out the other side now but so fatigued. Our symptoms and feeling good / terrible comes in waves - anyone else experienced this?

Yes, I had a day I thought I was over it then today it's vertigo and nausea again and complete exhaustion. My eyes ache with tiredness.

ErniesGhostlyGoldTops · 01/01/2025 06:51

I caught a virus in October. It went straight to my chest and I was coughing up crap. I then got the full on flu and was in bed for four days and then the first virus was still there and it got worse and worse.

I couldn't breathe well so the GP put me on amoxycillin twice and I spent a night in A & E having tests. Now I am on Doxycycline. I have just finished the last of those and I feel utterly exhausted. The coughing for hours at a time! Antihistamine helped a fair bit.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 01/01/2025 07:08

Apparently the flu vax was not a good "fit" this year. So many people ill, even after having the vax!

LouiseTopaz · 01/01/2025 07:15

My 9 month old son has had it for over a month and two sickness bugs, he ended up having to go into hospital on boxing day after he deteriorated and couldn't stay awake. Antibiotics have cleared everything up apart from his cough that he can't shift.

Hogglehedge · 01/01/2025 07:41

Yes I'm day 14 here and only just feeling better. Apparently the bad one going round is influenza A according to someone who works at hospital here.
I started with a temp then tight chest and coughing almost straight away. Fever on and off. Nose like a tap. Awful joint pain and rib stabs and feeling bruised in ribs. Headache, and awful nausea. Came in waves some days I felt better then it hit me again. Still got the cough slightly now. Hugs to all

Motnight · 01/01/2025 07:50

A colleague of mine was hospitalised with influenza a last week.

DH and then DD were ill with a bad cold bug during Xmas. I seem to have caught a different bug, have felt awful for days, and now DH seems to be going down with it 🤔.

Motnight · 01/01/2025 07:51

ps hope people start feeling better soon.

popandchoc · 01/01/2025 07:52

I’m on day 6 . Slightly better night with less coughing fits and wasn’t sweating . Temperature a lot more normal this morning at 37.9 compared to 40 yesterday morning . I stopped aching as much yesterday though and now that’s back …

Lostinmusic22 · 30/12/2024 08:15

Under jo circumstances whatsoever will I ever ever go back to wearing a mask. I would rather be ill.

@Lostinmusic22 masks are about protecting other people, as much as you. If you’re ill with something contagious over the air you should wear a mask. The Japanese have done this for decades and they never seemed to have developed this whingey, selfish, conspiratorial culture around masks.

Ultio · 01/01/2025 07:57

Also to the OP - yes, this thing is bloody awful. It’s the vertigo that’s really taken me by surprise this time.

user1471538283 · 01/01/2025 08:04

I've had it since a couple weeks before Christmas. I was coming back to life with just an upset tummy and exhaustion. Then my teeth started to hurt. I now have a mouth abscess and I'm in pain from that, a constant headache and I feel dreadful. I don't know if it's all connected or not.

So many people have this thing. I think I picked it up in work.

halfpasteleven · 01/01/2025 08:06

For me, it's just my sinus. Nose like a tap, all blocked up and no matter how many times I blow it, it just won't clear! Have bought so many tissues!
It's so painful. I've had it since 20th Dec.
I've tried: fresh air, sea air, staying in and keeping warm, nasal spray, nurofen- lots of types, hot whiskey, nothing seems to be working.

And also now my period with hugely painful cramps has arrived to keep me feeling utterly miserable.

Feeling guilty that I can't do more with my DC but the dizziness is never far away either.
Thankfully they haven't got this though.

user1471538283 · 01/01/2025 08:07

@Givemethesun - Yes prior to this mouth abscess I was exactly like that. I'd think I was getting better then bam really unwell again. I wonder if it's the temperature making you feel like that?

fanaticalfairy · 01/01/2025 08:11

nfk · 30/12/2024 08:00

Covid, flu and noro are all the tree at really high rates. RSV also circulating pretty freely.

If you don’t want 4 illnesses this winter, wear a mask on public transport, in hospitals and think about air quality in indoors places.

And if you do come down with something, don’t go out and about spreading it (and if you absolutely have to go out, wear a mask to reduce the viral load you’re inflicting on people)

Because whichever one we had, it was miserable, and there isn’t much you can do other than treat symptoms and ride it out (and in my case, stay close to a loo)

Did you sleep through COVID or something?

Wearing masks doesn't prevent you getting ill. It helps prevent the spread of illness.

Try a nasal flush

halfpasteleven · 01/01/2025 08:14
