Is this mad? Where could we go? Me dd 15 and Dh. We live in North Hertfordshire, so needs to be easy to get to from there, driving. Or is everything just shut? Thinking perhaps Brighton?

Only ever been to the sea in summer!

Winter days at seaside- bliss.

Girasoli · 29/12/2024 14:14

Brighton seafront in January will be fine unless it's really windy.

We are planning to do a New Year's day walk (scooters for the DC) along the promenade, then depending on how cold we are we can get donuts/hot chocolate or fish and chips to eat on the beach (and gaurd from seagulls).

Brighton always has lots to do. This week is the quietest of the year (I've sat in empty restaurants many times during Christmas week in Brighton) but everywhere is open. The ice-skating at the Royal Pavilion is still going, and the pier is fully open. All of the shops are open. I was going to go into Brighton today, but I'm too tired!

@Daytripper25 because, as has already been pointed out, people live in these places. They don't just exist for your occasional convenience.

I live in a small seaside town and there’s fuck all open here. I don’t think it’s that unreasonable to wonder what’s open on a Sunday between Christmas and New Year in an unfamiliar town. My town was busy in the run up to Christmas but most places are now closed until Monday.

Just on my way back from Porthcawl: absolutely rammed! Had a glass of wine outside on the promenade and the sun even came out!

Penguinsn · 29/12/2024 14:49

We went to Horsey and lots of baby seals on the beach there.

Day trip to sea in January????
cheapskatemum · 29/12/2024 18:07

Definitely go to see the seals at Horsea, on the Norfolk coast.

Hskatkat · 29/12/2024 18:32

@Penguinsn that's a great photo
Last time I saw seal pups on a beach was New Zealand they were gorgeous..... But "Fragrant"'

Great Yarmouth if you want amusements. DH spent his childhood at Winterton not far away, sand dunes, seals. There are some snippy folk on here !

Daytripper25 · 29/12/2024 11:04

If I could get there in a day I would do it!

You can, easily. You're like an hour and a half from the coast.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 30/12/2024 10:33

We went yesterday to Redcar. Long walk on beach with dogs, then fish and chips and home. Was lovely, if bloody cold.

Brighton never shuts 🤣.it's a long way from you though. I don't live a million miles away from Brighton,I'm in a village,we take our dogs on the beach in winter, because they are long haired the bungalow is open plan, and the forests are too muddy. Apparently you are never further than 70 miles away from a beach in this country. If I was you, I would go further north, some great scenery, wild beaches. My gkds like a picnic even in winter. Go for it!

Closest beach to me is 108 miles, I think we are in the furthest possible place from the coast in the UK

whatsappdoc · 30/12/2024 10:39

Anyone mentioned Southwold? Not sure if the pier is open all year but lovely beach and harbour area.

mumonthehill · 30/12/2024 10:40

Live by the sea and it has been very busy. Ds surfed on Boxing Day and people were swimming yesterday. It was a lovely atmosphere and all ages.

PheasantPluckers · 30/12/2024 10:45

Not mad at all! Wrap up warmly and enjoy. I love an autumn and winter walk by the sea, really blows the cobwebs away!

Dulra · 30/12/2024 10:48

I live in Dublin close to the coast love my weekly coastal walks so good for the soul rain gail or shine

Can't be. It's well known that the furthest place in the UK from the coast is in Derbyshire, and is 70 miles from the coast

Nannyfannybanny · 04/01/2025 10:03

According to Google Coton Derbyshire is the furthest away from the sea at 70 miles.

Do you recommend any particular one? Am thinking nice beach for walk, fish and chips, warm coffee shop and amusements!

Ooh, you could try Littlehampton on the West Sussex coast, it has all of that. We live in Hertfordshire and go several times a year, quite often in February half term and most things are open. We love mini golf at Buccaneer Bay - you can get a great bacon roll at the cafe there or the fish and chips shop just across the road is really good. In the town itself is a wonderful art gallery/cafe that does “the best ever milkshakes” according to my DC.

The beach is pebbly when the tide is in, but when it goes out you get sand. Lovely place, we’ve made some lovely memories there.

mamaduckbone · 04/01/2025 10:19

Southwold in Suffolk is easy to get to from Hertfordshire and is beautiful at any time of year. Everything will be open I imagine.

Chypre · 04/01/2025 10:23

Just been to the beach with my dogs this morning, it’s very definitely “open” 😂 Not sure about ice cream parlor though.

I'm near Coventry, if you can find a beach less than 70 miles away I'd be glad to know it because I'd love a day trip!
