Is this mad? Where could we go? Me dd 15 and Dh. We live in North Hertfordshire, so needs to be easy to get to from there, driving. Or is everything just shut? Thinking perhaps Brighton?

Only ever been to the sea in summer!

Extraordinary ignorance to assume the coast is "shut" in winter

Lol...some people can take offence at anything. Why would fish and chips, amusements be open if there is no footfall? I mean in the smaller places.

Felixstowe?

madamtav · 29/12/2024 11:21

@Daytripper25 because, as has already been pointed out, people live in these places. They don't just exist for your occasional convenience.

Seeline · 29/12/2024 11:22

If you want amusements etc you're better off looking at the larger places - Southend, Clacton, great Yarmouth or Cromer. The beaches aren't as nice as eg Hunstanton, but you won't get amusements there.
Somewhere like Aldburgh might give you a bit more of a mix or beach, pub, cafe etc but I don't think they have amusements.

wizzbitt · 29/12/2024 11:23

Another fan of a moody, winter beach. I live in Brighton and we get lovely hot doughnuts from the cafe after a beach walk. Places will definitely be open although it won't be mad busy. We're currently in Scotland and we always plan to go to Anstruther where they do the BEST fish and chips but it's not always guaranteed to be open this time of year.
Hope you have fun whatever you decide.

TENSsion · 29/12/2024 11:23

You could fly from Luton to knock, Dublin or Belfast in 1.5 hours

Bodeganights · 29/12/2024 11:23

In the bigger seaside towns there will be places open even the amusements. I love hunmanby gap but the beach cafe is closed now til around March time. But it's a walk to Filey via the beach and theres stuff open there. Plus a decent chippy on the way home.
Try googling beaches near you and "cafe" and checking out their Facebook page.

I've deffo been the big seaside towns in January and February. Usually nicer because less crowded and dogs allowed on beach as out of season.

Crackers4cheese · 29/12/2024 11:25

we went to the beach on christmas day
dds went in the sea,
not fully but enough for a photo shoot Grin

Oh come on - we all know that some places shut, or reduce hours, in the office season. If OP isn't familiar with a location, it's reasonable to wonder if amenities will be open on a Sunday between Christmas and NY. There must be a limit to how many fish and chips suppers locals can eat during the winter season!

Hskatkat · 29/12/2024 11:32

I love going to the seaside in winter, as long as your are appropriately dressed as in the warm dry sense.
Go have fun

As a lot of coastal places rely on tourism I would say you are talking rubbish.

Why are you so bitter about it?

OP posts:
unsync · 29/12/2024 11:42

@Daytripper25 I don't really do amusements, but I suppose the ones with piers?

ODFOx · 29/12/2024 11:45

It may be slightly too far for a day (depending where in Herts you are) but Horsey Gap in early January is extraordinary.

SushiSheep · 29/12/2024 11:49

Walton-on-the-Naze or Frinton-on-Sea @Daytripper25 !

KenAdams · 29/12/2024 11:50

Lol at everyone that lives near the coast implying that nowhere shuts for the off season.

They do like to get uppity about anything tourists say about the coast though.

catsmother · 29/12/2024 11:50

Hi .... I also live in North Herts, would recommend Southwold which is about 2 hours drive. It has a fantastic and unusual pier (look at their website for details) which I think is open year round. Lovely beach for a walk ..... if you head out of town you'll shortly get to the ferry point where you can get a row boat across to a village called Walberswick. This has a pub IIRC. At the same spot, there used to be a fantastic fish restaurant but there's also quite a few places back in town.

ShortyShorts · 29/12/2024 11:51

I'm not sure what all the question marks are about in your thread title, but anyway.

If you're anywhere near Essex, Clacton pier is open every day of the week and Walton on the Naze pier is open at weekends and school holidays.

I live in a small seaside town in the NE of England, everything is open all year round. Chippys, arcades, ice cream shops etc. This coming couple of weeks will be quieter as lots of the small indies take time off post Christmas.

Crackers4cheese · 29/12/2024 13:46

one council near me has closed the loos in the winter
very unhelpful

Chewbecca · 29/12/2024 13:57

To be fair to OP, a fair bit of Southend seafront is open all year round but many of the cafes are closed and Adventure Island is not open until February half term.

I would happily take a blustery walk down Southend pier, put a few 2ps in a shove-y thing at an amusement arcade and have lunch at Oliver's on the Beach.
