Can I ask you what magazine subscriptions you're starting in 2025?

Just that really. Magazines feel a bit old fashioned. But I just spent a pleasant afternoon at the coffee shop flipping through some glossy magazines. Very nice. So, inspired, I came home and opened up a Homes and Gardens subscription. It'll make me unhappy as I have a major house/garden envy. But the beast needs to be fed....😳😂

Motorsport Magazine

RachelCarew · 28/12/2024 17:05

Have you got a library card? I read any magazines I want to on Pressreader, free with my local library.

UndeniablyGenXmasOfAWomblingMerryType · 28/12/2024 17:06

Not a new one, but we get Private Eye.

I’ll be renewing my subscription to Private Eye, The Idler and Fortean Times. Probably won’t be adding any new ones though.

macshoto · 28/12/2024 17:13

Weekly:

  • The Economist
  • Country Life

Fortnightly:

  • Private Eye

Quarterly:

  • World of Fine Wine
  • Noble Rot
  • The Road Rat
  • Maserati Owners Club
  • Shropshire Wildlife Trust

Mounts up when you list it out like that.

dynamiccactus · 28/12/2024 17:13

Also not a new one but I subscribe to Womens Running magazine and get a few others with membership organisations like Historic Scotland and my local wildlife trust.

WhitstablePearl · 28/12/2024 17:14

Bushcraft magazine

ShadowsOfTheDays · 28/12/2024 17:17

@macshoto I love The Road Rat but it's so expensive! Absolutely beautiful though, so worth it if you can afford it.

macshoto · 28/12/2024 17:25

@ShadowsOfTheDays I've been a Road Rat subscriber since issue one. It is pricey, but if you look at it as a quarterly book purchase (£25/quarter or whatever it works out to, isn't too bad)... However, the admittedly very nice, Road Rat slip cases (@£55 for each four issues) does feel a bit spendy.

whiteroseredrose · 28/12/2024 17:27

I am renewing National Geographic Travel Magazine and have just subscribed to Vegan Living.

May add Which? Travel too.

Mmm that's a lot to read 😅. Do you get good wine deals from the world of fine wines?

Well that's true. Damn you're gonna cost me money 😁

We used to get it at work so I never needed to pay for it, and I miss it.

The English Garden

WhitstablePearl · 28/12/2024 17:41

@Huffalumps It's a sort of sustainable living/survivalist style magazine , but low key.

Much more on the "these plants are edible & here are some recipes" and how to make things out of natural materials.

Much more "sustainable living" and nature than survivalist - and being UK based, no guns etc!

Oh right. I was imagining how to snare a rabbit or skin a deer 😂

The English Garden

Is the English garden better than Gardeners world?

OP posts:

Monocle magazine and The Atlantic

DaphneLaurel · 28/12/2024 17:58

New Humanist but think I'm gonna cancel it as last couple of issues haven't been great. Weighing up my options.

StopStartStop · 28/12/2024 17:59

None. Not even going to buy them on a casual basis. I've wasted so much on magazines on the past ten years. Putting a stop to that.

Mirenamirena · 28/12/2024 18:11

We have a Readly subscription that has all sorts of magazines. DP uses it for motorsports and I like all the gardening and house magazines but frequently dip into others.

mamabluestar · 28/12/2024 18:19

I have a subscription to Readly, which gives me access to hundreds of magazines and newspapers. Although the page flipping is virtual

cortex10 · 28/12/2024 18:21

The English Garden comprises several fairly detailed articles each month about impressive gardens that are generally available to visit for inspiration whereas Gardeners World has more varied and practical how to do it content.

Can I ask what sort of device you access this on? I have a mobile and laptop but I find reading online really unsatisfactory, not the same as flipping through a newspaper or magazine while having screen breaks.

macshoto · 28/12/2024 23:44

@Huffalumps "Mmm that's a lot to read 😅. Do you get good wine deals from the world of fine wines?"

Not really, though the tasting notes are really good. It does a good job of articles on wines to buy en primeur and also tastings after a few years of bottle age.

It's more of an in depth wine quarterly. Lots of good wine writing, and more depth than in most other places. Good coverage of the wine auction market as well.

I'm thinking about doing my WSET Level 4 Diploma at some point and I think this is good background reading.
