Worst airport you have been in

Travelling through BHX this evening. Looks like a building site, no staff to be seen at check in, then a poor guy turns up apologising for lack of staff. Security an absolute mess, lots of staff having a lovely chat whilst the queue moves at a snails pace, nobody taking control. Awful. It’s got to be up with the worst experience I’ve had. Luckily our flight is delayed due to fog, else we wouldn’t have made it. What’s your worst experience in an airport?

Beauvais. No where to sit other than the floor.

Luton is a horrible airport. Birmingham is our local and we’ve always found it bloody brilliant! Nice to get off a flight and be at home in bed in half an hour, too.

Worst was probably Dalaman but it’s been some years since I went so it may have improved.

Nicest was Bahrain. It had white carpets and a posh car show room in the terminal.

We flew to Dalaman last year and thought it was excellent. Very efficient and clean.

Only downside is that it houses the most expensive McDonalds in the world.

B’ham security is notoriously shite. I pay to fast track, the queues can be awful!

MerryMaker · 27/12/2024 20:44

Miami. Disorganised and took hours to get through security for our transfer. I thought we were going to miss our connection.

I think a lot of the Greek island airports are like that. I was going to say Santorini before they rebuilt it. It's lovely now although I miss the airside smoking terrace.

This is good to know as Santorini is one of my favourite places but I’ve avoided going back purely due to the airport!!

Heraklion

I found Heraklion not great too. We had delays both times we've been there, and found the staff very rude to brits. I'm by no means tarring all the staff, but us and a few other families experienced the same, both times we've been there. Well all 4 times really with two separate holidays.

Malè airport in the Maldives. Service was absolutely fine but it's very veryyyyy run down. And tiny. As in the terminal is like a school hall. So diddy and a rickety runway. It's got bad poverty compared to the gorgeous privately owned islands.

Having said that to balance it out, I had such wonderful service at Majorca airport, Poland, and JFK. JFK is stressful due to border control but everyone was very pleasant.

HotCrossBunplease · 27/12/2024 20:45

I flew in and out of Heraklion in May this year. It seemed absolutely fine, fairly similar to most resort airports I’ve been to eg Tenerife, Mallorca. Wonder if it’s had a facelift since many here were there?

VegTrug · 27/12/2024 20:45

Atlanta!!!!!! Second being Heathrow of course.
The absolute BEST being Vancouver Airport without a doubt

Violinist64 · 27/12/2024 20:45

Stanstead. Not very clean, very large and hardly anywhere to sit down.

SilviaDaisyPouncer · 27/12/2024 20:45

JFK. The staff I encountered were incredibly rude and made sexually inappropriate comments to me. Plus it was an absolute yellowing dump.

Luton.

2 people on the desks at boarder control, flight was a chartered family resort flight that had been delayed by 4 hours. Everyone on the flight had children and children can't use the E-gates. It took bloody ages to get through!

You can use them over 12 in the UK as long as accompanied by an adult, so handy if your children are slightly older.

? There is no airport in Chamonix.

Aggh I meant Chambery! 🙈. Years since I’ve been as after the second year of awfulness we decided it’s better to fly to Geneva and have a longer transfer!

BigSleepySnail · 27/12/2024 20:46

Nice (after passport check) and mykonis departures. Hot, tiny, hardly any refreshments

Bergamo without a doubt. Disorganised, chaotic and hot as hell even in November!

We flew from Bergamo just a few weeks ago and it was lovely - well, as lovely as airports get anyway.

Rhodes was awful, especially the toilets. The absolute state of them.

Cancun was the most stressful; multiple announcements at the same time from different speakers. Sensory nightmare! (This was at the arse-end of Covid though; it wasn’t as bad the year after.)

Belfast international- it's a dirty dump. It's a joke to call it an "international " airport

TheFairyCaravan · 27/12/2024 20:48

I hate Birmingham airport with a passion. Whenever we fly from there there’s a problem.

I don’t mind Kos Airport, tbh. I loved Boa Vista Airport on Cape Verde, although it was open air so I did wonder what would happen when it rained.
