Worst airport you have been in

Travelling through BHX this evening. Looks like a building site, no staff to be seen at check in, then a poor guy turns up apologising for lack of staff. Security an absolute mess, lots of staff having a lovely chat whilst the queue moves at a snails pace, nobody taking control. Awful. It’s got to be up with the worst experience I’ve had. Luckily our flight is delayed due to fog, else we wouldn’t have made it. What’s your worst experience in an airport?

Orlando. Horrible shouty staff and just a shitty place.

Came here to say I've been 'in' a few airports that are nothing but a shed and a runway, no facilities at all except maybe a bench. Distinctly uncomfortable and also quite charming!

The one I hated most was Houston. Massive, regimented, unfriendly, with loudspeakers issuing orders and warnings every few minutes. Felt like a product being processed in a factory with angry employees.

I think it was at Houston airport that I had to queue up to do a catwalk with my luggage whilst being sniffed by dogs. Yeah, felt like a criminal.

orly in Paris- no air con and scary looking guys with guns, tiny tiny airport with nowhere to wait (were there eight hours). Will always go Charles de galle in the future

TwistedWonder · 27/12/2024 21:10

Marrakesh- nearly 3 hours to get through passport control

From the plane landing to the hotel was longer than the actual flight

SavingTheBestTillLast · 27/12/2024 21:11

Doha
If you’re travelling through you have to go landside.
You buy your duty frees and they take them off you as you go airside again as you’re not allowed to carry them through
What a con
You have now been warned MNetters!

Its also a huge boring space with the occasional enormous awful piece of sculpture to break up the monotony of nothingness. Then there’s the price of a coffee 🤯.

SerafinasGoose · 27/12/2024 21:12

JFK T7. Glad they are in the process of rebuilding it - it needs it. Next thing they need to replace is their obnoxious staff.

Miami Intl.

Heathrow AKA Deathrow.

RosesAndHellebores · 27/12/2024 21:13

Santorini c1986. LA c1979 was pretty gross too in a rather different way!

Overthemoun · 27/12/2024 21:13

Malaga - there isn’t enough staff for the non eu passports and it can take hours after security to get through, they don’t mention this at all! I’ve never seen so many running through the airport and missing flights.

Luton is busy but has handled it well, aside from the access road which hasn’t recovered since the fire.

Birmingham is a joke.

I like the little airports with nothing in to them - there’s less to go wrong.

Floralnomad · 27/12/2024 21:13

Rhodes , but I think they may have improved it a bit since .

blueshoes · 27/12/2024 21:13

Okinawa is my absolute favourite as it is both commercial and military so fast jets take off on the same runway. From the JAL lounge it is like an airshow with the backdrop of the pacific ocean

@CMOTDibbler Sounds incredible. Might be worth a visit with young nephews just for the airport.

Waggytail · 27/12/2024 21:14

Charles de Gaulle. Absolutely packed in like sardines on the train on the way to the airport causing fights between passengers, then a lot of very strange men loitering around in the terminals. People washing their feet in the sinks in the bathrooms etc. Was all just a bit grubby and unpleasant.

Spent the night in Seattle airport and there was nothing to do, nowhere to buy food, and barely a staff member in sight. I was a lone female traveller and a bit frightened so probably made it worse but was the longest night of my life waiting to check in for that flight!

rubyslippers · 27/12/2024 21:14

santorini - tiny
no seats and no shops

But I can forgive as the island itself is stunning

all American airports I’ve ever been to are horrible - Orlando is horrid with interminable queuing

I would have voted Hong Kong just because of the incredibly scary landing on a really short runway over the sea. However it’s not so bad now they’ve moved the airport to Lantau island ( except for the quite obvious destruction and ruination of Lantau Island ) .

Marco Polo (Venice)
Absolutely horrendous.
Four times I've been through it, every time it's been chaos, massive queues, no structure, complete free for all, staff are rude.

It was fantastic when we were there in March. Maybe time of year dependent

FKAT · 27/12/2024 21:15

Another vote for LAX. The 'first class lounge' there is like a low rent buffet at a Travelodge.

Tivat in Montenegro is a chaotic angry crowded bus station with a tiny airstrip that looks like it will send you straight into a mountainside.

Luton is one of my local ones and I will defend it with my life - the outside is a bit chaotic but the shopping and eating is lovely as is security. The one thing my kids notice is how great UK airports are compared to overseas. It's literally the one thing we do well.

Split is another favourite. Just straight out of a 60s jet set Gerry Anderson show.

Oh and Dubai. Can't stand the place but the airport is the bees knees. Gold toilets!

LivingColour · 27/12/2024 20:29

Went there a couple of years ago and they have not.

The only airport I’ve been where you check-in, then are asked to leave the airport and go to one of the bars/cafes/restaurants nearby as the area airside past security is too small to have people waiting.

This is the same in Kefalonia! Infact, I’ve never had a good experience in any Greek airport so I would say they’re all bad. Plus LAX for the sheer bedlam.

Tinseltuttifruitti · 27/12/2024 21:15

Brussels Zavetem, ugh. Also rejakvik, they don't even have seating.

swashbucklecheer · 27/12/2024 20:48

Belfast international- it's a dirty dump. It's a joke to call it an "international " airport

It’s an international airport because it flies internationally.

Sunnysal · 27/12/2024 21:16

I'm well travelled but Heathrow T3 takes the biscuit!

RisingSunn · 27/12/2024 21:16

MyOliveCritic · 27/12/2024 21:17

Naples. Total chaos.

Guernsey airport is tiny.
I think you’d love it, it’s like those airports you see on Piorot or old movies,

TwistedWonder · 27/12/2024 21:17

I went to Skiathos in 1988 and the airport was basically a hut with a tiny runway that people used as a road (walked and drove across) As a flight was coming in or taking off, there was a level crossing type gate

The runway was so short the planes seemed to take off almost vertically then land on the mainland after a few minutes to top on the fuel.

ObieJoyful · 27/12/2024 21:17

Porto Santo.

Plane cancelled, but nobody told us for four fucking hours.

Then they bussed us all to a hotel where we couldn’t eat until morning.
