I’m waiting for a flight connection back to UK. Been out of Brit culture two weeks and jolted that ‘fuck’ is a regular part of the conversation of fellow passengers. Note to self. Doesn’t sound good. Don’t fall back into the habit.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/12/2024 18:48

It happened to me once on a train late at night, young men, very intimidating

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/12/2024 18:51

Strangely enough, as a non swearer, I don’t mind it. DH is a big swearer and I don’t care. The UK and US are big swearers as a population it seems.

Nerdlings · 27/12/2024 18:52

why is it worse in an older man than a younger one?

MissyB1 · 27/12/2024 18:55

I don’t like hearing it in public places, especially when every sentence is peppered with it, I find it very aggressive and intimidating.

GuessingGownaGoGo · 27/12/2024 19:00

Depends how it's done. If it's just ' I dropped the fecking thing on my bleedin foot, stupid twat' . . . that's fine in my book.

But if they are calling people stupid cunts and thick slags that's OOO and just ignorant and offensive.

Tomorrowistheday · 27/12/2024 19:28

It' s not just " blokes" whose swearing is really intimidating and offensive.
My neighbour uses foul language at the top of her voice. Often directed at her children. It's extremely distressing.

Marblesbackagain · 27/12/2024 19:30

Don't ever come visit Ireland 🤣🤣🤣

ssd · 27/12/2024 19:33

I heard them discussing ages, one was 69 the other early 70s....i asked dh who is early 60s does he swear like a trouper when hes out with pals, he said no way, he was out for a Christmas do with pals the other week, they all caught a busy train home together and he said none of them swore.....

I just found these older mens language appalling, they got off at a nice station, all bought houses and fancy cars....

If it was young men or women swearing like that I'd have hated it all the same...

I'm from an Irish family. Swearing in the UK is totally different and can often be done deliberately aggressively to intimidate others whereas in Ireland it's every day speech

Manypaws · 27/12/2024 19:38

Is it Jack and Victor? I always thought their language was awful

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 27/12/2024 19:39

What's their age got to do with it? I hear plenty of effing and jeffing from young people, especially women.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 27/12/2024 19:40

A post about older people swearing........ and your first two words are deeply offensive to Christians. 🤔

LadyWiddiothethird · 27/12/2024 19:41

The Irish are the most foul mouthed nation on the planet. As a Trinity college Professor once said.

I am Irish and swear in the house, never outside it.

Em, I suggest you take a walk around Dublin city some day soon. It is very much aggressive and intimidating.

A few years ago I was out with Wilf for a meal and the man two tables away was f ing and blinding. Wilf was facing him and is an excellent lip reader. I got up to go to the bar to complain. The manager came over and hovered.. No bad language. Manager left. Language started again so I got up and went and asked the man to stop swearing. He told me he was having a good time. I replied that that was all well and good but if he could have a good time without peppering every sentence with the f word I would be able to have a good time too. His language improved..
Last year on a train I had a group of foul mouthed youngsters behind me after a very fraught journey. I asked them to pack it in. They ignored me!!
Upon complaining to the guard he told me I should move. I told him in no uncertain terms that they should be moved... He rather sensibly took my advice!!

ssd · 27/12/2024 21:50

Yes they were like Jack and Victor without the humour and with f-ing in every sentence

My Londoner exH got me into swearing. I do use the F-word a lot and 💩 a fair bit. 🍒 is a favourite. No c-bomb though. Trying to curb it...but sometimes no word is strong enough to describe my feelings. I don't use bad language around my child (now an adult) but her dad always has and it gives me the ick. I came up with alternatives like Bollards & Fudge around her.

There’s an Brummie/Irish guy at work and literally ever conversation he has its littered with the f word 🤣

ssd · 27/12/2024 22:25

I'm in Glasgow, there's plenty swearing here, "poor c**t" is a form of endearment, but there's a time and a place and a busy commuter train isn't the place, 2 old guys should know better

I had this on a train when my DD was 4. They could see I had a small child yet the group of 4 had a conversation that would have made Roy chubby brown blush!!!

They were using the c word too!
I glared at them a few times. I put it down to a lack of adjectives in their vocabulary!

visitbreakfast · 27/12/2024 22:31

Young people who swear turn into older people who swear.
