Getting a new TV set up in the New Year!
Wondering about Sky Glass, what’s the pros and cons also how much is it a month?

I also need a need a broadband package do I go with Sky for that too?

Do you have better set ups or suppliers?

thanks in advance

Not sure on cons or even research because I was drawn in by how pretty it is 😂

But I've had mine almost a year now and love it. Sure it's pricey, but I've never had a single issue. I love that you sign into all the apps and then can run searches for a movie/TV and it'll check all the apps. Interface is lovely, brings me a big smile any time I turn it on. Easy for DS (5) to use as well (he loves the little built in games).

Pedallleur · 27/12/2024 16:33

It's just a dumb terminal. Takes the Sky system and puts it on screen. If you don't have Sky I don't think you have a tv

Hoglet70 · 27/12/2024 19:46

The sound is very good.

soloula · 27/12/2024 19:48

We got it last year and returned it within days. Sound was great but picture was terrible, especially the colours. It was really heavy and unwieldy too. We ended up with a cheap TV instead and it's way better than the glass was.

Janedoe82 · 27/12/2024 19:50

I am really happy with it. Have internet with them too. £100 a month with a 60 inch, internet, Netflix and they this month just sent a free box thing so now have sky in other room too.
Only thing I don’t like is you can’t record.

Mespher · 27/12/2024 19:55

The Sky Forums are quite useful so I would probably look on there, I use them quite a bit, especially if there is a glitch. We don't have Sky Glass, we have Sky Q as DH likes to record things

Janedoe82 · 27/12/2024 20:47

What I liked about it was I literally ordered it over the phone- they phoned me and then also gave me £100 of Tesco vouchers. It arrived within a week and a nice man delivered it- can’t remember if he or husband set it all up but it was super easy. No faffing about wondering which TV to buy, getting it home, trying to work out how to use it. You literally turn on and all your SKY channels there, then can also click on the apps that are already there without downloading. I have I player, Netflix, Disney, Paramount and YouTube. Probably others too. Great if you are a technophobe who just wants something easy and no hassle.
We have fancier TVs in other rooms and I haven’t a clue how to work them!

Toddlerteaplease · 27/12/2024 22:20

I looked into sky glass as Sky gave me a really good deal. But even the smallest screen is far to bog for my house.

WingBingo · 27/12/2024 22:26

It’s all content driven, no live tv unless you use bbc iPlayer, or similar.

I loved it but MIL who lives with us likes to record everything couldn’t get her head around it, so we went back to Q, but kept the tv.

Q is good enough for now.

Janedoe82 · 27/12/2024 22:30

It does have live TV. And you can pause and rewind. Just can’t set to record like on ordinary sky.

ViaRia01 · 27/12/2024 22:34

Would someone mind explaining to me what is sky glass? I’ve asked sky, I’ve googled it, I’ve asked a man in curry’s and I just don’t understand…

I have a Samsung tv and sky stream with 2 pucks.

Oh ok, my mistake. We had it when it came out and I was sure that was the case!

It’s a TV made by sky with everything already built in so no need for a box etc. connects wirelessly to internet

Mespher · 28/12/2024 06:35

Is the quality of the streaming apps any good, I find Sky Q apps terrible and have to use Apple TV

Justsayit123 · 28/12/2024 06:40

There are far better tvs than that.

Mespher · 28/12/2024 06:47

Yes it probably depends on whether you would get a £400 TV from Amazon as an alternative or a top end TV.

Mespher · 28/12/2024 06:53

You don't have to have broadband with Sky to use it but you do need fairly fast broadband, it probably isn't ideal if your broadband is FTTC under about 40mbps

Capricornandproud · 28/12/2024 06:57

Absolutely brilliant - I love mine, no replacing the Sky box, no need for a satellite dish, beautiful picture and sound. I dont use Sky for my broadband. Choose your best deal for high speed broadband and you can order the sky glass TV totally separately.

LoafofSellotape · 28/12/2024 06:57

Pretty shit you can't record , I'd have to wait until that is up graded.

Teanbiscuits33 · 28/12/2024 07:17

It’s a con to me. It’s basically all your streaming apps in one place so Netflix, iPlayer, itv X, More 4 etc, but if you already have a smart tv and subscribe to the (mostly free) streaming apps, then you don’t need sky glass. They don’t provide anything very innovative or unique

They are basically charging you extra each month to have all your streaming services streamed from their tv. To use sky glass, you need a specific tv which costs hundreds of pounds extra even if there was nothing wrong with your original tv, so that’s another way they profit. They aren’t providing any extra streaming services and they are forcing you into buying their tv and charging you more for the privilege. The tv isn’t anything special whatsoever either.

Added to that, the picture is crap compared to a standard tv and if you lose your internet signal your whole viewing experience is interrupted.

Needless to say, we went back to sky Q where we can record things and keep better track of what we have watched and what we haven’t, with a better picture.

You don’t need to, as content is available on demand

Teanbiscuits33 · 28/12/2024 18:46

WingBingo · 28/12/2024 18:36

You don’t need to, as content is available on demand

But shows aren’t always on exactly when you want to watch them as they sometimes take some time to show up on catch up apps to stream. Plus, they don’t always show up in order of when they were first aired so it’s harder to keep track of what you have already watched and what you haven’t.

It’s just a money making scheme from sky trying to tap into the smart tv and streaming market by reinventing the wheel. Less outlay for sky themselves as they don’t need to install a dish, the customer pays them for a tv to use the product, plus pays more a month to stream mostly free apps on the tv. They can also reach a wider customer base as some homes aren’t allowed to have a sky dish installed so streaming works out more profitable.

WingBingo · 28/12/2024 18:36

We have found that if we download content it stays on the planner long after it's been deleted so probably more useful than things that are on demand until they are not. I have downloaded a whole series before as I have seen it is going to expire and kept in on there. No hard drive is the bad thing about stream and glass.

Patienceinshortsupply · 28/12/2024 18:55

DD got one last year, but we're both rural in the same village and have a dreadful dropout rate on the broadband so they find theirs is quite frustrating at times. Hence I've stuck to Sky Q - and we have mini boxes in all the upstairs bedrooms which won't run off Sky Glass which was probably the major factor in not upgrading to it.

foyc · 28/12/2024 19:00

The biggest problem with it is that it doesn't record and not everything is available to stream, I've been caught out a few times adding something to my list (that wasn't on one of the main channels) and it wasn't available to stream, it just disappears when the show has aired. But tbh unless you like a lot of non mainstream stuff it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

The other issue I have is that if I try to watch something live but a bit behind it can often glitch, throw me off and I can't pick it up again until it's available on catch up which isn't always quickly after.

Channel 4 and BBC have an irritating habit of shows sometimes defaulting to the sign language version with no alternative.

So definitely not perfect, but I like it on the whole and wouldn't go back to Q.
