I think I’m getting into building LEGO 😮

I bought an expensive (somewhere over £100) Lego Campervan set several years ago. I thought is was such an attractive thing, but never made it. Got it out over Christmas and have been building it together with my husband. It’s so satisfying 🙂 When we have finished, husband will fit it with lights, so we can use it as a lamp 😀

I had a look on the Lego website and it appears I have very expensive taste. The Orient Express is gorgeous, but £260! The Titanic is amazing and who couldn’t want it, but we couldn't justify £590 on a Lego set unless we had a large Premium Bond win.

Thankfully, I do quite like some of the botanicals and they now look really cheap! I’d love to hear from other Lego enthusiasts. . . . . . .

@JamesWebbSpaceTelescope good idea to look for cheaper versions. Unfortunately not personally keen on the blue colour of the flowers though.

@JT69 Ahh, that's cool. It can be a memorial to Jess! I've actually never had a tuxedo. My last two were all black. X

Highly recommend watching Lego Masters Australia as well if you're a fan of lego. The builds are amazing and it's very light hearted and positive (on All4 or whatever they're calling it now)

They did really well with the botanicals range because they appeal to so many people who like plants and flowers and home decor.

I've just got my first set of Lego, it's the Harry Potter castle! DH bought it for me for Christmas from eBay as it doesn't appear to be available new. Just started building it yesterday

My husband hired me the Titanic set a few years ago. So I had the enjoyment of building it but not the extortionate cost or the huge space needed to display it.

I have never heard of hiring Lego!

Welcome to the world of Lego.
Remember you don't have to spend £100s.
The Creator 3 in 1 sets that start from around £10 are just as good as the big £100+ sets.
New releases will be out in a few days on January 1st.
I also like City sets. There's a new much smaller Camper Van set that's on my want list.

I know what you’re saying, but they are not as ‘displayable’. I suppose I could resell after making them.

Needmorelego · 27/12/2024 23:26

@StrikeForever I prefer to build, take apart and build something else rather than displaying (although I do have lots on display).
I like City/Friends etc because I like to build a fun world and create scenes so that tends to be what's on display (at the moment it's a Christmas street scene).

I had a look based on your recommendation and these two definitely look worth a try. The shuttle for my husband and the Vespa for me 🙂

I love Lego, 36yr old woman so not it’s target market!

I take my kids to Billund in Denmark 2-4 times a year, legoland there is great but Lego house is even better. I have every exclusive set they’ve ever sold from there and the 3 football stadiums, large space shuttle, Saturn v rocket, iss, world map and Milky Way plus some of the pictures, oh and the globe lol. There are others too, all on display in my Lego room. Not forgetting of course the Concorde which is my favourite build ever (I’m cabin crew but sadly never experienced Concorde)

@RenegadeKeeblerElf these are the ones I want. The plant ones.
There's some cacti, and a bonsai tree I'm keen on.
But I'm getting the full size orchid first. Have you got that one? They are so cute, and I'm a keen gardener with several orchids so it kind of justifies itself. I think? 🤣

I got the orchid for Christmas, with a little light set as well! I haven’t built it yet as I need to wait until I get home (easier to transport!)
would love to see pictures of other people’s if they’ve already built theirs

I bought the orchid the other day, and it arrived yesterday. Built it soon after. It is indeed lovely! I have seen the lights advertised, but plan to see if it is something I can conjure up at home instead of buying them.

I’ll try to remember to take a photo tomorrow ☺️.

HeartandSeoul · 06/01/2025 02:25

As per previous comment of mine, I treated myself to my first proper set this weekend (the orchid). I can see it easily becoming a new hobby/addiction of mine!

However, I seem to have an aversion to touching small bits of plastic (first noticed it when using Hama beads several years ago). It makes me squirm 🥴!! I thought I would be ok with the Lego, but there were too many small pieces. Now I’m wondering if this will stop my hobby before it’s even properly started 🫤.

Ponderingwindow · 06/01/2025 02:26

I just refer to it as “the Lego tax” at this point.

Someone at that company knows exactly what sets to put out to make me have no choice but to buy them. I swore there would be no Lego on my Christmas list this year, then they announced the Botanical Garden.

It might save your bank account 😮

We have caught the Lego bug in our house too. My 5 year old son is autistic and really into landmarks (Eiffel tower, Big Ben, statute of liberty etc), so we bought him the Statue of Liberty LEGO for Xmas.

He was so excited and watched me build it over the course of Xmas day. Was so lovely to see him so invested in an activity together and I equally loved just being able to put my feet up and be waited on whilst I was on LEGO build duty!

DH has suggested we make it a Xmas tradition to buy a really complicated set and then build it over the Xmas break. He’s really pushing for the Lord of the rings Rivandale set for next year

The Lego ideas site allows you to vote on possible new designs. Once they get over 10,000 votes Lego officially consider the idea for production.

I love these jellyfish so please vote for them as I would love to build them at some point. https://ideas.lego.com/projects/ee097824-bd3e-4d20-a6de-9a3e6e2dcc17

Jellyfishes are both some of the strangest and most beautiful creatures of the ocean. But if you do not live near the ocean, it can be hard to find ...

@CaptinKitty I'm currently building the Rivendell set it is lovely.

hattie43 · 07/01/2025 20:00

What can I say. It's addictive . I was introduced after someone bought me the daffodils at Easter about 2 years ago . I must have sent about £2k on Lego by now .

I had a look at Brick Borrow, as mentioned by a couple of PPs. Has anyone here ever tried it?
https://www.brickborrow.com/

I tried them but didn’t really get on with it. The sets aren’t new (obviously) so the pieces are all jumbled together rather than being in bags, and I got bored trying to sort through about 1000 pieces to find what I needed.

MiniFig · 07/01/2025 20:08

the Chrysanthemum, the Plum Blossom and the new Orchid is a lovely set, and the little pots they stand in have really interesting building techniques.

The Bonsai tree has 101 little pink frogs (if you build the cherry blossom version)

a lot of the new botanicals are lovely too

My favourite set, and most fun to build was the lighthouse.

Was it this site?

What an amazing looking subscription! Wow, I don't currently do any lego because I can't justify the cost or the space. But this is pretty tempting.

I signed up for this and only hired 1 set. Obviously it's been used before so all the bits are together rather than in numbered bags. You have to take it all apart again at the end which left me frustrated and with no nails. The worst bit was picking people's hairs out of the pile of blocks 🤮 the idea is good thougj

I have never heard of hiring Lego!

the Builders Brew Café (between the Cathedral and Lloyds bank) in Sheffield is great - you have to book a table (to be sure of getting one) they have a lip round the edge so you don't lose pieces. You pay (I think) 3 pounds an hour, and reserve a set to build while you're there.

They reckon an adult can build 300 pieces an hour (I think)
