Have your pets managed to steal any food this Christmas?

Our dogs and cats years ago didn't usually get the opportunity but one year, one of our cocker spaniels snaffled a box of liqueur chocolates from under the Christmas tree and she scoffed the lot. I expect she suffered but lived to tell the tale (15 years old when she died). Chocolates weren't that attractive to her afterwards!

We have a Bengal. A few years ago he opened the fridge and ate lots of turkey on the night of Christmas. He also flicked out what he couldn’t eat to the dogs who love him.

Fast forward to now and we have a fridge lock (and freezer lock) but our son forgot to click it on and he got into the fridge and ate lots of the ham but flicked out frozen (defrosting) pigs in blankets to our dog.

I do love him and part of me finds him so clever. I can’t help but admire his antics. I wasn’t saying this when our dog had toilet issues though.

PS he can open doors including Suffolk latches and handles but we’ve moved to an old cottage with round handles so he’s flummoxed.

We don't have any pets but a mice got in yesterday and ate its way into my bathroom. Does this count?

Eeek! A little mouse and I scared each other witless when we came upon each other in the kitchen last year! My fault for leaving ingredients sitting out. Make sure you keep all foodstuffs locked in tupperware/tins and wash up straight after eating or you could end up with an infestation. I do hope your repairs aren't too expensive!

So far ddog 1 has stolen a caramel quality street. I'm surprised we haven't had more thefts. Both dogs are food oriented completely.

(Back in November mam was in hospital, I was sat at the table about to eat my Indian takeaway when ddog 2 got upset at fireworks- rescue dog. I turned for 2 seconds to comfort him and ddog 1 jumped up and stole the entire naan bread off the table. I had to leg it after her)

@SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter

It seems his point of entry is behind our electric meter which I'm not too thrilled about. Then into the bathroom through little holes where the pipes are.

I had a full on meltdown yesterday as I have one and one only fear - rodents.

Did I pass out on Boxing Day? This is up for discussion.

Found mouse droppings in my bathroom and didn't realise until after I'd hoovered the whole damn room, then found out I've put myself at risk for spreading the disease into the air.

This was all on top of a shit Xmas with dd and DH being ill with chest infections.

At this rate it won't cost me anything because I do intent to just burn the house instead.

Joking

Put wire wool into the holes, the mice won't chew that.

Ddog managed to eat the top quarter of a choux ring dessert. The worst bit of this was that she was already on her lead and being held by my sister due to being untrustworthy…Dd and myself ended up eating the leftovers whereas the other guests preferred the Christmas pudding!

The cat was confined to the utility room once the turkey came out, otherwise he would have launched stealth attacks on it the moment it was left undefended. Last year he stole a wing from the chopping board and darted under the sofa to try and eat it- we had to drag him out and remove it because of the bones and he growled like a demon.

This year he got his own (massive) bowl of turkey as we cleared the plates, which didn’t stop him from crying for food at his usual supper time.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/12/2024 08:32

We don’t have any pets any more, but I still remember a Christmas some years ago when friends with 3 dogs were staying - with ours that made 4.
On about the 28th I was in the kitchen, stripping the turkey, when I turned round to find all 4 of them sitting in a row, looking the picture of good manners and hope! 😂
They did all get a nice turkey-bits dinner later.
🐶🐶🐶🐶 - all RIP now, 😰

When I was a teen one of our cats chewed a big hole in the top of the Christmas cake while it was out on the board ready for topping. My mum just cut around the chewed bit then did the almond paste and icing as normal, nobody was any the wiser and everyone lived to tell the tale.

ThePure · 27/12/2024 09:37

We have the in laws including my niece and nephew aged 4 & 6 this Christmas. They live with dogs usually so they are unphased by our large shaggy rescue mutt but I have been quite stressed with managing putting away all the stuff they leave around that he might chew or eat.

I thought I had mostly been successful until I made all the kids a lovely hot chocolate with all the whipped cream and marshmallows post our Boxing Day walk and dniece came back in crying 10 mins later to tell me that she left it on a table to cool down and the dog ate it! He drank the whole thing right out of the cup. He followed her in a few seconds later with chocolate and cream all over his face looking very happy.

Obviously I did make her another one whilst he hung around hopefully waiting for a second one Grin

Our cockapoo ate 10 shortbread biscuits that were on a plate wrapped in clingfilm. Came into the living room to find him finishing them off and licking the plate clean. These were on the coffee table(our own fault I know) clingfilm was placed nicely to the side of the plate. No ill effects just a extra poo last night🤣

On Christmas Eve I caught our cat licking bacon fat off the grill pan after we’d had bacon sandwiches. That went straight in the dishwasher. Yesterday he hopped up on the side while DP was plating up the turkey, but was thwarted. He did get his own turkey later.

Bacon fat is specifically for the dog here 😂

Our Labrador filched two wrapped chocolates off the upright piano keyboard cover. This is despite me telling my daughter not to leave them there and moving them to the top 3 times.

No sign of the wrappers.... A few years ago, she stole an entire bag of Kinder chocolates - I realised what had happened two days later, she'd puked them up on the rug, still wrapped, barely chewed!

It is nice to know there were once a few trustworthy animals around. Unlike most of the thieving *** on here!

Oh indeed. She constantly scavenges outside, it's almost impossible to stop her. She does drive by blags, too - she once stole my dad's sausage roll of the kitchen table as she passed, too quick to stop her.

I caught her and made her drop the damn thing and she ignored me all day!

Sgtmajormummy · 27/12/2024 11:39

Previous dog once swiped a package of Cumberland sausages, squeezed into the neighbour’s garden and ate them all. She spent the next 2 days in bed, farting “digesting”.
This year I made gammon and DDog went wild for it, almost knocking me over and putting his head on everybody’s knee with a pleading expression. He’s had plenty and the bone will go his way.
The kitchen table is just a bit too high for him but I once found him trying to snaffle a roast chicken leg hanging off the side…

CoastalCalm · 27/12/2024 11:40

Our twatterdale stole and guarded a chocolate orange from bedtime Christmas Eve til Mid morning Christmas Day when he finally was distracted by a piece of cheese - this includes carrying it out for several toilet breaks

NearlyNewHip · 27/12/2024 11:44

My boy cat has ended up with the leftover pork joint..... my fault, didn't put it away properly. Let him keep it, he's been chewing on it on and off since Christmas day evening. Still wants his normal meals though .....

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/12/2024 12:23

My DD bought my DM a box of Tunnocks Tea Cakes as part of her Christmas present. The dog tore open the box but made a lot of noise so DH caught him with only half a teacake eaten. We are going to go through the box and serve the completely untouched ones to DS's friends, they're not fussy.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 27/12/2024 13:15

Not this Christmas, but my Sisters Cat snaffled half the baileys cheesecake I made for our Christmas Day pudding. Apparently she had her head inside the whole thing merrily chomping away. Not only did she snaffle that she also went round sneaking the remnants of everyone's Buck's Fizz and mulled wine and spent the rest of xmas day sleeping it off. She was fine Btw!!

Nonamenoplacetogo · 27/12/2024 13:29

My not so dear cat snacked on the artificial Christmas tree.. £300 vet bill later, she lived to tell the tale
