Does anyone else feel very sorry for Kevin.

It's boxing day so we're chilling out with a film and the film of choice is Home alone. Other than spending a significant portion of the film wondering what the other kids in the family might be called I've spent the rest feeling supremely sorry for poor Kevin.

DH thinks it's a fun uplifting film and that it's partly Kevin's fault whilst all I can think is the lad deserves a family that cares about him.

His uncles a jerk (for calling him a jerk).
His mum is a crap parent for sending her child to bed without dinner and I'm not 100% convinced she didn't leave him on purpose.

That's not to mention the fact they did it all again a year later...

We watched HA2 yesterday and I was ranting at how his stupid mother backed Buzz up over an incident that was clearly all his fault, and then believed his shit apology. Poor Kevin.

wastingtimeonhere · 26/12/2024 17:04

I think Kevin needs a stately homes link...

Pixilicious1 · 26/12/2024 17:04

i watched it for the first time on Christmas Eve and I totally agree. My 12yo DD also said they’re all horrible Kevin.

Look what you did you little jerk.

Berga · 26/12/2024 17:05

It was made in 1990, aside from the leaving him behind, the rest was pretty standard parenting.

Indeed! Poor kid would fill a thread or two.

(Starts at 1:20) always makes me laugh “Kevin” rejecting his moms call and the explanation as to why

I think the mother saying ‘maybe you’ll get your wish’ is every one of us that says the absolute wrong thing at the wrong time with their kids but don’t get that that night the following morning she wasn’t going back in saying ‘we’re going on a trip, we can’t be mad at each other’. I’m home alone 2 I thought it was worse, buzz should’ve gotten into more trouble

Namechangedforthis25 · 26/12/2024 17:15

I don't think it was standard parenting in the 90s although if anyone spoke to my kid the way his uncle did I'm not so sure I'd be ok with them staying in my house.

I'm also trying and failing to work out how many of the kids are actually his siblings.

This was a normal punishment though decades ago.

Upstartled · 26/12/2024 17:17

I wouldn't let you sleep in my room if you were growing on my ass.

user1484056932 · 26/12/2024 17:20

Kevin also has camera crew with him so isn't alone at any point.

Mymanyellow · 26/12/2024 17:20

There is no way they would have ever left him behind. No way. Nobody spoke to him after he was sent to bed in the attic? His mum didn’t go and check on an eight year old boy in the attic?
Nobody spoke to him all morning?
Once you’re over that it’s a good film but half of it is nonsense. I mean so is the other half really. But there you go !😀

HereComesDecember · 26/12/2024 17:24

I read somewhere that it’s all from Kevin’s POV, and therefore how awful they are to him is an exaggerated view.

I do get fed up of always seeing the mum being blamed though, he has a dad too! Frank is awful but I could well imagine a “it’s just how he is” conversation about him. He doesn’t seem awful to his own kids.

And he has 4 siblings - Buzz, Megan, Linnie and Jeff (yes I have seen this film far too many times!)

It was - I was ten in 1990, I didn't just make it up!

See I thought 4 but I'm sure he listed 6 when talking to Santa?

Buzz, Kate Megan, Linnie, Peter and Jeff.

His dad is also obviously to blame but I think mum gets more criticism because she's the one who has the conversation with him and takes him to the loft and outright tells him not to come out until morning.

Isn't this the whole point of the film? That they're all horrible to him to the extent that they forget to take him with them, then the parents feel terribly guilty and see the error of their ways. And it was a kids' movie from 30+ years ago, so back then you weren't supposed to think too deeply about it and just enjoy it as a film rather than mull over their parenting style.
