I bloody miss dvds at Christmas.

Watching Gavin and Stacey last night reminded me of getting the series 1&2 boxset for Christmas years ago and how brilliant all the dvd extras were, cast commentary on each episode, outtakes, behind the scenes making of ect. I kinda miss that these days with streaming, easier though it is you don't get all the extras. The cast commentary on the Love Actually dvd is better than the actual film!

Also all the comedians used to bring their stand up dvds out at Christmas and then on Boxing day they'd all be half price.

I'm only going back about 14 years ago or so but it feels like a different century!

I miss them and CDs so much.
The whole removing the wrapping who's is getting played first.

They were also great token gifts for people.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 26/12/2024 13:28

We still use our dvd player regularly.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 26/12/2024 13:28

You can still get them. We still use ours.

8moredays · 26/12/2024 13:30

Getting friends dvds were the best when I was a teenager. Easy for the grandparents to buy. Then I would lock myself in my room for the rest of Christmas watching them over and over 😂

UndeniablyGenXmasOfAWomblingMerryType · 26/12/2024 13:38

No need to miss them - get yourself a DVD player - so many secondhand DVDs available cheap!

Growlybear83 · 26/12/2024 13:39

I still use my DVD player regularly, and I also watch VHS videos from time to time.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/12/2024 13:41

We have a DVD player and a good collection of DVDs. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I know but I'm not talking about second hand ones. I wish they were still about now like they were in the mid 2000s.

Out of interest I just looked up the G&S finale dvd and the only extra included is the documentary that will be showing on new year's day and available on iPlayer anyway . I'd have brought it if it included a commentary, outtakes and whatnot.

Good for you. Me too. But I'd like them to still be being made and released with all the extras like they used to be.

I only ever watched deleted scenes sometimes. Never understood how anyone could be bothered with cast commentary etc.

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 26/12/2024 13:45

Absolutely a box set of DVDs and a new album on CD used to be standard presents for teens - no point now the download or stream everything.
My two do like their vinyl, but it is extortionately priced.

Tomorrowistheday · 26/12/2024 13:45

I still use my DVd player and use it fairly regularly - my favourite all time films are part of my collection and I love to rewatch them .
I've also still got some old videos but I think when the video player finally conks out I'll not be able to watch them as I'll not be able to replace it.

TheDandyLion · 26/12/2024 13:45

There's a making of program on iPlayer of the behind the scenes for the Gavin & Stacey Finale.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 26/12/2024 13:45

@TotallyTwisted I guess it takes all sorts 😂

Also men of all generations.
Totally pointless now everyone is streaming music and tv on demand.

I think that's partly why I miss them.

WhatNoRaisins · 26/12/2024 14:26

Agree, it was an actual useful gift you could give someone. There aren't many of those so it's a shame to lose that.

ExquisiteDecorations · 26/12/2024 14:30

I never used to watch any of the extras, navigating all the menus was complicated and I CBA. Out-takes and stuff are on youtube now. But I do miss being able to buy DVDs and CDs as Christmas presents, it made life a lot easier.

UnstableEquilibrium · 26/12/2024 14:31

A cast and crew commentary on a DVD for a favourite film was always the perfect thing to have on in the background while I cleaned the kitchen / did the ironing / sewed on some buttons. Makes it sound like a beloved institution generations old, but of course it was only a thing for, what? ten? fifteen? years. Nowadays of course a podcast serves the same function.

DVDs are still quite a good present for octogenarian relatives who are living independently but haven't quite got their heads round streaming.

Pamosonic · 26/12/2024 14:33

Oh I still have a dvd and cd collection. Good thing with dvds is they don't suffer from the TV channels cutting scenes out etc.

Brough23 · 26/12/2024 14:37

Yup and NO point BUYING them as presents as not even laptops have a DVD drive these days! The old DVD players people have will eventually break. And then it's curtains for DVDs.

Pamosonic · 26/12/2024 14:39

PlayStations and Xbox still play dvds so they are not totally consigned to the history books just yet.

Doseofdopamine · 26/12/2024 14:47

Well why did you get rid of them? I have my entire CD and dvd collection from over the decades. I have my dvd player in my bedroom. I have some great films that are just never aired these days. And I like listening to albums not playlists so I still have my old hi-fi separates which sounds better than my Sonos. You don't need to get rid of stuff just because new things become available.
You can buy a dvd player very cheaply.

If you are say a couple with no kids and don't play video games, it's consigned for them...

Pedallleur · 26/12/2024 14:47

Still got a player and am currently watching West Wing. Watched Game of Thrones recently. All on eBay cheap!

I'm not an octogenarian by any means but I have no desire to stream anything. I still buy DVDs if I want to watch something, and I like to have a physical copy of a DVD or VHS. It's the same with music - whilst I've got a lot of music on iTunes so that I can listen to it whilst I'm working, we've still got every vinyl, cassette, and CD album that we've ever bought, and play them regularly.
