Why do people take the Christmas tree down Boxing Day?

wheredolobely · 26/12/2024 12:43

My Facebook is full of it
Ripped down Christmas night.
I don't understand it.
Most of them had them up since the day after Halloween (when it wasn't even Christmas )
Then rip it down when it's Christmas (12 days of Christmas)
Oh I'm sick of the mess
Need my living room back
Honestly i don't understand the logic
Why not enjoy the festive season as long as possible

Put it up when you like
Take it down when you like

But posting pictures on SM is weird. Everyone who wants a Christmas tree knows how to put it up, make it look pretty and take it down again.

But then some people can't cook a roast, or get a bunch of flowers or order a cocktail without posting a photograph.

Just scroll past OP. Then you don't need to understand the why do some people do.

Because it’s dead 😁

Hate to break it to you but it's been dead since the moment it was chopped down!

I find this irrationally irritating! Don’t put your decorations up in October if you take them down on Boxing Day ! 😡🤣

Havalona · 26/12/2024 17:36

Happy to say I didn't have a tree, lights, or decos. Nothing to take down!

I'm not there, I'm here away from all that shite.

Not always I still have 3 ex trees from a couple of years ago still in pots in my garden . I watered them through the summer . They sometimes have some roots left and are not dead.

in2twentyfivewegothen · 26/12/2024 18:21

Mine went up on the 20th and comes down New Year's Eve. All the tat got put away today.. I cannot stand it! I only leave the tree up because the lights are pretty 🙈

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 26/12/2024 18:30

I will be taking all down on the weekend. We have a birthday on January the 2nd and I like a nice clear distinction for the birthday boy 😁

But why is it irritating? They aren't demanding you take yours down.

I don't put my tree up before December. And I take it down whenever I have the time. Sometimes that's been Boxing Day, sometimes that's Hogmanay and sometimes 2nd January.

The twelfth night means nothing to me. And I like the opportunity to do a big declutter and deep clean before I go back to work as won't have time to do it until February.

That's what works for me and my family. For others they want them up until 12th night. And that's what works for them. Absolutely nothing to get irritated about on either side.

As I admitted in my post . It is irrational. I am grumpy this time of year .Low serotonin levels and past bereavements at this time of year. I have just noticed a pattern that it does seem to be the same people who put them up stupidly 😂early that have them down on Boxing Day. I personally love seeing all trees and lights in my neighbourhood for as long as possible over the festive period and feel sad when they are prematurely taken down. Anyone else feel the same ?

tinytemper66 · 26/12/2024 18:52

Taking mine down New Year's Day as we are away from 2nd-5th. Hate starting a new term with the remnants of Christmas lingering. Will leave the crib up though.

cunoyerjudowel · 26/12/2024 18:54

Mine is down as I have to work all the Xmas holidays and only had Xmas and Boxing Day off so I had to put it away while I had time

It's a big tree and I like to clean and rejig my lounge back to normal

magicalmrmistoffelees · 26/12/2024 18:55

I don’t get why it’s irritating either. I couldn’t care less when people take their decorations down and I didn’t realise that people had an opinion on when I do it!

cunoyerjudowel · 26/12/2024 18:55

I must add that I will be donating it to the charity shop on my next day off so needed to get it packed up and ready

RabbitsRock · 26/12/2024 19:00

We put ours up at the beginning of December & usually take it down around Jan 5th. DD16 decorated it this year & it looks stunning so we want to enjoy it.

cunoyerjudowel · 26/12/2024 19:00

I think sometimes people forget that not everyone has the full Xmas period off and actually it can be a really busy work time for people - I often get cancelled rest days around new year so take advantage of getting the tree away when I can.

I decorate around 10th dec - for the kids (teenagers) but can't handle the thought of having it out past January which could be the case if my days off get cancelled.

Also, decorations left out too long past January remind me of sudden death of family members and the renaming family feeling unable to take them down- hence why they are up in feb / march

Wendysfriend · 26/12/2024 12:58

How dirty are all these people's houses, do they not clean while the tree is up 🤔

I know, and the tree only takes up one corner, they can clean the rest of the house around it, can't they.

Ours stays up usually until the Sunday before back to work. So this year the 5th. I like to enjoy twinkly lights as long as I can.

TooManyChristmasCards · 26/12/2024 13:03

Because Christmas is finished? My tree comes off after Christmas, the day after boxing day if possible. Time to move on.

I do find it weird when people have trees in November or in January, December is more than enough, but each to their own. I think Christmas is more enjoyable and special if it's not 3 months long.

Christmas isn't finished. Unless you consider it to be only one day.
Traditionally, Christmas is the start of the 12 days of Christmas festive season. So it feels weird to me to stop just as it's starting.

SunshineAfterTheRainR · 26/12/2024 19:05

I like mine up for a few weeks, from about 7th December ish until just before new year. I’ll take ours down in a couple of days and then have a big clean again and set up for New Year’s Eve. It feels special to celebrate Christmas during the advent season but we also enjoy new year too, without the decorations - couldn’t do new year with Christmas stuff up.

Arraminta · 26/12/2024 19:29

It's like the depressing line from the Stephen Dobyns poem "Everything I do I rush through, so I can do something else"

So few people nowadays seem able to 'just be' to just live in the moment, take a breath and simply enjoy it.

I hate that people are already champing at the bit for New Year's Eve (nope, I'm happy just savouring these quiet days that blend together between Xmas & NYE). Or even worse, wittering on about how excited they are for Spring (nope, I'm going to enjoy the weeks and weeks of deep Midwinter first, thanks).

pizzaHeart · 26/12/2024 19:33

Some people only have tree up while hosting and take it down at the first opportunity before going back to work and it’s Boxing Day for them .

Not everyone has the luxury of savouring the quiet days. Plus I fucking hate winter. Roll on Spring.

Many, many people work on those ‘quiet days’.

Tiddlywinkly · 26/12/2024 19:45

We're a family of atheists. The (fake) tree and decorations goes up first weekend of December and are packed away before NYE. As others have said, I'm fed up of them by then, I like starting the year clutter-free and as we're not religious, the celebrations are just December.

worcesterpear · 26/12/2024 20:13

I don't get the working excuse, surely most of us work on most days in December, albeit many get Christmas day and Boxing Day off. Should we just not put up trees at all if we don't get two weeks off work, or only put them up for two days if we get the bank holidays off? Traditionally, people didn't put them until Christmas Eve and then I think it was for the twelve nights.
