Why do people take the Christmas tree down Boxing Day?

wheredolobely · 26/12/2024 12:43

My Facebook is full of it
Ripped down Christmas night.
I don't understand it.
Most of them had them up since the day after Halloween (when it wasn't even Christmas )
Then rip it down when it's Christmas (12 days of Christmas)
Oh I'm sick of the mess
Need my living room back
Honestly i don't understand the logic
Why not enjoy the festive season as long as possible

This is the problem with Christmas. Advent used to be a time of quiet reflection (a bit like Lent) and then there were the twelve days. Now people start flapping about being “ready” from mid November and there’s a mad orgy of consumption for about six weeks until Christmas.

It’s the reason people do dry January. They’ve been boozing since mid November.

No one is saying you have to - but others want to

CarolinaInTheMorning · 26/12/2024 13:22

For those suggesting this is an American custom; maybe some people take the tree down on the day after Christmas, but in my long life, I have never known someone who did this. For one thing, it's traditional in the US to wait until after Thanksgiving to start decorating for Christmas. We usually do it around the middle of December. For another thing, lots of people are working as we don't have Boxing Day. Also there are lots of parties and events between Christmas and the New Year so decorations are up for those. In our case, we celebrate Hogmanay so we want decorations up for that.

Also religion plays a larger role in Christmas in the US than it does in the UK and many people, especially Catholics and Episcopalians, observe the Twelve Days of Christmas, including Epiphany on January 6.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 26/12/2024 13:28

Boxing Day is very much part of Christmas for me. In fact, the Christmas period in our house is really Xmas Eve to New Year’s Day. Still got nearly two weeks of school holidays.

We put the tree up a week or two into December and will take it down a few days into Jan, but I think a lot of people just generally put their decorations up earlier nowadays. Straight after Halloween is very strange to me, but each to their own.

Tbf I kinda understand it. Today I've work up and the living room just feels dusty and like it needs a good clean, the tree just looks like it's collecting dust for me now. Didn't yesterday but today I'm like right when can it go 😂😂😂

RelativePitch · 26/12/2024 13:39

I like to undecorate on the evening of Epiphany. It's not a massive deal, but we do like to do the Kings' cake on the 6th as a nod to the day.

Nothatgingerpirate · 26/12/2024 13:40

Put it up on the 23rd. Will come down on the 31st.
Hardly any decorations, just my husband and myself here.
😁

coolkatt · 26/12/2024 13:42

Mine is coming down because that's what I always do and I want my house back to normal, away to start 12 hour nightshift few days off to catch up on cleaning washing etc then another set of nights so this is the only decent time for me right now.

Dontcallmescarface · 26/12/2024 13:42

Mine goes up the day I finish work (last Friday), and will go down on NYD before I'm back at work on the 2nd. I hate the tree being up when I have to work. I don't have any small children around anymore (DD is in her 30's now), so I really don't see the point of putting it up earlier or taking it down later. Each to their own though.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 26/12/2024 13:47

We only finished decorating for Christmas yesterday. They'll be up until twelfth night as is tradition.

NippyCrab · 26/12/2024 13:48

It feels like people are just rushing life, let's get onto/prep for the next thing! Or as someone up thread said, it's a showboating post, like the one active at the moment. My treeS are coming down the MAIN one is down, cue the how many do you have? OP: We have 5 😊
We really do need the eye roll emoji MNHQ 😂

ARichtGoodDram · 26/12/2024 13:51

Ours comes down on the 27th as we have kids birthdays the 28th and the 30th.

Pohgi · 26/12/2024 13:58

Mine is down, although wouldn’t post about it on fb, just want normality tbh, had a crappy year/Christmas and it’s bringing me much more joy to just not have it and having the house just normal then to have it up.

Efacsen · 26/12/2024 14:01

There's an Xmas tree recycling point round the corner - 2 or 3 trees by Xmas Day evening - some folks are really keen!!

And 20 or so by the end of Boxing Day

Gettingbysomehow · 26/12/2024 14:06

I don't put one up. I have an aversion to dead trees or fake ones inside the house. It's all kinds of wrong. I have strings of lights which are nice at any time of year.

JetskiSkyJumper · 26/12/2024 14:10

I used to do this. I think it was an anxiety thing and wanting to get back to normal and avoid any more overwhelm. I don't do it now and feel sad that is used too. Hopefully my kids don't remember me whipping it down so soon.

Tisfortired · 26/12/2024 14:12

Ours went up on 1st December which was early for us. It’s driving me mad with needles dropping everywhere so it’ll probably come down at the weekend but I’ll leave the lights up a little longer as Dh and the kids love them. It’s DS2s birthday on NYE and I like to have it all down by then so I can decorate for his birthday.

WorriedRelative · 26/12/2024 14:16

Because they put them up far far far too early.

WorriedRelative · 26/12/2024 14:18

TooManyChristmasCards · 26/12/2024 13:03

Because Christmas is finished? My tree comes off after Christmas, the day after boxing day if possible. Time to move on.

I do find it weird when people have trees in November or in January, December is more than enough, but each to their own. I think Christmas is more enjoyable and special if it's not 3 months long.

Christmas isn't finished until 12th night, that's on January.

Frenchfemme · 26/12/2024 14:22

triballeader · 26/12/2024 12:57

Ours does not go up till the last Sunday in advent. that’s the Sunday closest to Christmas Day and then stays up for the whole season of Christmas til Candlemass (2nd Feb)

I do the same. Brightens up January 🎄

Happyinarcon · 26/12/2024 14:25

No one takes their tree down on Boxing Day. It’s just another AI generated topic. Soon there will be posts about how people are running out and buying hot cross buns in January and arguing that Easter doesn’t mean anything anymore

shewillbefinestopworrying · 26/12/2024 14:40

Why does anyone care? Mine will be coming down tomorrow. I couldn't care less if another person leaves them up till March. The only rules and traditions that matter are the ones you create and the only rules that exist are the ones you set for yourself in regard to how, when and if you celebrate Christmas. It's nobody else's business. You will get judgement as you do with many things in life but let them...For those that want them down, enjoy your space and for those that don't enjoy your lights. In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter.

coolkatt · 26/12/2024 15:20

I've started my Easter egg collection, looked out all the decorations while I'm in the loft putting Xmas stuff away and got my Easter wreath up to welcome the new year and arrival of spring. Got 12 Easter eggs up till now don't want to leave it to last min shops might run out.

ZippyDeer · 26/12/2024 15:21

My tree doesn’t come down until 6th January. It’s my birthday on 5th and always has the tree and decorations up to help celebrate. I feel it would be unlucky to take it down before. I do take Christmas cards down to make room for any cards I might have. Just my personal preference.

Loads of mumsnetters do because the tree has been up since Halloween.

I'm a big believer of keeping traditional holidays at the correct time - Halloween at Halloween, Christmas at Christmas, Easter at Easter. It keeps them special and I don't then get bored of the idea.

TheFlyingHorse · 26/12/2024 15:28

I really love the period between Christmas and New Year and consider that to be "Christmas" so we don't normally take our tree down until 12th night. However it doesn't go up until a week or two before Christmas and it still looks and smells beautiful.

I suppose the question for me is why do people put their tree up so early that they're sick of it by Boxing Day and want to take it down? It seems that people put decs up much earlier these days.
