The Christmas tree is down!

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

Madness. The two turtle doves are only on their way today. You've got ages till the drummers start drumming.

Will be illegal when I become a petty dictator of the world.

Exactly

As you will see from this thread many of us have a tradition of celebrating in the period leading up to Christmas Day although our tree doesn’t go up until about 10 days before. I’m sorry you’re so intolerant to accept that others celebrate in a different way than you - neither is right or wrong.

What do you feel I’m being intolerant of? I don’t care what you do. I’m merely pointing out when Christmas actually is. 1- 24 Dec is Advent not Christmas itself. There is no tradition of celebrating Christmas in November it’s purely a commercial ploy.

AnarchismUK · 26/12/2024 16:09

Why bother celebrating Christmas (it only began yesterday) when you're already dismantling decorations? Twelfth night is ages yet.

No. We love decorations, seasonal cheer, food, celebrations, Nativity sets, gifts everywhere and mounting the new games, we always have at least one with a course.

Life is for living not cleaning. I am hotel maid, the job is more enough for me to feel everything needs to be impeccable

Fannyannie · 26/12/2024 16:10

Competition who gets the tree up the earliest.
Competition who takes it down the soonest.

rush rush rush

Life is so short. Slow down & smell the coffee.

Because some of us start celebrating early in December - I love events on every day throughout the month accumulating on 25 December. We don’t celebrate 12th night.

My parents rang me to tell me they had taken the tree down today and they can forget about Christmas and it's all back to normal.

In their 50 shades of greige house. It's really sad, there's no background of needing to see the back of Christmas, or the year, they do this every year.

This is what I find really weird, I think. Not just the taking down of decorations within five minutes of Christmas Day being over, but the impulse to immediately phone people up (or post on MN) to tell everyone you've done it. Are people supposed to be impressed or something? Wowed by your efficiency? Within certain reasonable parameters nobody cares what you do in your own house.

they are a probably OCD or stiff upper lip or whatever. Some form of a general in need of putting things in boxes with labels and a long list of small script telling everyone the consequences for those who don't live the way they don't want them to.

WonderingWanda · 26/12/2024 16:13

No, we'vejust had our boxing day cold meat feast and we are now sat round the tree and the fire snoozing. I like keeping mine up to the very end and like to lights and twinkles for NYE parties too!!

YellowPixie · 26/12/2024 16:13

This idea of "Christmas" starting on 25th December and going through to 6th January is very outdated. We just don't live like that any more for hte most part. For most people, "Christmas" as a season starts some time in December and culminates on the 25th, perhaps flowing over into today.

Nobody in my world thinks that 3rd/4th/5th January is "Christmas".

Then it's not Christmas, you're celebrating Advent. It's a Christian festival whose dates does not shift...25/12-06/01.

Edited

We don’t celebrate 12th night so we’re now getting ready for celebrations for NYE.

Your intolerance is a lack of acknowledgement that everyone has their own traditions and celebrates in their own way.

I’m not sure that many of us that do Christmas decs etc actually celebrate Christmas really. For a lot of people it’s a secular festival. Even those who are Christian will do their timings of things differently if they’re English, Greek or Dutch. None of the rules are the one and only true Christmas.

Enterthedragonqueen · 26/12/2024 16:15

There was a poster on mnet who put their tree up on 1st of Nov, sheer madness.

We atheists so don’t follow the religious dates. We have our own traditions.

Mumofnarnia · 26/12/2024 16:16

Funny how these people who take their trees down early say it doesn’t equal Christmas but have a Christmas tree and put it up in the first place…. For Christmas 😂

MrsMurphyIWish · 26/12/2024 16:18

I will take mine down 5th Jan - every day of my holiday is Christmas! 🎄

Isthisreasonable · 26/12/2024 16:23

If you're going to take it down on the 2nd day of Christmas, why call it a Christmas tree?

All the trees and garlands and other decorations come down on NYE so we go into 2025 with a fresh start. Big vase of whatever Spring flowers are available on the table in the kitchen. Happy New Year and off we go into whatever it brings. My adult children's father committed suicide in 2024 so I shall not be sorry to see the back of it all

Ah I’m sorry about that @AngelinaFibres It’s no wonder that you’ll be glad to see the back of 2024. Wishing you and your children a happier 2025.
@blackheartsgirl I totally get what you mean. For me it’s New Year’s Eve that is like that, because I went through a time from 10 to 14yrs old when someone significant passed away during the year, and I ended up dreading who I’d lose the next year. I can see why you find Christmas hard.

To the OP, our tree stays up until the first week of January usually. When I was working I’d have to take it down before the 6th as I’d hate to come home from work and have to face taking it down then. Now I’m thrilled to be able to leave it up until the 7th! However still hate the thought of taking it down as there’s so much clutter around the house while we dismantle everything and put them away (it’s like Christmas Central here-decorations and trees everywhere.) I have to confess that I love the feeling of “space” after everything has been put away though.

I bet you pile all the money up in the middle of the board when playing Monopoly and give it to the next person to land on Free Parking, too.

Longma · 26/12/2024 16:24

Ours will come down at the weekend. We go away for the week on Monday so want it all down before then, so not coming back to it all in January.

Our tree and declarations didn't go up until the 25th so it's not been up for a fortnight even yet. And the tree still smells lovely and it's not dropping at all. We've also managed to chose one which isn't too wide this year so it's not taking over the room much.

Longma · 26/12/2024 16:25

We also still have family over today so wouldn't take it down til we no longer have visitors.

MrsMurphyIWish · 26/12/2024 16:27

Just remembered, I did take the tree down on the 27th around 8 years ago. DS’ Godfather bought him a fucking ride along car and he kept ploughing into the tree. Last year we had no decorations at all (building works/sad times) - I actually may keep them up all year round ti make up for it!
