Baby touched phone screen. Concerned about germs

Very PFB of me I know but my 9 week old DS was flailing arms about and reached out and connected with my phone screen. He likes chewing his hands so he then had it in his mouth 5 seconds later.

I read that the average phone screen is 10x dirtier than a toilet seat. I do Milton wipe it when I remember but thinking back, the last time I did this was probably a week ago.

Is it very likely he will be sick or just my PPA talking?

No harm done.

He will be absolutely fine. Hope you are having a wonderful first Christmas with your baby.

Cerealkiller4U · 25/12/2024 17:13

He will be fine….he does in fact need to be open to germs….its how his immune system gets better

In the nicest possible way, OP, yes you have gone beyond PFB and firmly into bonkers territory there. He will be absolutely fine. And my two pence worth - it's the babies who are actively kept away from muck that seem to get sick most often!

SnakesAndArrows · 25/12/2024 17:14

He’ll be fine. It’s not the screen that’s the issue, really, just that many people’s hand hygiene is… questionable, so many screens are filthy. I expect yours is pretty good?

DarkAndTwisties · 25/12/2024 17:21

Do you wash your hands every time you touch your screen, before you touch him?

Turophilic · 25/12/2024 17:24

Happy first Christmas with your baby!

Yes, you’re right you are being very over the top in PFB mode. Your baby will be absolutely fine.

stichguru · 25/12/2024 17:25

He'll touch lots of things over the next years. It will be fine.

MiraculousLadybug · 25/12/2024 17:26

I'm sorry you've got PPA, OP. It really does a number on you and makes you worry about everything! I got it with DC1 and was Miltoning everything constantly. Your baby is going to be fine. 💖 Don't get any ideas from this thread about washing your hands whenever you touch your phone or similar. Are you on medication for the PPA? Talk to your HV when you can about it if you haven't already.

Cynic17 · 25/12/2024 17:28

Babies need to be in contact with germs in order to develop an immune system. We'll have all put many kinds of crap (sometimes literally!) into our mouths. Back off with the Milton, OP, and let your curious child explore the world.

Completely agree with this.

batshitaboutcatshit · 25/12/2024 17:34

Extremely unlikely he will catch something.

When I had my first born I was anxious like this and a health visitor said to me to remember that people who have second, third and fourth children will have so many germs passed on to their babies from the other kids.

It does take a while to relax about germs, accidents etc.

Hope you're having a lovely first Christmas with your baby.

KnittedCardi · 25/12/2024 17:34

Honestly nothing to worry about. Think about families with many siblings, cuddling anc touching the baby. Babies are actually very, very resilient. He will still have your immunity, and in X couple of weeks will need to start building his own.

Step away from the Milton and enjoy your baby.

Yes I'm sure there's evidence to suggest that children brought up in a very sterile environment are more likely to develop leukaemia.

FatFiatMultiplaWhopper · 25/12/2024 17:37

He will be fine. The species would have died out a long time ago if a moment touching something that someone else had touched was fatal.

Berlinlover · 25/12/2024 17:39

This is the most insane thing I’ve read on Mumsnet in a while and that’s saying something.

ChiliFiend · 25/12/2024 17:52

I have had health anxiety since I was a teenager. It's helped me to know that it is scientifically proven that babies' immune systems develop via their interactions with germs. If you were sheltering your baby so much that they never encountered any, you'd be doing them a disservice. I hope you're able to get some help; worrying about this kind of thing can really affect your quality of life.

EducatingArti · 25/12/2024 17:54

He will be fine. Give him a few months and he will be licking the floor, and the buggy wheels and more or less everything else!

Oblomov24 · 25/12/2024 17:55

Good grief, please be calmed, this is a crazy thought.

Georgyporky · 25/12/2024 17:59

My PFB somehow got his hand in his shitty nappy when I was changing him, then in his mouth before I could stop him.
No ill effects.

doodleschnoodle · 25/12/2024 18:05

@batshitaboutcatshit Yep!

This is definitely your PPA speaking, OP, it's not even remotely concerning. I hope you're getting some help with it as it must be awful Flowers

rainxe · 25/12/2024 18:07

My toddler ate mud off his buggy wheels and was fine. I'm sure your baby will be okay.

AdviceAdvice123 · 25/12/2024 18:07

This is your PPA talking OP. This is not something you need to worry about at all. Are you getting good support for it?

oh come on. It’s obvious the PP was talking about communicable illness not gene mutations.

WonderingWanda · 25/12/2024 18:12

He'll be licking the floor or other babies faces soon enough.
