This is my first year of not working over the holidays due to taking early retirement as a band 8 nurse.
I want to take this opportunity to thank anyone working tonight and tomorrow! 💐 🍫 🍷

Social work on call tonight and tomorrow, over 18's.

I hope it’s not too busy for you, have been there.

Spacecowboys · 24/12/2024 20:05

ACP in a hospital.

Stressfordays · 24/12/2024 20:06

Another nurse here! My rota is quite nice for a change. Had today off, working Xmas day afternoon, 27th, 28th and Nye.

sunshinechaser · 24/12/2024 20:06

Hospital pharmacist. Nobody who doesn't work in a hospital really knows what we do but we're in over the festive period and super busy.

I know what you do! Speaking as a grateful patient with a chronic condition, you’re my safety net and source of information.

I pack frozen fish in a factory. We get Christmas Day off.
It sucks.

Worked today - speech therapist in forensic psychiatry ward

I never realised that forensic psychiatry needs speech therapists

Cabin crew. Why people want to fly on Christmas day is beyond me. Utterly selfish. Surely you can wait a day or two to catch that flight?

What's more selfish and greedy is the airlines scheduling flights for those days and forcing their staff to work it without any extra pay or incentives.

Anyone scheduled to work on these days obviously doesn't want to ring in sick as some other poor colleague will be called out to cover them. It makes me so angry.

Because the airlines offer cheap flights so those who don't celebrate take advantage. Don't blame the passengers!

fixingmylife · 24/12/2024 20:11

I'm a professional chorister in a cathedral. It's relentless but very enjoyable and doesn't seem like work.

Very much so - huge number of patients who also have a brain injury, a learning disability, autism or another communication disorder. Prisons are full to the brim with people who have an undiagnosed additional need who just bounce back if they don’t get the right support... Plus all the other stuff that affects the general population too like swallow disorders, voice disorders… we do a huge amount of stuff, everyone has to communicate and odds are if you’ve landed up in a secure unit because of something you’ve done to someone else, there will have been a communication breakdown somewhere. It’s fascinating (and harrowing).

Although today we just played games and had a mini disco and buffet!!

Normal office job, work in marketing. Only get the bank holiday days off so back in Friday and all next week except Wednesday. Didn’t have enough annual leave to take any extra days this year.

Foyerstaff · 24/12/2024 20:17

I work in Young people’s supported housing. It’s a mix of 16-24. Some are children in care living in our scheme. We are 24/7 but semi independent living.

Some will visit family and friends often returning later in day or in the days to come. Others stay - These young people often say they aren’t bothered but truth is they are.

We aren’t their parents but often we are the most consistent adults in their lives and we work all the holidays to ensure they have support needed.

FranksInvisibleLlama · 24/12/2024 20:20

I’m a nurse in a children’s hospital. I am off tomorrow but working all day Thursday.

twisted by name, twisted by nature.

Hospital doctor. Though husband and I both have tomorrow off this year (second time in 14 years!), which is amazing as our 3yo is so excited for Christmas.

It’s tricky to feel too sorry for yourself when you’re working in a hospital at Christmas. Though I remember walking home one Christmas morning post-nights and realising the local Starbucks was open. I did feel really bad for the staff doing that shift.

Thewrongdoor · 24/12/2024 20:26

I work in TV. Am working Christmas Day and Boxing Day and all the rest of this week and next.

You know why though @Rabinroo - it's cheaper. Solidarity x

ImagineRainbows · 24/12/2024 20:30

I’m a midwife.

It’s pretty magical working Christmas Eve night / Christmas Day morning while we wait for the first Christmas baby to arrive.

I have it off this year though which is also exciting.

HouseofHolbein · 24/12/2024 20:38

Support worker here. Working today tomorrow Boxing Day and Friday. All late shifts. At least I'm off for new year 😊

WWY · 24/12/2024 20:42

Nanny. I'm working NYE but only in the day so I can still go out in the evening. Luckily for me it was optional.

Soccermumamir · 24/12/2024 20:54

Thank you to every single one of you who are working over the holidays. I really hope you get some downtime, whether that be at work or at home 🙏

For years, I worked in retail and would work up until Xmas Eve, then back in Boxing Day. I then worked in nurseries for years. I worked again up until Xmas Eve, then had Xmas day and boxing day off and back in on the 27th if it landed on a week day.

I am currently now working term time.

iolaus · 24/12/2024 20:56

Midwife - but have the 25th and 26th off this year (may actually be the first year (aside from maternity leave - and he's 14 now) I've had them both off since I qualified.) Did work today though and am working all New Years (including on call overnight - though I actually quite like that shift)

DoraMcEvabs · 24/12/2024 21:00

Retail. Just finished for the day and working 10 - 3 tomorrow then 7- 4 on Boxing Day. I get Friday off though!

Hepzibar · 24/12/2024 21:03

Thank you to every one of you who are working at Christmas, NHS staff, police, paramedics, pharmacists, prison staff , hospitality, support workers, care homes, housing, social care - I could go on.
Thank you

whataballbag · 24/12/2024 21:12

Ambulance control, off today and tomorrow, back in Boxing Day, feel very lucky
