But that’s all fiddling round the edges while Rome burns, isn’t it? What about growth - for which the bold claim was that be the fastest growing in the G7? The tone of your reply just underlines my point - an unwillingness to (a) face facts and (b) debate rationally on the part of many (most?) on the left. And an equally fervent belief that anyone who disagrees must be right wing. Personally, I’d say I was center / centre left, but have voted for all major parties in my time, depending on policies and what I thought the country needed. This Governemnt is not centre left - it’s almost Corbyn like in its ideologically misguided thinking.
Nationalise Rail. Sure, but to what end? The infrastructure bit was already nationalised, and that was a major cause of delays. The balance being strikes. The pay ‘deal’ hasn’t sorted that problem out, because they’re aren’t enough drivers, because its effectively a closed shop.
Tax the greedy business by raising NI, but not foreseeing the consequences. Simply an ideological belief that business is bad and should pay. Public sector is good and should run everything.
I despair at the long term damage being done, akin to the damage done to by the last Labour government to the aspirations of a generation of young people, all because they wanted to manipulate the u employment figures. Result, a huge number of graduates, with no investment in growing sectors of the economy they could be employed in. Overlay that with the biggest sustained transfer of wealth from the public the the private sector with the myriad of in-work benefits subsidising business and you end up with 2 generations for whom the average graduate starting salary isn’t really much more than national living wage, and more dangerously, the ability to progress one’s career and salary is also limited because little money is investing in growth areas.
Then this Government is suggesting is piling into renewables to decarbonise the economy. Three problems with this. Firstly it’s not new technology - I was involved in setting up fast growing renewables businesses a decade and a half ago, and this is well under way. Secondly, it’s crowing out private money, and history shows that’s not the road to success. Thirdly there’s not strategic plan for the national grid and long term energy security. Renewable energy is not necessarily possible where the demand is, so that needs investment and a plan. Why aren't they investing in new technology provide growth, future income, higher skilled jobs?
I could go on, but the likely response here will be ‘but they’re not the Tory’s. It’s laughable that pre election there was all the chatter about the grown ups soon being charge. What those who were keen to keep repeating that are unhappy about is that this set of ‘grown ups’ are no less self serving than the last and, ironically, that , they are now unwilling to enter into grown up debates about it. Instead they are relying on school playground techniques of thinking if they repeat something often enough and loud enough they will be believed, even if there’s no substance to back up their position 😂
