Christmas opinions. Give me yours.

  1. I want a Christmas tree with tinsel on it. This time of year is not about being elegant and classy. It's about fun and joy, and that's what tinsel on a tree does for me.
  1. Christmas stockings should be hung with the toe pointing to the left. They look wrong facing the other direction. I didn't realise that I had strong opinions on this until today.

Tell me what your Christmas opinions are!

I hadn’t thought about the direction of stockings before but you’re right and incorrectly hung stockings will now annoy me for years to come.

I opened a Christmas card this morning and thought it was a really interesting design of a Santa. Really liked it, then realised I was holding it upside down and it’s actually a car etc. so it is now on my mantle piece upside down. Does that rattle you? 🫣

Re point No 2. All ours point to the right.

Most of the males in our family are left-handed.

Is there a connection?

GameOfJones · 24/12/2024 11:15

Christmas crackers are rubbish. Usually filled with tat that goes straight to landfill and paper crowns that are annoying to wear.

This is the only thing I'm a Grinch about. I love everything else 🤣

Have to disagree. I have been fixing loose screws in pairs of glasses with a tiny screwdriver I got in a cracker years ago.

Most useful thing I got that Xmas.

I think that it might have to do with handedness. We're mostly right handed (with one ambidextrous thrown into the mix). Would be interesting to see what others say.

All Christmas songs except carols are awful including Fairytale of New York.

Adults don't need any gifts

They don't need them, that's true. But it's still nice to give someone something that you think they'll love. Giving any old thing, just to 'give', is totally pointless.

Sprouts are the food of the gods.

Falderalagain · 24/12/2024 13:32

Bubble and squeak with cold meats on Boxing ay is the best meal of Christmas

MrsSunshine2b · 24/12/2024 17:19

Our stockings point to the right and are decorated so they can only point one way so that's interesting.

My opinion is that "aesthetic" Xmas decorations are soulless.

Goes double for the grey/silver/white colour scheme Xmas decorations and triple for the awful black trees people are trying to pretend are Christmassy.

  1. My tree and house has lots of tinsel and it all looks as far removed from tacky as can be. It's stunning
  1. Don't care
Unescorted · 24/12/2024 17:27

It is stressful because of the expectations we put on ourselves.

Unescorted · 24/12/2024 17:29

Our decorations are soooo kitch and over the top. DD has out done herself this year.

DappledThings · 24/12/2024 17:29

Agree with tinsel.

Decorations should all stay up throughout the 12 days of Christmas.

Unless you are having roast beef then you shouldn't be adding Yorkshire pudding to your Christmas dinner.

Hard disagree on the Yorkshire pudding. It belongs with any meat that can be roast. That said, we don't have them because our main event is Beef Wellington and that's covered with pastry.

I'm very pleased that there are others that love tinsel.

I love lit-up windows. Lit up whole houses not so much.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 24/12/2024 17:49

It's not a proper Christmas unless you have a giant tube of jellytots.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 24/12/2024 17:52

Tinsel is essential and is the true spirit of Christmas.
Sprouts are delicious just as they are. They don't need shredding with bacon and walnuts or whatever fancy recipe you can think of. Just boiled until they are soft. Yumtastic.

Christmas Dinner doesn't need a starter.

Presents should be opened one at a time turn and turn about.

Now I would have Yorkshire pudding with a beef Wellington. The turkey negates the acceptability of YPs, the pastry does not.

Yes and yes! Starter ahead of the biggest dinner of the year baffles me.

cakeorwine · 24/12/2024 17:56

Crackers and hats.
What's the point?
I hate being expected to put a hat on which has come out of a cracker.

AnyoneSomeone · 24/12/2024 17:57

1970s prawn cocktail starters are the best bit of Christmas dinner. Coloured fairy lights are prettier and more festive than warm white lights. Always tinsel.

StressedQueen · 24/12/2024 17:58

I love tinsel!

I hate the idea of buying for everybody in my family and only really enjoy buying for my 5 children, close friends, and husband (DH and I only do one big gift each anyway). This year, we just did a Secret Santa within our family which made life easier!

Chipshopninja · 24/12/2024 18:00

Giving cash is pointless and tacky, especially to kids.

If you can't be arsed to think of anything then ask the parents/family

I'd rather people who do this didn't bother

*agree about stocking toes!
