What do you have in your Christmas dinner?

Growing up we had turkey, rice, peas, corn and carrots, mashed and roast potatoes, Brussel sprouts and asparagus. Living abroad I've had lamb, soup, and a hog roast.

Now I'm much more traditional and will do turkey, roast potatoes, Brussel sprouts, red cabbage, carrots, parsnips,Yorkshire puddings and pigs in blankets. Never tried bread sauce or cauliflower cheese even though they are a staple in most homes on Christmas. What is your ideal Christmas dinner?

This year we are having: roast chicken, rolled roast sirloin, yorkshire puddings, stuffing, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, carrot and parsnip mash, cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage, sprouts, bread sauce, 2 types of gravy (chicken and beef, obviously!) and cranberry sauce.

Miresquire · 23/12/2024 21:38

Turkey
Gammon
Pigs in blankets
Pork stuffing
Sage and onion stuffing
Yorkshire puddings
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Roast carrots
Sprouts
Red cabbage
Cauliflower cheese
Bread sauce
Gravy
Redcurrant jelly

More or less the same as I had growing up except we didn’t have Yorkshire puddings - I live in Yorkshire now so have been persuaded.

My Gran always did an ox tongue alongside the turkey, but I never even tried it.

We vary pudding every year as no one likes Christmas pudding. This year we have a sticky toffee pudding and a trifle, plus a Christmas Colin.

Can’t wait.

Lots of people having chicken instead of turkey lately. Some of these sound like absolute feasts 🤤

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/12/2024 20:59

Fairly simple (less faff for the cook). Turkey, loads of roast potatoes, roast parsnips, lots of pigs in blankets, stuffing, carrots and sprouts, cranberry sauce, plenty of proper gravy, made in the roasting tin.

Pretty much the same - carrots mashed with swede though. Only one meat - ham is for Boxing Day. Only one type of potato and no Yorkshire puddings.

Aliflowers · 23/12/2024 21:52

worrisome34 · 23/12/2024 20:50

Turkey, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, homemade cauliflower cheese, stuffing, honey roasted parnsnips, carrots. I would have liked red cabbage but couldn't get any and I would also like a Yorkshire pudding but Dh said they don't belong on a Christmas dinner.

Followed by Yule log and a cheeseboard.

I would also like a Yorkshire pudding but Dh said they don't belong on a Christmas dinner.

@worrisome34 but why don’t you just have them for yourself. Neither myself or DH eat Yorkshire’s with Christmas dinner but most of the kids do and some of our other guests do we make them for them. Surely Christmas is eating the things you want

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 23/12/2024 21:53

Stuffed mushrooms or pate and toast for starter about 12 ish
Beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, Brussels, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, swede and carrot mash, peas, gravy, about 2.30 ish
Christmas pudding or sticky toffee pudding with custard, cream or ice cream about 5 ish.

GivingUpFinally · 23/12/2024 22:00

Being not British...we have a similar traditional Christmas dinner. But I don't understand why anyone would have two different types of potatoes? Seems fairly common.

We're having

Slow braised leg of lamb (I'm the only one who likes turkey sadly)
Mashed potatoes
Orange and honey glazed baby carrots
Roasted parsnips
Roasted sprouts with leeks and parmigiano
(Sounds strange but it works)
Peas
Steamed green beans with parsley and garlic butter
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puds
Gravy

Pudding
Pumpkin pie with whipped cream

Homemade eggnog

ChangeEmailAddress · 23/12/2024 22:00

Turkey, slow cooked lamb, sausages, bacon rolls, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, mashed potato, roast parsnips, cauli/broccoli cheese, red cabbage, sprouts, carrots, peas, stuffing & gravy.

We have mixed cold starters too, and then Christmas pudding, trifle and then cheese& crackers.

No Yorkshire puddings unless the second meat is beef.

Floralnomad · 23/12/2024 22:03

Turkey or gammon , roast potatoes , pigs in blankets , mashed swede , Brussels , parsnips , carrots , cauliflower and yorkshires . Stuffing and cranberry for those who want it and gravy

Jellycatspyjamas · 23/12/2024 22:06

Turkey and/or ham, roast potatoes, maple glazed carrots and parsnips, red cabbage, stuffing, pigs in blankets. The jury is out on yorkshires, depends if I can be arsed. There will be gravy and cranberry for those who want it. Starters will be lentil soup or pate and Melba toast.

Dessert is sticky toffee pudding or ice cream and fruit.

Leftover ham and turkey will be turned into a pie for later in the week and ham, egg and chips for Boxing Day.

I love doing Christmas dinner - basically a pimped up roast but so good.

I grew up abroad in a hot country so it would always be BBQ's, salad, steak, sausages, ham, coleslaw etc.

I've lived in the UK 20yrs now, and although I have cooked turkey before, its not our favourite. We prefer food we really enjoy. This year we're having:
Rib of beef
Yorkshires
Roast carrots, parsnips and potaotes
Brussels, bacon and chestnuts
Swede mash
Peas
Broccoli and cauli cheese
Cabbage
Pigs in blankets

Possibly prawn cocktail for entree.

BreadInCaptivity · 23/12/2024 22:28

Hate turkey, so a large rib of beef with:

  • Yorkshire puddings
  • Roast potatoes
  • Roast parsnips
  • Cauliflower cheese (as the children love it)
  • Carrot and Swede buttery mash
  • Tenderstem broccoli
  • Horseradish sauce
  • Lashings of homemade gravy with red wine and rosemary

This is what Xmas '24's dinner with be.

Brined, then roasted whole turkey.

Mounds of fluffy mashed potatoes ( the DC's favourite), side dish casserole of: sauteed butternut squash, onion, shallots, halved Brussels, dried cranberries, all oven roasted. ( Quite pretty as well as delish)!

Fresh green beans, loads of stuffing, swimming in turkey sage gravy.

Lemon bundt cake with fresh zesty lemon glaze, and DC's choice, raspberry jelly, made with the addition of softened vanilla ice-cream and frozen raspberries , topped by whipped cream.
