I’m doing a turkey, a ham and a…

I’ve not cooked duck before, and two fowl seems overkill (literally). Lamb seems like an Xmas/Easter mashup. If I do beef I’ll have to do Yorkshires. I also have a large sprout stalk to roast, a venison stew, fake ham, fake pigs in blankets, real pigs in blankets, fake chicken roast, stuffing balls, a horse, a giraffe and a hippo to gut.

I’ve lost it haven’t I 🙄

I voted duck, it’s quite different to turkey (not like doing a turkey and a chicken for example) and goes with all of the same sides. Although do you need three? Sounds like you are cooking a lot!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/12/2024 14:31

Why do you need three? My Mum always did a turkey, a ham and a spiced beef (which I think is just an Irish thing) for big family Christmas with all the uncles, aunts and cousins. I always felt a bit too much for me. Now I just do a turkey and Mum and my brother come to us and have complained that they are missing out on anything.

You haven't even mentioned the roast potatoes.Shock

I voted beef, but unless you have bloody loads of people for dinner I’d leave it at turkey and ham.

BigDahliaFan · 23/12/2024 14:33

You've lost it.

MumChp · 23/12/2024 14:35

Why do 3 kinds of neat? Isn't 2 fine?

Kleptronic · 23/12/2024 14:37

There’s 7 adults, one’s a veggie. One’s a turkey loather. The others are good eaters 😂 I also live in the land of three meats in the Chinese takeaways so anything less than 3 will be a poor show

OP posts:
MumChp · 23/12/2024 14:37

I would go for beef then.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/12/2024 14:37

one type of meat, plus a veggie/vegan alternative is enough! Turkey or beef.

Ham is a separate meal. Venison stew is a different separate meal.

Meats which need different gravies is a bad idea imo.

Falderalagain · 23/12/2024 14:39

Do some delicious sausages (maybe venison; Toulouse if you like garlic) and have some bacon in with your sprouts. That should satisfy the meat eaters!

Kleptronic · 23/12/2024 14:41

You make a good point about the gravy.

The vegetarian eats wild shot meat that has to be culled…hence the venison. Yeah I’ve deffo lost it

Turkey and ham together is literally Christmas dinner in the vast majority of Irish households.

2025willbemytime · 23/12/2024 14:44

We usually have four meats as I do what everyone wants. This year there is only three for lunch and I'll be doing gammon, duck breast and duck in sauce or maybe gammon and three bird roast. Yorkshire puddings too even though there's no beef 🙄. Ridiculous angst over whether they are allowed with anything but beef or even on a Christmas dinner. So many threads about it. Eat what you want!

mitogoshigg · 23/12/2024 14:50

Just turkey is fine, turkey plus sausages (with or without bacon, I prefer no bacon Blush) plenty of, with ham as well it's definitely enough

ErrolTheDragon · 23/12/2024 14:51

Ham with Turkey is ok (doesn't need gravy) but if you've got pigs in blankets and/or crisp bacon and chipolatas it is a bit piggy all senses.

ItGhoul · 23/12/2024 15:08

You don't need three roast meats for six adults.

Kleptronic · 23/12/2024 15:14

I've got Marksies potato dauphinoise and braised red cabbage, will make cauliflower cheese, have broccoli, carrots, romanesco cauliflower and green beans for ordinary veg. And roast potatoes obvs

Why do they call themselves a vegetarian if they eat meat? That's bonkers.

BigYellowDucky · 23/12/2024 15:30

Well we're doing turkey, gammon and chipolatas wrapped in bacon. And so many sides I've lost count 😳 however we will be 23 in total!

Kleptronic · 23/12/2024 16:45

23! <faints>

You can call yourself a vegetarian and eat wild shot culled meats when you are a total pain in the arse basically.

Just because they will eat culled meat doesn't mean you have to provide it.
But given it's dec 23rd presumably you've already acquired the venison and hopefully stewed and frozen it. (If not fgs don't bother!)

ChronicallySleepy · 23/12/2024 16:50

I voted duck but only because it seems unusual for Christmas dinner and I quite like that idea, although I'm not sure how well it would go with gravy

AdviceAdvice123 · 23/12/2024 16:51

You do not need to do a third meat! It’s not even a third, you’ve got loads of meat based stuff.

Anyone who even hints at it being a poor show will have volunteered themselves to host next year!
