Do not leave it on the side to defrost! That creates a breeding ground for bacteria. Just a quick google will tell you this!

Nothing put in my fridge to defrost actually defrosts. I have therefore been defrosting all manner of things by leaving them on the worktop/in the (cold) oven etc for years and never food-poisoned anyone.

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar same, my fridge actually has an annoying habit of freezing some things 😂

eklaljdj · 24/12/2024 09:06

(Yea I know I can adjust the temp before someone pipes up!)

Ooh - thanks for the reminder. We only have a small turkey joint, but it's in the deep freeze and will need longer than the instructions say. Will check it when I get home!

Set a reminder on my phone to check the turkey when I got home. It says 24-36 hours to defrost (it's small), but my freezer is -25 and my fridge is only +3, so I took it out last night.

I figure it's probably good for a couple of days even once defrosted, so if it's defrosted early it'll be fine.

It is an aldi frozen joint that can apparently be cooked from frozen, so it should be OK, whatever happens. I've got a digital meat thermometer so I'll just ensure it's all up to temperature when cooked.

@Applepoop

Last year we had 10 meat eaters

Get a cockerel. I got one year from the butcher and didn't realise how bloody huge it would be. For 2 adults and two tweenies.
Fed us for days.

We are having a vegan Christmas this year so no turkey to remember.

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar @eklaljdj

That's called survivor's bias!

Some parts of the US are pretty hot @VegTrug It’s not 25 degrees in my kitchen.

eklaljdj · 24/12/2024 22:50

@VegTrug lol yes my kitchen doesn't get to 25C even with the heating on! It's the temperature of the bird that'll matter more than the room, as I say it goes back in the fridge whilst still very cold.

Seeline · 24/12/2024 22:59

Anything above 5 degrees Celsius is warm enough for bacteria to start growing.

How about you read mine properly?

eklaljdj · 24/12/2024 23:08

@Seeline well I do tend to cook it, I don't make poultry sushi, seeing as I've probably had meat defrosted on the counter on average once a week for the last 3 decades (along with everyone else in my extended family, older generations much longer) I think I will take my chances, if it back fires I will come back and let you know so you can say I told you so.

Mines now cooked, sliced and soaking in gravy. House smells divine.
