Why do English people look German?

sarahlayton06 · 22/12/2024 12:41

Why do some white English people (especially women not so much men) look so extremely German? Not French or Italian or Spanish but German.

This is not so much the case with Welsh or Irish or Scottish people.

For example, don’t you think Samantha Womack (who plays Ronnie Mitchell in Eastenders) looks extremely German?

Beyond blue eyes and blonde hair I can't think of any typically German features that don't also fall into Scandinavian or just generally northern Europe features.

I think Germans look quite different to Scandinavians, they have stronger features.

When on holiday my husband and myself are quite often mistaken for Germans, perhaps it’s because we don’t wear football shirts for evening wear 😲

The hotel we stayed in recently was mainly occupied with German guests and you wouldn’t know it, they very much looked English. They were also terribly polite and gracious, and most spoke English really well.

Ha luckily you every med resort I’ve stayed in with Germans has ended with me infuriated with their complete lack of ability to queue and: or wait their turn to be served 😂

Radishknot · 22/12/2024 15:38

I don't think they look Scandinavian at all, usually pale with dark hair and quite short.

Irish people aren’t all pale with dark hair, loads are fair & loads tan easily with brown hair and eyes.

I like Germans on holiday too. They are well behaved and polite and seem able to keep their children under control. I always notice that the older women dress quite nicely too and the families are rarely overweight.

British woman tend to be around 5'5, a generous hourglass shaped with fair hair

A lot of German women look like this too

hotpotlover · 22/12/2024 15:41

What a bizarre thread.

What do you reckon German people look like?

I'm German and have dark brown hair, brown eyes and olive skin in summer.

Germans have always mixed with other people, no matter what Hitler tried to do.

Wir sind ein "Mischvolk"....

Radishknot · 22/12/2024 15:44

The Irish actor Richard Dormer has the look I mean of looking Scandi.

AnotherUnoriginalUsername · 22/12/2024 15:48

If I had to say, I think German people look like Angela Merkel (obviously not all of them 😆)

Jinglejanglenamechanged25 · 22/12/2024 15:56

In the days of timeshare the reps used to always try to talk to me and my father in German so I’m guessing we have the look, we’re both tall with dark blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin that tans rather than olive skin, so I guess that’s ’the look’.

KnittedCardi · 22/12/2024 16:00

Nobody in central Europe is really anything, we are all a mix. The further North you go, the more "pure" the genetic pool, because not many tribes ventured up there, the Nordic peoples came down.

Stereotypes are just that. Italians are not all dark and swarthy. Southern Italians, more likely, yes, Northern Italians are more likely blonde and blue eyed, Germanic, Slavonic type.

I am half Italian. I have the nose and the build. But blue eyed and very blonde, although medium skin which tans. Not from my English father, although he was a bit of a viking, but from my DM's side. They were always mistaken for Germans.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 22/12/2024 16:22

I'm fair skinned (freckled) with blue eyes and very blonde hair. I either get asked if I'm German or Irish on holiday. Less of the Irish now since I stopped dyeing my hair chestnut 🤷‍♀️

Is this a racist joke or what ?

Imagine the uproar if this was another nationality being compared against another.

No more racist that someone from Morocco comparing themselves with people from the neighbouring countries of Algeria, Tunisia or Gibraltar & southern Spain.

jimmyateworld · 22/12/2024 16:40

I'm blonde hair blue eyed with an Irish father. I thought all of us in Northern Europe were quite fair due to the lack of sunshine !!

Caspianberg · 22/12/2024 16:43

Surely everyone looks the same roughly? I mean there is a big difference in what English people look like anyway.

Im 100% ‘English’ as far back as I know. I now live in German speaking country and everyone looks like they could pass as English if I didn’t speak to them. People automatically talk to us in German so we must ‘look German’ enough also.
My child looks the same as pretty much all the children at his nursery. The children are a range of ‘local German or Austrian’, plus Hungarian, polish, American, Czech, Slovenian. I couldn’t tell a difference between any country from those. The only difference is actual hair colour, eye etc the same as a class full of ‘English’ children.

No. Of course not.

Me and my brother are both half irish and half english.

We have black hair and dark features.

My mother was fully irish. She has very veey black hair and dark features. All of her ancestors as far back as she can check were irish on both sides

They’d have a fit. Do me a favour 🙄

Dude come on. That is a completely ridiculous statement. Give yourself a shake.

frockandcrocs · 22/12/2024 17:04

I'm half German, so... I guess that's why? 😆

TeamPolin · 22/12/2024 17:05

All the Germans I know look waaay healthier than the average Brit on the street....

Some people of all nationalities/ethnicities will look like people of other nationalities/ethnicities, but I wouldn't say I've seen a particular English - German similarity!

But other nationalities often have completely inaccurate ideas about what ‘people from X country’ actually look like. I’m Irish. All my ancestors are Irish. I went to an international conference which had a high proportion of Americans and Irish-Americans, with an English friend with black hair and blue eyes and no Irish ancestry whatsoever. All the Americans cooed over her ‘classic Irish looks’. To her bafflement.

A family member in Ireland who works in professional sport ended up having to explain numerous times to a visiting South African team that yes, the black guy on the Irish team was Irish, not African. Senegalese parents, yes, but Irish-born and raised and an Irish national. Apparently they didn’t get it despite repeated explanations until they got talking to him.

People are going to have to update their ideas of what ‘Irish-looking’ looks like.

Radishknot · 22/12/2024 12:50

Facially maybe but German women are taller.

Dutch women are taller than German women on average (same applies for men).

BobbyBiscuits · 22/12/2024 17:19

They don't. But English is a Germanic language so I guess a lot of our ancestors might be German?
But British people and Germans to me look pretty different. I guess maybe lighter brown hair and blue/green eyes might be common traits but nothing else really.

ueberlin2030 · 22/12/2024 17:20

Radishknot · 22/12/2024 12:57

The Royal family look quite German don’t they?😆

Surprising eh?

Everyone is a mixture these days.

We all move around. Our parents moved around

This amuses me, so many have quite a bit of diversity in their backgrounds (whether known or unknown). My family on the other hand. One side is all from the same smallish area of the midlands, the other side is all from the same smallish area of the Scottish highlands (albeit they moved in the early 1930s to another smaller area of the highlands and my grandparents generation had already been born), this all back as far as you can go (my grandad traced his side back to the 1400s or something, pre internet, he found everyone lived within the same about 50 mile radius). And everyone married within the area, bar my mum and dad, thank you parents for branching out, I guess 🤣🤣
