I posted something I’d made on the local Facebook page and got a number of likes. I posted something else I’d made it was removed by an admin along with the picture I’d posted originally that got likes and I’d been given a warning. I left a comment and an admin said it had been marked as spam?
I thought it was a general page and there didn’t seem to be any rules against it. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong and don’t know why I feel ashamed

Is it a local "What's On" type of group? Some don't allow any selling or only allow it on certain days.

Most local FB pages are about the local area.

It pisses a lot of people off when people start posting photos of their hobbies, pets, cars, kids etc.

The best local groups I'm in, don't allow this either.

Could you join a hobby or crafting group?

There's bound to be like minded people in them who'd really appreciate your photos.

If you go onto the group you should be able to see its rules, and you can scroll through to see what sort of stuff is allowed as well.

Local groups aren't typically for talking about individual hobbies, that's not what people are looking for. But there will be a group for whatever crafting you're into where people will be happy to see your work and you can see others'.

ABunchOfBadBitches · 21/12/2024 23:33

Have a look at the rules and see if it falls under their description of spam

catphone · 21/12/2024 23:35

Funnily enough I’ve seen the rules and there’s nothing against it

Edited

Our local FB doesn't allow selling/advertising things without permission as a general rule.
If you want to post something that you would sell (and let's be fair, why would someone showcase something to a local group unless they were hoping it would result in sales, otherwise they'd just post it on their own feed) then you contact the admin, they say yea/nay and if they have approved you get AA<number> to put at the start of your post to show it's been approved.

I think it works pretty well, and it stops the feed being jammed up with people advertising all the time. Instead we have the complaints about fireworks, worries about a white van, letters "to the person who..." and currently requests for streets with good Christmas lights which can be entertaining at times.

There's a few people with a good sense of humour who keep the page light normally, occasionally to the annoyance of others, which is very funny. The week of traffic cone photos after someone did a letter "to the person who stole my parking cone" were definitely kept the page going, especially as the original letter writer got more and more indignant.

catphone · 21/12/2024 23:42

I wasn’t showcasing to sell. I don’t want to sell anything and I have no intention of making anything to sell. But I can see why it might be interpreted that way

The admins for Facebook groups are always bonkers and power goes to their head. I honestly wouldn't give it a second thought.

What did you make?

It was just a painting as I got new watercolours and started again after years but it turned out ok

They also removed my post and gave me a warning when I tried to post a photo of the muffins I’d made
there was nothing in the rules against it.
maybe I’m just a bit thick

Can you imagine if everyone used their local Facebook page to post their hobbies....

Oopah · 21/12/2024 23:57

I think for most local groups it’s not quite the right place for muffins and paintings, just as if everyone was posting stuff like that local events and what not would be buried. You should join some hobby groups and post away!

Falafelolive · 21/12/2024 23:57

Just look for a different group which is more suited to the kinds of things you want to post. There are thousands of groups on Facebook

I agree with this post. Those Facebook groups are generally for local issues, concerns, and news. I think you should find a crafty group where this sort of posting is encouraged.

Tetchypants · 22/12/2024 00:02

Aren’t those sorts of things for your own personal page, so your friends and relatives can see what you’ve achieved? Most group posts should be relevant and useful to members of the group.

BadgerInDungarees · 22/12/2024 00:04

There are tons of groups on Facebook for watercolour painting, I'm in a few. There are also loads of baking groups. Stick to using groups for their purpose, local groups are usually for local events, discussions, news etc.

Not really
but it was a misjudgement cos all sorts of stuff gets posted
I realise my mistake now

HeddaGarbled · 22/12/2024 00:21

Yeah, I go on the local Facebook page to find out about local news and events not to look at the crafting activities of someone I don’t know. That’s for your personal page, not the local community group.

Sometimes, a photo of somewhere local or of a knitted postbox topper is mildly interesting but we don’t want the page cluttered up with personal stuff.

You were kindly indulged with your first post but then you pushed it too far by following up with the second.

I understand what you mean about feeling ashamed, I would too. But as an admin of a local site I can assure you that removing posts that don’t meet the guidelines isn’t done in an angry judgemental way but as a practical Measure to keep the group focused on its main aims. . Another time you could read the guidelines before posting or message Admin to check first.
