Random acts of kindness

Shopping in Aldi today. Guy in front of me was paying for a few things using an Aldi gift card - only when it was totalled up it was 89p over the amount of credit he had, so he offered to put it all back. Checkout operator told him not to worry, and then she paid the 89p for him, using her own debit card.

I thought that was lovely - and wondered how many times she was using her own money like that?

Why did she have her debit card with her on the shop floor?
Having worked retail previously I would have got either sacked or at least a huge bollocking as cash handling job you should not have either cash or cards about your person.

BIWI · 20/12/2024 18:33

JFC is that all you can think to say?!

... on a thread about kindness

OP posts:
Hskatkat · 20/12/2024 19:02

What was unkind about my comment?
Nothing.
Did I say you thread was pointless?
No.
Did I say it's only a random act of kindness if you post it on your socials?
No.
"JFC" yourself 😂🥱
Your man could have put back one item and not had to put back everything & more than once I've paid for other ppls shopping when their card hasn't worked etc I've never once felt the need to make a thread about it.

Devilsmommy · 20/12/2024 19:09

I always use the self service tills in my local Tesco and id scanned all the shopping in and didn't have enough for the price without my clubcard which all of a sudden went on strike and wouldn't work, on my phone as I don't have the actual card. The lady at the next till heard me complaining to my 2 year old 😅 and she swiped her card on it so I could afford the shopping. I don't care about losing the points and it was so bloody lovely of her to save me having to try and figure out what to put back. Makes me realise there really are still nice people in the world, you just don't see it often enough 😂

coldscottishmum · 20/12/2024 19:10

Ah that is so lovely. A couple of years ago I paid for a pack of nappies using Tesco club card points for someone whose card kept declining. (Turns out there was a block on the card from the bank) a few days later karma came back around and someone else in a totally different area paid for my McDonald’s coffee in the drive through as a random
act of kindness.

AgileGreenSeal · 20/12/2024 19:16

I love this.
Just love the kindness being expressed in such practical ways.
Beautiful.

Devilsmommy · 20/12/2024 19:16

@coldscottishmum you see, that's lovely 😊 and so glad karma came and got you a free coffee😁

‘Kind’ of her, yes, but terrible she had to tap for it 🫣. We always had a £2 float when I worked tills, so you could let the odd person off if they were missing 50p. It usually worked out anyway because a lot of people would tell you to keep small change so they didn’t have to carry it around.

I was in my local coffee shop recently and another regular customer was dropping off sweets and Rituals sets for the staff for Xmas. Thought that was lovely of her, but made me feel a bit bad!!! 🤣

Hskatkat · 21/12/2024 00:10

@BIWI

You seem rather cross about a factual comment. ( That others have agreed with.)

BIWI · 21/12/2024 00:12

I think you need to read the thread again @Hskatkat

I'm dismayed, rather than cross, that what was supposed to be a thread about recognising a RAOK has been dismissed by your rather bitter and cynical response(s).

So your man can't count, & someone on minimum wage paid for him?

Great story @BIWI

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/12/2024 00:14

When an HGV driver to our right on a roundabout ( so had right of way) held up the traffic behind him to let my Fathers' hearse go through/

It made me feel like my Dad's last journey mattered to this unknown man behind the wheel of a huge truck and made a painful day a tiny bit lighter .

If you think I'm trolling, which you suggest by using the words 'story', then report me to MNHQ.

I was recently out for a pub meal and it’s busy in the run up to Christmas isn’t it? 6 groups of people pushed in front of me at the bar to order. I was fuming. Not at the staff - they didn’t have a moment to look up. The 6th group I actually challenged and asked if they knew they had pushed in and it was rude. They apologised. Another customer came up to me and shoved a 50% off food voucher into my hand and said merry Christmas.

Made my day!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 21/12/2024 00:19

My kids went to the local shop to get icing sugar butter and sprinkles, they were hoping to make cookies. They couldn't find sprinkles anywhere so asked a member of staff, a young guy in his 20s. He checked in the back but they were all out. They were obviously disappointed so he had an idea and took a small salad box from the deli and filled it with sprinkles from the ice cream station and didn't charge them anything. He wished them luck with their baking. It was such a lovely generous thing to do and probably not allowed but it warmed my heart!

BIWI · 21/12/2024 00:19

Do you know what @Hskatkat - I started a thread about something that struck me today, that was about one person being kind to another. A simple act of kindness. I was really touched, such that I thought it would be worth posting about it. And all you have done is to shit all over it.

Why would you do that?

It says a lot more about you than me.

spuddy4 · 21/12/2024 00:19

@Hskatkat Aldi staff are not on minimum wage and what are they going to do with a debit card on checkouts? They can't authorise a refund without a supervisor so couldn't possibly put a refund onto their card, cash is a different matter though and is usually not allowed.

Hskatkat · 21/12/2024 00:22

@spuddy4 I said when I worked retail previously I would have been sacked or bollocked, I don't work retail now. I don't work or shop at Aldi so apologies for presuming minimum wage.

HaddyAbrams · 21/12/2024 00:41

The lady that served me in Tesco recently did the same, a £10ish shop. I can't even remember why I couldn't pay it myself, I think I'd forgotten my bank card and my phone was dead maybe? Anyway. Her and the man behind me in the queue argued about who would pay it. She won. I did check that she was allowed. She said she was.

fivebyfivebuffy · 21/12/2024 01:42

I always try and leave some sweets or chocolate on emergency service vehicles, and pay for the car behind me at Starbucks drive through
Only small things but they've been appreciated
