Why have I just cleaned the windows "for Christmas"?

I spent an hour of so this afternoon cleaning the downstairs windows, outside and inside. It was a lovely afternoon and a relaxing task but about mid-way through, I did find myself wondering why on earth I felt obliged to clean the windows ready for Christmas. Would I have been struck down by a thunderbolt if I didn't? Would we have been at risk of Santa not coming? Would the neighbours have tutted? I think my grandmother might have turned in her grave but she was so sanctimonious she's probably dizzy with the amount of turning she does on a daily basis!
Has anyone else done this task? Or is it just me?

Low sunshine in winter really shows up the dirt on windows, and it's satisfying to get them clear and sparkly again. Bonus, it doesn't need doing often.

@Doggymummar that’s what I need, decals so you can’t see I haven’t cleaned them!

In fact, cleaning can actually be relaxing. I do a big cleaning every weekend because the act of tidying up helps improve my mood. Of course, I also clean and decorate for Christmas.

I have a window cleaner for the outside but I do usually clean the inside of them this time of year because I have a couple of weeks off. I only clean the insides twice a year!

I cleaned the kitchen windows inside and out plus the patio doors before I put the tree up. Cleaned the oven. Not even cooking anything as we’re out Christmas Day

AuntieGrizelda · 20/12/2024 10:20

DH did ours on the outside as they looked like frosted glass after the Storm Darragh. They just look streaky now!!

I did the living room ones on the inside as I stick those self clinging snowflakes on the window and put fairy lights around as part of my winter wonderland display!

FedUpandDownAgain · 20/12/2024 10:25

If not now, when will you do it? It’s not a bad thing to have things nice for Christmas

Nannyfannybanny · 20/12/2024 10:35

I'm amazed by people saying they never clean their windows.perhaps they don't open their curtains like one friend or have nets like another so never see the glass. Our living room and bedroom face south, sun shining on the windows today, they look filthy after the recent rain. We put new curtains and Venetian blind up in our bedroom a couple of weeks ago, windows were cleaned then, now filthy again. The friends who don't bother, one is 13 years in, they are just green and black gunge now.

Mine don't seem to get dirty on the inside, no smoke or real fire, I don't live near a road. I literally clean them twice a year - can't see much of a difference when I do.

caringcarer · 20/12/2024 10:50

My Mum is sadly no longer living but she always did a big deep clean including windows and skirtings for Xmas and only once she'd finished could Dad put the lights and tree up. My DH cleaned the windows and he's cleaning carpets too. He does most cleaning and I do most cooking.

Iliketulips · 20/12/2024 10:57

I usually clean my windows and oven. Just don't feel like I've got the time or energy this year. I might take the windows on next week, we'll see. Impressed you can do them in an hour!

Time40 · 20/12/2024 11:18

It's just a useful marker, isn't it? If it doesn't get done now, when is it going to get done? I'm not sure if I'm going to have time (or will be able to be bothered) to do any Christmas cleaning ... I'd like to, though, in an ideal world. The post about descaling the kettle for Christmas made me smile - I had that exact thought yesterday.

MammaTo · 20/12/2024 11:37

Because I can hear my mother and grandmothers voice in my head saying “you must clean the windows for Christmas, you must forensically clean the house for Christmas”.

BigDahliaFan · 20/12/2024 11:40

because you've run out of Baileys?

user1471538283 · 20/12/2024 12:55

I don't do it for Christmas and at this rate I'll just be happy our lounge is finished but I do it for New Year along with a huge scrub of everything else. I do try to be on top of the laundry. There is always something to do though isn't there?

TeaAndStrumpets · 20/12/2024 13:23

Usually we have adult DD and her DH and DDog travel to stay with us for Christmas, so I get it clean and tidy before they arrive. This year they are staying close to home due to an imminent baby but I am still cleaning and tidying so maybe it's the time of year? It does feel nice to have a tidy house for a change!

Stressybetty · 20/12/2024 13:25

My mum used to do a big clean because we'd always have relatives over for Christmas Day. Also cleaning before the decorations went up because it's more difficult to clean properly round decorations. Think she'd take the decorations down before New Year and clean again because of the accumulated dust on them and to have it all ready for New Years.

HeyPrestoVinegar · 20/12/2024 13:32

Never cleaned mine in the 3 years I lived in this house.

Bowietips · 20/12/2024 13:35

I'm impressed OP!

Happy Christmas ⛄

longtompot · 20/12/2024 19:53

I will do mine this weekend, only the living room and the kitchen ones, as they have fairy lights around them and I want the light to be a bit more sparkly looking.
