Why have I just cleaned the windows "for Christmas"?

I spent an hour of so this afternoon cleaning the downstairs windows, outside and inside. It was a lovely afternoon and a relaxing task but about mid-way through, I did find myself wondering why on earth I felt obliged to clean the windows ready for Christmas. Would I have been struck down by a thunderbolt if I didn't? Would we have been at risk of Santa not coming? Would the neighbours have tutted? I think my grandmother might have turned in her grave but she was so sanctimonious she's probably dizzy with the amount of turning she does on a daily basis!
Has anyone else done this task? Or is it just me?

I'll be cleaning mine for new years so no judgment here

TepidBathofManagedDecline · 19/12/2024 16:47

I did mine, but only because I probably hadn't since last Christmas and I'd got a new gadget to do it with. I think it's the threat of visitors, expected and unexpected ones.

MaryJosephandCherylnotJesus · 19/12/2024 16:49

I'll be cleaning the oven 'for christmas'...we're not even at home for christmas 😂

BookGoblin · 19/12/2024 16:49

I've never cleaned mine.

magicalmrmistoffelees · 19/12/2024 16:50

The window cleaner does the outsides once a month so I don’t have to worry about that. I haven’t done the insides ‘for Christmas’ though 😬

slightlydistrac · 19/12/2024 16:53

@thehousewiththesagegreensofa If you have a spare hour or so, perhaps you'd like to pop over and do my skirting boards?
😂

Why do we do lots of things "for Christmas"?

Sometimes I think that Scrooge had a point, and that Christmas is vastly overrated. Bah humbug.

jollygreenpea · 19/12/2024 17:02

I've done mine, they were bad though. The bedroom ones were unbelievably filthy, but the curtains wont be open when the room is being used.

DatingDinosaur · 19/12/2024 17:08

Not the windows as the window cleaner does the outsides and I do the insides about once a month as part of my routines (cat snot removal Grin )

I did cut my grass this lunchtime because it was sunny and blustery. All because I wanted to put some new outside Christmas lights on my bushes Xmas Smile

and to make sure Rudolph has a clear space to land

ParadiseLaundry · 19/12/2024 17:28

Would we have been at risk of Santa not coming?

In a word, yes. Also a risk if you have any dirty washing in your washing basket when the clock strikes midnight on Christmas Eve. Better get back to work OP!

Fireworknight · 19/12/2024 17:32

I know exactly what you mean. I feel like I should be doing a deep clean ‘For Christmas’ but can’t be bothered. No visitors , just family. Why do we put ourselves through this pressure?

hexsnidgett · 19/12/2024 17:33

I am planning on descaling the kettle for Christmas Confused
No idea why it's important.
Also changing water filter.
Only grown up dc visiting and they won't notice or care.

kelsaycobbles · 19/12/2024 17:35

Because if I didn't do it at Christmas it wouldn't happen all year?

Anyways Santa likes clean houses

Fireworknight · 20/12/2024 08:51

The sun is shining in my front windows, and just noticed how dirty they look…

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 20/12/2024 08:54

We do things because they need to be done and Christmas is a useful marker.

I cleaned the oven and the downstairs windows. I think next oven clean will be this time next year.

What's the gadget? I am intrigued. Grin

theemmadilemma · 20/12/2024 09:10

I think you've reminded me I've not had mine done outside recently.

I had them done especially for mother's Christmas visit last year.

Not this year!

crumblingschools · 20/12/2024 09:15

Haven’t done mine, will wait to see how long it takes for MIL to comment whilst she is staying for Christmas. Have cleaned the skirting boards though!

A lot of our window panes need replacing so not high priority to be cleaned

IAmNeverThePerson · 20/12/2024 09:17

I will be cleaning mine for Christmas too

TwinkleLights24 · 20/12/2024 09:18

I’ll be doing mine this weekend too as part of my deep clean. I tend to do them once a week/fortnight anyway to be honest.

Yes, I think this too. We're supposed to do a deep clean 'for Christmas' but then another one in the new year to clean away Christmas and welcome the new year!

shortoedtreecreeper · 20/12/2024 09:31

You did something positive thing.Clean windows allow more light in! This is surely a good thing makes you feel better.I am cleaning my oven, then the windows!
Well done pat yourself on the back!

Same

And I'm home alone Grin

crumblingschools · 20/12/2024 09:38

Is it only women that do this?

Doggymummar · 20/12/2024 09:39

Window cleaner did ours last week. I did the insides before we put the decals on. Do you not decorate your windows for Christmas? It's my favourite bit. Neighbours can't see in for a month.
