I hope the verdict brings her some relief but she's the bravest woman I've ever heard of.

Sentences for some of the others disappointing. Between 3 and 15 years, with two suspended sentences.

Superworm24 · 19/12/2024 11:41

I am guessing the lighter sentences were due to a lack of evidence around the knowledge that these men had.

I fear this is only the tip of the iceberg. Isn't there a related case involving a rape and murder in the early 90s? And then there was the man who has been charged who learned how to do this to his own wife. I wonder if there were more?

Those were suspended on medical grounds, correct? They'll be locked up as soon as a suitable prison/hospital is found.

Portakalkedi · 19/12/2024 11:44

The excuses those scumbags came up with for what they did is mind-boggling. What pathetic excuses for human beings, and hard to believe any woman would stand by someone who did this. The sentences should have been much longer, and I don't understand why the big differences in length of sentence. They all did the same thing, so why not the same sentence?

Didn't know this. Let's hope so!

Yes, I understand there are precedents but this case has so many factors for which there are no precedent that the sentence could definitely have been longer.

I suspect the judges sentenced conservatively to try to avoid the risk of anyone appealing. To prosecute 50 men at once leaves a risk of the accusation that individual cases have not been examined in enough detail and the possibility of appeals runs the risk of dragging this poor women repeatedly through the courts. Whatever way you look at it she will sadly never receive the justice she deserves.

I find the idea that there were this many men willing to rape an unconcious woman on one website, within 50km of her home, absolutely terrifying.
What does this tell us about the people we see around us?
Gisele, you are an inspiration - a truly brave woman - and I salute you.

Oh god, now you put it like that - it’s terrifying!

People were found guilty of different crimes. Rape, aggravated rape, sexual assault, etc.

roobyred · 19/12/2024 11:51

I think the sentencing of the others is shockingly low. I'm interested to know what sentencing would be like in other countries. What would happen in the UK? Am certain this is a wider issue and probably happens everywhere. Im tired of hearing about "French society" like it couldn't happen anywhere else.

If DP hadn't filmed the attacks, none of the men would have been sent to prison because there would be no evidence. I hope the 20 other men who couldn't be found are identified. Whole thing makes me feel sick. It is utterly disgusting.

khaitai · 19/12/2024 11:53

We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to this incredible woman. I truly believe that cases like this are the inevitable consequence of a porn-soaked culture that normalises the extreme objectification and degradation of women. The lack of empathy shown by these men is horrifying but what's more horrifying is that men like this walk among us.

roobyred · 19/12/2024 11:57

Exactly @khaitai Who can you trust? Who can justify going onto a site called "without her knowledge". She was treated like a commodity. She was snoring in the videos! She must have been obviously drugged. They didn't care.

Lamelie · 19/12/2024 11:57

HorribleLhistoire · 19/12/2024 10:45

France is still a deeply Catholic country and divorce isn't really an option if you're RC. I still can't understand why you would stand by your husband when convicted or rape though even if faith was a factor.

It's really not. Until the 80's/ 90's maybe but the "stigma" is now not so different from the UK or States.

Honeycrisp · 19/12/2024 11:31

Isn't that the maximum he could get?

Great verdict anyway. Very pleased for Gisele and her kids, and as always in awe of her bravery.

I did not know that, apologies will do more research @Honeycrisp .

BBC NEWS is * LIVE * right now outside the court.

Gisèle Pelicot's strength and resilience throughout this whole trial is just unbelievable!

roobyred · 19/12/2024 11:59

Gisele is speaking now. What a brave brave woman. I am glad she knows the support she has.

Mix56 · 19/12/2024 12:03

On the French news it said that a number of men were given no prison sanction

This. You can't trust any man. They were all 'ordinary.' It's harrowing.

And these were men who actively sought this out. Imagine how many more would do it if they were presented with the opportunity and they knew no one could find out. I wonder how many women are out there who've been drugged by their partners and have no idea.

Planesmistakenforstars · 19/12/2024 12:28

said he didn’t know what to do once he realised she was unconscious

He didn't know what to do. Perhaps not rape her? It seems that too much to ask.

Boyce · 19/12/2024 12:29

This has been the most unsettling part for me. Before this case I would have assumed that I would know. I would have said there's no way this could happen to me for all that time and that there would be signs.

I remember reading on the BBC that one of the men said he couldn't be a rapist as if he was he wouldn't have chosen a 60yo woman to rape. I'm paraphrasing but this was the gist of it.

Of all the disgraceful, depraved and vile things I've read about this case, it was this affected me the most. What human being would say that? What type of monster thinks that's a reasonable argument? I despair.

France has a very dubious legal definition of rape (there is no mention around consent) so a little part of me was worried they'd get away with it.

PandoraSox · 19/12/2024 11:01

Jean-Pierre Marechal is the second man to receive a verdict – he is found guilty of attempted rape and aggravated rape of his wife, as well as drugging her.

The 63-year-old earlier admitted to following Dominique Pelicot’s lead, drugging his own wife for five years, raping her and inviting Dominique to rape her too.

He has since said that was he did to his wife was “atrocious” and admitted: “I was a rapist, but I’m not anymore.”

He got 12 years, his lawyer thinks he could be out in three.

Part of me feels it is a shame France got rid of the guillotine.

Edited

Agree, though I'm thinking of a different to usual body part the guillotine could be used on.

These men WILL reoffend in my opinion, once they're out. They're abhorrent and sentences far too light. Gisele has a life sentence.

She is a wonderful woman and I hope her bravery can be the catalyst for change in law and society.

Can the prosecution appeal the leniency of he sentences?

roobyred · 19/12/2024 12:41

I hope she can now be left alone to get on with her life. May she find peace. Merci Gisele.

HashTagLil · 19/12/2024 12:43

The BBC said earlier (on their live feed) that they were given lighter sentences so that they had less chance of appealing. The judge doesn’t want Gisèle et al. To have to go through another trial.
