Help me find this book, I beg you!

I've been searching for this book for years. I'm in publishing and I still can't bloody find it; spent years in English Departments in universities - still nothing!

I read it when I was about 14. It was about a woman named possibly Angharad who was on a journey through some very dark, winding woods with a man (a Knight?), and I think he was protecting her but they bickered a lot...I think. They ended up falling in love from what I remember. It was a fantasy type, medieval I think. It most definitely was not YA, so adult fiction and not for kids.

Cover was a John William Waterhouse style painting of a woman with (I think) red or dark blonde hair, and possibly a Knight, surrounded by gnarly trees. I'm thinking it may have been written in the 90s, but honestly can't tell you. Not sure if the author was male or female.

Am I imagining this book?! 😂 I loved it as a kid but the library refurbished. I went back and...poof! Gone! Any help and I will drink a glass of prosecco in your name. 😁 I'd love to find it before Christmas and have a nostalgic read during the week!

The Worthy Soldier by Sarah Woodbury?

Telescopichair · 18/12/2024 19:04

The Blue Sword?

GiddyRobin · 18/12/2024 19:10

Unfortunately neither of these, BUT they both look good so I'm adding them to my festive reading list anyway! Thank you!

I've even tried asking chatgpt.com but that can't find it either! 😂 If I remember, it had a dark sort of feel to it. Not necessarily gothic, but kind of...Rohan in LotR if it was darker. And in a forest. 😂 I think there might have been some magic? Eerie in a way.

It wasn’t one of the Stephen King fantasy novels was it. he did a series, very good if you haven’t read them OP.

Jorvik1978 · 18/12/2024 19:17

Not one of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series?

Chatgpt suggests faery in shadow by cj cherryh.

With the caveat it almost certainly is not one of these, I will mention just in case The Empire Trilogy by Raymond E Feist.

merrymelodies · 18/12/2024 19:31

It might be The Mistletoe and the Sword by Anya Seton.

@Yuckitshristnsns - I just clicked on that link and although I don't like YA fiction that sounds great. How sad that the author struggled to get a publisher in 1980s and it was named one of the top 100 best fantasy books in 2020!

Have you read Alanna: The First Adventure ? Is it worth reading?

shellyleppard · 18/12/2024 19:34

@Middlemarch123 are you thinking of the dark tower series???

Middlemarch123 · 18/12/2024 19:41

Yes, that’s the series @shellyleppard .

GiddyRobin · 18/12/2024 19:42

It was none of these, BUT I've literally just added everything available to my basket. 😂 it's going to be a very bookish Christmas this year!

MN is being an arse and not letting me tag anyone; it wasn't Stephen King, but which series do you mean? I just confess I've never read him (terrible as a horror lover, I know!), always intended to but never got around to it. I would love any recommendations!

Also, The Empire Trilogy looks very good indeed! I don't even need Christmas presents now. You're all spoiling me so I can spoil myself!

Sign up to the BookSleuth boards at abebooks (UK site not US) and ask on there. Give details in the subject line instead of saying ‘can’t find book’. They will find it for you on there.

GiddyRobin · 18/12/2024 19:43

Ah! The Dark Tower! I always remember that name as my Mum used to drink a wine of the same name! Will look it up!

Loved these so much. Highly recommend. They ran parallel to The Magician etc. (Riftwar Saga) but had such a strong female lead.

TabloidFootprints · 18/12/2024 19:51

Sounds like a retelling of the story of Sir Gareth and Lynette, Angharad was another Arthurian lady.

Middlemarch123 · 18/12/2024 19:52

Op, if you love horror you must read Stephen King! The Stand is my fave, the early ones are all good. It, Salem’s Lot, Under the Dome. Am so jealous! I’ve read them all, some multiple times.

shellyleppard · 18/12/2024 19:53

@GiddyRobin the dark tower series by Stephen king ❤️ is quite an old series of his. Its based around the dark tower which is the centre of beams, each one represents a different universe. Roland of Gilead is the hero and he can "jump" between worlds. The drawing of the three is my absolute favourite book in the series. Its a bit complicated but worth the read. Enjoy!! Also may I recommend insomnia and bag of bones by him?? Not horror per se but very haunting stories

Yiayoula · 18/12/2024 19:53

Could it be a book from the Chronicles of Prydain series?
Set in medieval times , the hero Taran befriends an enchantress, Princess Eilonwy who has a mother named Angharad.
Cover pic of the 1980s edition attached.
