Help me find this book, I beg you!

I've been searching for this book for years. I'm in publishing and I still can't bloody find it; spent years in English Departments in universities - still nothing!

I read it when I was about 14. It was about a woman named possibly Angharad who was on a journey through some very dark, winding woods with a man (a Knight?), and I think he was protecting her but they bickered a lot...I think. They ended up falling in love from what I remember. It was a fantasy type, medieval I think. It most definitely was not YA, so adult fiction and not for kids.

Cover was a John William Waterhouse style painting of a woman with (I think) red or dark blonde hair, and possibly a Knight, surrounded by gnarly trees. I'm thinking it may have been written in the 90s, but honestly can't tell you. Not sure if the author was male or female.

Am I imagining this book?! 😂 I loved it as a kid but the library refurbished. I went back and...poof! Gone! Any help and I will drink a glass of prosecco in your name. 😁 I'd love to find it before Christmas and have a nostalgic read during the week!

@Wheresmytrainers
This is the kind of cover in my head, too. Not in the river but that sort of style - every time I see something remotely similar, I get excited. 😂 It was quite a dark cover if I remember correctly...but no luck on finding it yet. I'm starting to really hope I've not dreamed this up haha!

@ThisReplyHasBeenDeleted Oh, I got excited then! It's so reminiscent of the one I read! I don't think it is unfortunately, but really similar. I have vague memories of there being magical creatures in the woods that the main character could somehow interact with.

@GiddyRobin is it Peredur son of Efrawg

<sob> So so close, especially with the name...but sadly not. It did lead me on to Alan Garner's books, but unfortunately again it doesn't seem it.

I'm starting to wonder if this has been banned or out of publication! I can't imagine why, as it certainly wasn't offensive. 🤔 Maybe I'm missing something really obvious and particular. I'm certain her name is right, so I don't think it's that. Gah!

Lady of Hay? The book cover has changed now but when I read it it sounds similar to your description

That's what came to my mind. Dh and I read the whole series, though he remembers more than I do. A character called Nevin if I remember correctly?

Just thinking a bit more about this and I am mixing up two different authors. This is the series dh and I read

Oh wow, it's been years since I read this! Loved it - so easy to tuck into, what an absolute blast from the past! I need to see if I've still got them hanging about because if not I need to grab them. Thank you for the reminder!

I think it’s into the green by Charles de lint.
In the novel the main character is called angharad and has something in her blood which means she can talk to the animals and the wood.
She goes on a journey through the woods and people die including someone she lives. Later she meets a boy in the wood. Its got magic and fairies in it.

This is definitely the one I'm holding out the most hopes for. I can't wait to get my hands on it and see if it's the same - the cover might be different, but I'm sure there's been various others over the years. I was furious when I couldn't find it anywhere (libraries or bookshops!) right before Christmas. If it is, I am so buying a fancy pants bottle of fizz and binge-reading it!

@Yiayoula Omg you star! I've only just seen this notification and it is ordered! I'm back to the UK tomorrow night and it's quick delivery. 😍 I'm so excited to see if this is the one! @Violet80 I've am not remotely ashamed to say that I saw this and squealed like a child haha! I really do think this could be the one. I spoke to my brother on the phone last night and he said he remembers it being written by a man....so it could be!!

@Hogglehedge Oh don't worry! It's a brilliant series anyway and I'd recommend it to anyone! What I love about this thread is how so many amazing books have come out of it! Even if this book is lost to the sands of time, if other people (and me!) have found other great books from it then I'm happy! I've got into Stephen King because of it! Just finished Insomnia and it was incredible.

Hello, book sleuths!!

I am here to announce....

<Drum roll>

Into the Green IS the book I've been searching for!! You absolutely wonderful, wonderful women! 🌟 I cannot even begin to tell you how utterly delighted I am! I've got a bottle of fizz chilling in the fridge, DH is making me my favourite colcannon for dinner (Happy Nollaig na mBan!!), and I'm in absolute heaven!

I can't thank you all enough! I genuinely didn't think I'd ever find it again, but you've all absolutely outdone yourselves. On top of that, I also have some amazing new books to read, new authors to explore, and a TBR list that's going to get me from now until next Christmas!

This is why I love MN! THANK YOU! ❤️ I hope you're all having a lovely Monday. It's the Nollaig na mBan, so make sure to celebrate yourselves, too, for being the lovely women you are!

Wheeeeee, I'm so excited!!!

MariaMeringue · 06/02/2025 14:44

I've just popped back into this thread to see if you found 'the book'. I'm so pleased that you did, and also that I guessed it correctly 😁

GiddyRobin · 06/02/2025 15:14

I must have read it about six times since I found it!! You're all geniuses. I cannot believe the ones who were right - Sherlock Holmes would be retiring, my memories of it were so so vague!

I'm ordering another copy, and I shit you not I'm going to have it encased and hung up. I'll post pictures when it's done - it was such an important book to me when I was young, I can't believe we've been reunited! 😁

@GiddyRobin Would love to see the results once you’ve encased and hung up the book.
