What book did you buy your husband / partner for Xmas?

Looking for inspiration and like to add a book to Xmas gifts. What's popular this year?

OP posts:
Orangebadger · 18/12/2024 18:58

2 tops that he chose. An insulated mug for work, a le creuset mug ( he drinks a lot of tea!) Whiskey, socks and aftershave from the kids. Chocolates, a book ( he's not a great reader and prefers non fiction) so probably not a book to recommend.

Very boring really!

Sadik · 18/12/2024 19:01

A History of the World in 500 Maps recommended by a friend, plus Tir by Carwyn Graves (this one a bit niche unless your DH is Welsh Grin )

Sadik · 18/12/2024 19:03

Plus I'm planning to buy my dad the new Jonathan Coe novel (The Proof of my Innocence)

A biography of Ivor Cutler.

All that matters - Sir Chris Hoy. He loves cycling so hoping he will like this.

TianasBayou · 18/12/2024 21:23

Bradshaw's Handbook (the one that Michael Portillo uses on his train journeys) 🚂

YorkieTheRabbit · 18/12/2024 22:09

Have a look on the Christmas topic, there’s quite a few ideas on there Xmas Smile

Dontlletmedownbruce · 18/12/2024 22:21

A nutribullet that will just take up counter space and never be used!

Also a cotton jumper and some ski gear.

Incredibly boring

HippyChickMama · 18/12/2024 23:19

A peak bagging logbook for the county we live in. Not a very good suggestion unless your OH is also into hiking!

An experience together is nice. I took my best friend (I broke up with my partner last year so couldn't take them!) pottery painting for her birthday (I paid for the whole thing), and she loved it. We sat together, she painted a pot and I painted a plate. We had champagne and just a good chat. My friend and his boyfriend also went pottery painting together and painted a mug for each other, which I thought was really sweet. So you don't just have the experience together, but you have a souvenir of your partner's love for you.

I bought my husband (late 30s) -

  • a Hugo boss watch
  • a heated blanket
  • calvin klein boxers
  • a leather bracelet with 3 metal tokens (one for each of our DC)
  • bull dog wash kit

I want to get him a book or a wash bag as well

And your book recommendation?!?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/12/2024 12:15

DH is getting a couple of Natalie Haynes’ non-fiction books (he loves history and loves her podcast Natalie Haynes Stands Up For The Classics).

haje · 20/12/2024 12:17

A little niche perhaps (farmer). So bruised soul by the hoof GP

itsallbowlsbaby · 20/12/2024 12:17

This - www.counter-print.co.uk/products/1-000-marks-by-pentagram

Very niche I know but he's a designer and Pentagram is his favourite creative agency.

squashyhat · 20/12/2024 12:19

Agent Zigzag by Ben McIntyre

Hahaha good point! Got so carried away looking at present suggestions I forgot this was about a book. My favourite book to gift is Lionel Shriver’s ‘We Need to Talk about Kevin’. A real think-piece of a book and often leads to fun conversations and debates together (is Kevin inherently evil? Is Eva a reliable narrator?)

Beamur · 20/12/2024 12:24

Books I've given as gifts this year:
The 12 murders if Christmas
The wood at midwinter
Bored gay werewolf

Proteinbananas · 20/12/2024 12:33

You're the Captain by Flightradar

Scentedjasmin · 20/12/2024 12:53

'Butter' is The Sunday Times bestseller and gets good reviews.

JingleThoseBells · 20/12/2024 12:55

We don't buy gifts anymore as its just more random clutter. Instead, we use the money we would usually spend and create a memory, so we have a day out or night away/nice meal over the festive period. This year we are going to Chester 😊

AllThePotatoesAreSingingJingleBells · 20/12/2024 12:57

First Blood by David Morrell.

its the novel Rambo is based on.

Lobstercrisps · 20/12/2024 13:00

Dear Posters. The OP wants BOOK recommendations, not to hear about the mini break you are having or the top you are buying DH.

I haven't yet chosen a book for him as he has a stack of business type books to read.

But recently I've enjoyed:

The new Henry Porter which is a standalone novel.
Jonathan Coe's new novel as per PP above.

Eyresandgraces · 20/12/2024 13:02

Politics on the Edge - Rory Stewart

For dil Gavin & Stacey Quiz Book.

MissMarplesNiece · 20/12/2024 13:03

I've never known my DH finish a book, fiction or non-fiction. In his family there is no culture of reading, which is very sad imo. I can't imagine life without a good book.
