Children: ‘No Christmas, Please!’ YAY!

So, my teenagers confirmed last night they don’t want to do Christmas! They just want to spend the day with family, relaxing, eating good food, playing with the dog and watching old films - no roast, no presents, no forced interactions with family they don’t like.

Not sure whether to laugh, because honestly just eating nibbles, fruit and salads all day whilst we watch Star Wars and DH loses so badly at scrabble he tosses the tiles across the table again sounds amazing, or to cry tears of joy because they actually agreed on something together (honestly, it’s the first time I can remember them ever agreeing)

Not even anything to really comment on here. I just wanted to post and say how happy I am that we all get a day off and can actually just relax without any pressure! Obviously did not say this to them, just nodded and said ‘oh that sounds lovely’ but I am so pleased!

the irony is… i would wager my posts will be deleted. Just for stopping people wasting their time on a nonsense BS thread

I think you have lost a generation somewhere. My DD is 32 and my DM is mid 80's but they need me at age 62 to make this work. You cannot be 32 with a DM in her late 80s.

poppymango · 18/12/2024 08:45

Sounds lovely OP.

I love a roast and exchanging presents, but our Christmases are always very small anyway (max 4 people, very often just 2) so there's never much in the way of work or stress. I can imagine after years of dressing up for a 40 person shindig it would be a relief to do the opposite for a change!

Maybe in the future you could alternate between a small relaxed Christmas and the big family gathering?

Do your ternagers teally want no presents?

I bet they wouldn’t say no to cash instead!

Whoahnelly · 18/12/2024 08:46

Why make up such a dull story? At least make up an affair or something 😂

Erm, it’s called adoption?

RabbitsEatPancakes · 18/12/2024 08:48

Sounds like you're just crap at doing Christmas every other year if it's so awful that no one wants to do it.
How sad for your children.

This!

Motherlandatemyhomework · 18/12/2024 08:50

This whole thread is batshit crazy!

ApolloandDaphne · 18/12/2024 08:50

@EasyComfortDishes people don't adopt babies in their late 50's which is what OPs mother would have needed to be to make those ages work.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 18/12/2024 08:50

I find the obsession with the presents hilarious on here.

Honestly are teenagers really sitting around all year waiting to only get things 2 days a year...bday and xmas?

I don't celebrate Xmas and find it fascinating how so many people believe this means my children never get presents. Other family members ask what they can buy them in winters and it takes them a while to come up with something because the way it works for us...they see something they want...whatever month of the year it is, and I say...well I will get that for you when I get paid/when you achieve this result at school/when it's summer holidays or half term so you can play with it. It's really not unfathomable that teenagers will not be fussed about presents on threads 25th.

Anyway OP, I think the day you've planned sounds lovely, this is pretty much how we spend xmas period and it's very relaxing. Enjoy

Sorry, can you stop cluttering up the thread with facts when I’m trying to generate another plot twist.

Doggymummar · 18/12/2024 08:51

Sounds like a normal Christmas in our house and yes it's joyful, however I have been shopping and planned since October so it's way too late to make changes now. Your not really gaining anything except not enjoying the fruits of your labour. Id be furious personally.

FatAlec · 18/12/2024 08:51

And OP hosting both her mother and worryingly a MIL when she was 10 years old ... Precocious indeed.

Oh Op - are you very bored to make up this load of rubbish? Grin

Excuse me! I'll have you know that my 8 year old DS has shot, plucked, and prepared the goose every Christmas since he was 5! And you should see my 4 year old DD's table centrepiece! It's stuff of wonders. All I have to do is pop a bubbly and we're done. 😌😂

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 07:19

Oh please, we’ve all copped a strop when we lose at a board game. Tipping your tiles across a board is hardly abusive 😂DC don’t even know about the presents as they only appear under the tree on XMas Eve and until then stay at DMs house.

And salads do fill people up - not everyone has to eat huge meals all the time…

Well, no, no we haven’t. And if your DC are teens, of course they know about presents! Have you been going on and on about how stressful Christmas is and they’re willing to forgo gifts if it’ll mean you stop stropping?

ShanaShaShanaSha · 18/12/2024 08:55

Christ alive, what a bunch of sour faced fun sponges on this thread!

OP, your christmas sounds awesome and seems to be what everyone in your household wants - go forth and be happy (salads and all)!

Not sure it's being a "fun sponge" to point out the obvious bollocks in the OP 🙊

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 18/12/2024 08:56

I always thought it was traditional to NOT do what you want at Christmas, but rather be a martyr to the cause, except if very young or very old. So this is certainly a novel idea.

This is definitely a case where you should read all of the thread, particularly the later contributions, before starting to hector and chastise other posters.

ColourBlueColourPurple · 18/12/2024 08:58

Why ate there so many people being so negative snd picky towards the OP on this thread? There's a lot of unhappy people out there clearly.

It sounds like it's going to be a lovely chilled Christmas OP, certainly more enjoyable than the the big 40+ people do that you usually go to. Enjoy!
