Children: ‘No Christmas, Please!’ YAY!

So, my teenagers confirmed last night they don’t want to do Christmas! They just want to spend the day with family, relaxing, eating good food, playing with the dog and watching old films - no roast, no presents, no forced interactions with family they don’t like.

Not sure whether to laugh, because honestly just eating nibbles, fruit and salads all day whilst we watch Star Wars and DH loses so badly at scrabble he tosses the tiles across the table again sounds amazing, or to cry tears of joy because they actually agreed on something together (honestly, it’s the first time I can remember them ever agreeing)

Not even anything to really comment on here. I just wanted to post and say how happy I am that we all get a day off and can actually just relax without any pressure! Obviously did not say this to them, just nodded and said ‘oh that sounds lovely’ but I am so pleased!

30 year olds adopting multiple teenagers

interesting

Two teenagers. Yes. I’m 31.

They are the result of a ‘foreign adoption’ from DH birth country. I can’t have children. Not that this is anything to do with the thread…

let me get this straight

you’re 30

and you have adopted multiple teenagers?

And been hosting widowed mother and mil for 20+ years.

notedbiscuits · 18/12/2024 08:19

You could save any presents bought for their birthdays

Good on your DC.

Some people go OTT with present buying. Overheard a colleague a few years ago asking what to buy for her sister's fiancé's BIL. I said to her nothing as you are not related to him.

So your 30 but your mother and mother in law are both in their late 80s?

teatoast8 · 18/12/2024 08:19

Food wise. That certainly wouldn't fill me up. Can't wait for Christmas Dinner 😋

Quirrelsotherface · 18/12/2024 08:19

I get not going to the party and just being with your immediate family but no presents and just healthy food..bit odd imo

And with her own mother in her 80s?

Zippidydoodah · 18/12/2024 08:20

I think it sounds lovely, and I’m surprised at all the negative comments!

I would probably make plans to pick up the gifts, though.

Enjoy! 🥂

Popcorn63 · 18/12/2024 08:20

Have a lovely day 🙂
And as for the nasty comments- Christ on a bike!!!! Get over yourselves 😆😆

how long have you been these teenagers adopted parents?

Lovemusic82 · 18/12/2024 08:20

This is pretty much our Christmas every year. We do presents but we don’t visit family or make a fuss about cooking a big dinner.
Both my teens are autistic and we decided years ago that we would make Christmas autism friendly by making it low key and not visiting relatives (forcing socialisation), we love it this way and I’m sure lots of people now do the same.

I'm in my 30's with in laws this age. My friends dad just turned 90 and he's 35! It's usual but not totally unheard of.

Imissmypuppy · 18/12/2024 08:21

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 08:14

It’s called adoption. Perhaps you have heard of it?

You’ve hosted your mil and mum for 20 years…since you were 10 years old. Now that is unusual.

this op

aged 30
adopted two teenagers
hosting christmas for more than 2 decades

i think the Op would be better off starting a thread for mental health support

Not many women have children in their late 50s, though, which is what the OP is saying. And that she’s been hosting her mother and in laws for Christmas since she was 10.

MyGladBiscuit · 18/12/2024 08:22

it’s fascinating to watch an Op unravel

biscuitsandbooks · 18/12/2024 08:22

None of this makes any sense.

You're 31 with multiple adopted teens.
You've apparently been hosting your mum and MIL for 20+ years (so since you were 10?)
And apparently your mum and MIL are in their late eighties? So had you in their late fifties?

Okay Confused

biscuitsandbooks · 18/12/2024 08:23

@Alwaysyoudoyou but OP is claiming her mum had her in her late fifties.

KneesUnder · 18/12/2024 08:23

Sounds like a lovely Christmas.

Differentstarts · 18/12/2024 08:23

They just want to stay home, give them their presents and make something nicer then a salad. It doesn't have to be a roast but at least put some pizzas in the oven

ILoveAnnaQuay · 18/12/2024 08:23

I think that sounds great. My idea of a good Christmas would be very similar although without Star Wars.

MrsMitford3 · 18/12/2024 08:23

I was coming on to say the same.

Why would you bother?

GiddyRobin · 18/12/2024 08:24

Absolutely none of this time line makes sense. How was a 10 year old hosting Christmas?!

Inmydreams88 · 18/12/2024 08:25

Of course not totally unheard of for the father but the mother, having children in late 50's is quite rare surely. So the OP's mother had her in her late 50's, but also her husbands mother had him also in her late 50's? Not likely.
