Would you consider a Florida holiday next summer?

Given the political situation that incoming President might create, would this make you reconsider a family holiday to Florida next summer?

It’s made me cancel all plans to go to the USA in the next four years and my only (adult) child lives there.

Sortumn · 17/12/2024 19:47

I love Florida. I would go sorting out autumn though.

I’m just back from two weeks travelling around Florida. Didn’t feel unsafe anywhere. Didn’t see a gun or a Trump poster. Spoke to a lot of Americans who all had different opinions but expressed them politely and sensibly. Don’t believe the hype.

He’s not President until 20th January 2025. Where my daughter lives, anyone without a previous felony can openly carry a gun and that will probably change to anyone can openly carry a gun.

seenabeena · 17/12/2024 19:58

We did West Coast to East Coast this summer, it got up to 48c in Phoenix, absolutely loved it; very expensive nowadays though.

ForGreyKoala · 17/12/2024 20:15

If you want to go, then go. I would. Honestly, what difference do you think it will make?

roses2 · 17/12/2024 20:26

I wouldn't go but only because Epic Universe is opening and it's going to be rammed!

If you so go I highly recommend Sheraton Villas Lake Buena Vista - one of the best hotel villas I've stayed in!

You can't be serious? You'd pick political morals over seeing your child?

mindutopia · 17/12/2024 20:34

Nope. I have family in Florida and have spent a good bit of time there growing up and as an adult. You couldn’t pay me to take a holiday there.

I’m serious. My child can come here. There are flights from the US to the UK.

sonjadog · 17/12/2024 20:35

No, but nothing to do with politics. Far too hot and humid for me in summer.

Nice.

Saw the plans and model of Epic, looked amazing - tbf Universal is so much better than Disney these days, My kids loved Volcano Bay

EconomyClassRockstar · 17/12/2024 20:39

Some of these replies are a little bit bonkers! You all know there are millions of people living in Florida perfectly happily, including half the Trump family, right? You'll be fine. Hot, but fine.

Username917778 · 17/12/2024 20:39

We go to Florida every year (granted not in summer because I'd melt) and we aren't going next year. I felt uncomfortable this year with the amount of trump flags, stickers and full on Trump outfits worn by children. And this was the Disney area! We will see next year about 2026 and how it's looking.

It’s not nice at all, I’m alone at Christmas and it’s upsetting. I’m not coping very well. Thanks for your concern.

Well that's a choice you've made, I don't feel sorry for you. It's not Syria, you could go, you've chosen not to.

Correct. Thanks for making me feel worse. I’m not going to the USA with him in power, that’s where the story ends.

grapeshpp · 17/12/2024 20:47

We visit Florida every year, at Easter or December, never summer as it's too hot. The political situation has no impact on our visit.

TooManyBloodyMarys · 17/12/2024 20:49

No. If I was looking for sunshine there will be plenty closer to home during the summer.

I hope your moral conviction keeps you company this Christmas.

Classic cutting off your nose to spite your face, what a shame.

Fargo79 · 17/12/2024 20:56

We will avoid the US for the foreseeable for several reasons. The risk of gun violence. The risk of needing reproductive healthcare that may not be accessible. Also because I try and spend my money ethically as far as I can (don't buy Chinese tat if I can possibly help it, don't buy stuff made in sweat shops, don't shop at Amazon etc) and spending £1000s in the USA under a Trump government feels unethical to me.

strawberry2017 · 17/12/2024 20:57

Go In May, much nicer time to visit

BruceAndNosh · 17/12/2024 20:58

Florida is unbearable in the summer.
And if I were still of childbearing age, I wouldn't consider it in the winter or spring either

  1. I can’t afford a flight over Christmas
  2. I have cancer and can’t afford the insurance either
  3. My mobility is limited I.e., I can hardly walk
  4. I haven’t asked for your opinion, simply thanked you for your concern
  5. It’s going to be my last Christmas so I’m not feeling particularly festive
