People coming into work sick

WHY? WHYYYY?!

Just a moan. Turn up this morning and the girl who's been on holiday for the last week is coughing and sneezing all over us all. It's 9 days until Christmas you utter idiot, why risk making us all sick?

(We all get paid sick pay, so she could have stayed off)

Lol so at your place of work you can stay off for every cough, sneeze or headache and never get interviewed by management about it?

Nah.

A headache alone isn't contagious.

Stillherestillpraying · 16/12/2024 18:24

TiredArse · 16/12/2024 17:23

Because in most places you can only have so many days off before it goes to a warning?

This. And you actually have to be sick as in unable to work to qualify. Your colleague may look awful but she can do her job. A sickness big is something else

SometimesCalmPerson · 16/12/2024 18:24

If she felt well enough to do her job then she probably would have felt like she was doing the wrong thing by taking a day off straight after a holiday. I would in my job.

WillowTit · 16/12/2024 18:25

people cant win

too much and you are out

We don't get punished for sick leave in our company.

My firm sent a note round, to be conveyed at staff meetings, suggesting we not come in if infectious with cold or flu.

I had to point out that our written conditions of employment say something very different.

Balletdreamer · 16/12/2024 18:28

Same here. Fine if you aren’t allowed to work from home, but we can all work from home. Just fucking do that, I have no interest in being around others coughing and snot when it can easily be avoided. It’s bad enough the coughers and sneezers on public transport. One woman actually told me she’d come in despite being sick because she was bored at home. Thanks (!)

Nah.

Obviously it's within reason but when you're coughing and sneezing on everyone a week before Christmas you should be in 🥴

StormingNorman · 16/12/2024 18:29

This is a no win scenario. You go to work sneezing and people complain about spreading germs. You stay home and people complain you’re workshy and there’s nothing really wrong with you. 🤷‍♀️

TooManyBloodyMarys · 16/12/2024 18:32

Because for every person saying "she shouldn't be here" there's someone else saying "why is she skiving off just before Christmas when she's only got a cold". People can't win.

Take your vitamins and hope for the best.

Allnewtometoo · 16/12/2024 18:32

@TheGrinchIsComingToTown I work for a local authority. I took 3 seperate days off in a 6 month period. In fact, one of them was a half day when it was strongly suggested I go home. This was enough to trigger a sickness absence review. They want a Drs note for any future sickness. So yeah, i go in.

A couple of years ago I had covid (not allowed in) surgery (essential) and norovirus. Same things again then.

Prior 20 years of no issues at all

We don't get punished for sick leave in our company.

I don't believe you.

There must come a point where the company can't afford to fund people who are constantly off sick with one thing or another.

They just wouldn't be able to stay afloat.

Then surely this person's colleagues need to tell her to stop coughing and sneezing on other people?

Most 6 year olds have mastered the art of covering their mouths, or sneezing into the crook of their elbow.

It should be no problem for an adult.

Onetimeonly2024 · 16/12/2024 18:45

I am an employer (private sector) We have a very generous sick leave policy, pretty much everyone gets paid, no matter what. I HATE it when people come in sick and I will always send them home. Piss takers are easily spotted and don’t last long.
If you are poorly, stay at home. And if your employer is shit about it, find a new one. We do exist.

Heatherjayne1972 · 16/12/2024 18:46

ha ha If only I could stay off- that would be lovely
People wait three to six months to see me - if I cancel a day patients complain at the inconvenience and reception complain as they have to rebook and find new appointments in a busy diary . The boss complains as he looses money
So unless I’m vomiting or physically unable to go I’m expected to pop the tablets and carry on
yes I work with the public
yes some of my patients and Colleagues are old or vulnerable or both

but the expectation is to go in anyway

PlantDoctor · 16/12/2024 18:49

I WFH but I definitely wouldn't be in with this cough. It's been going on for a week and a half already! I feel bad enough coughing on the school run and I can avoid people there!

user1471538283 · 16/12/2024 18:52

There is something doing the rounds and I'm sure I picked it up at work. I used to work with a young woman who would drag herself in clearly unwell and then we would all get it. If you are unwell but okay to work we WFH. But some people want to go in ...

Skyellaskerry · 16/12/2024 18:56

Sorry if I missed it @TheGrinchIsComingToTown but COULD your colleague do her work from home?

fivebyfivebuffy · 16/12/2024 19:03

We can WFH, and are told to if full of a cold, cough, sneezing, snotty, under the weather with anything. Covid included
Managers don't want people coming in and spreading it especially to more vulnerable staff

@TheGrinchIsComingToTown i worked in the nhs and they had a traffic light system for sick leave , if you took time off for things like coughs and colds you ended up triggering sickness absence policies really quickly…for eg. .it would be better to have one lot of 3 months off sick rather than 3 lots of 2 days in 6 mths. If the nhs won’t tolerate people taking sick leave even knowing we make our patients ill when we come in then you can hardly expect private companies to always be sensible.

Jabbabong · 16/12/2024 19:13

If it's a common cold then you are overreacting.

If they have just got over a severe flu bout then yes they need to be off work.

Our company doesn't have this policy.

My company also doesn't punish for sick leave. In fact, I've never worked anywhere that does - I didn't even know it happened until I read about it online.

The company doesn't need to worry, as no one takes the piss. Perhaps that's how it works when people are treated with trust instead of like naughty school kids playing truant.

More companies clearly need to trust their employees more.
