A&E? - Unwell child

I come here because my DH and I don't seem to agree and he knew something I didn't tell the GP, so I don't know if it changed much.

I had the flu. Our 5yo caught it and has been having high fevers since Friday.
The fever has stopped (or so it seems).

On Saturday he had a pepperami, a mini muffin and some grapes. He also had some milk and juice. Poorly but normal. He also had a loose poo.

He vomited yesterday morning, and since then he has been able to hold anything to drink. He did eat 2 strawberries.

This morning he's already vomited like 3/4 times and has been able to hold any fluids. Obviously no food and has been asleep the whole time.

Now, I told the GP he hadn't had a wee since Saturday, but apparently he had one yesterday and I forgot to mention the strawberries.

He does seem to get more lethargic as time goes by.

I would take him to A&E ASAP, whereas my DH is if the idea to see if he drinks anything during the day, then we're fine. Otherwise we'd need to take him in the evening.

Getting fluid into him is very important
Ice lollies, sips of water or juice
If he’s still unable to tolerate that, then I’d be seeking urgent medical care

standardduck · 16/12/2024 12:01

I'd take him in x

dairyfairy21 · 16/12/2024 12:02

The fevers show your 5yo was definitely fighting something.

I would perhaps go to A&E just incase they need a little more help getting over it if your 5yo still has symptoms.

I had to do this with my daughter - she ended up staying in for a week until her infection / virus was gone.

Do you mean unable to hold fluid when you say "able to"?

HousedInMySoul · 16/12/2024 12:02

If he hasn't passed urine since yesterday and is lethargic, you need to take him to A&E immediately

Yes, I saw the terrible typos, I'll edit!

What did the GP say when you said he hadn't had a wee since Saturday? Assume this was this morning? Also assume you mean he HASNT been able to have any fluids, only twice you said he has so it's unclear - and a pretty important thing to clarify!

summerlovingvibes · 16/12/2024 12:04

Then in that case yes I would take him in.
Adults I would say take some loperamide and rehydration salts but for a little one I would take in x

HousedInMySoul · 16/12/2024 12:05

Don't worry about wasting their time etc, staff would rather check him out and him be OK, than you not take him and it be sepsis

So the GP was very worried about the NO wees, but that was my mistake as apparently he did have a couple yesterday.

And yes, I meant he hasn't been able to have anything to drink for at least 36 hours now

Not being able to hold fluids in is quite worrying. I think I would take him in.

Tiswa · 16/12/2024 12:07

Pedantry has a time and a place and when you are dealing with an unwell child arguing over how many wees he has done when he sounds dehydrated is not it

take him in now

Yes, exactly!
Better to take him and it not be anything too serious, than not take him and something terrible happens.

HPandthelastwish · 16/12/2024 12:13

I would leave it till this afternoon.

In the meantime I'd be giving him ice lollies to suck on and jellys, and high moisture fruit. Little and often and even if he brings some up the rest will be in his system.

Shop brought are fine but you can make your own. And then see if he pees and what colour it is after that. The advice now isn't to starve a stomach bug but to keep eating.

If you are breastfeeding any siblings then I'd consider expressing him that too as it is easier for the digestive system to absorb.

Depending on the colour of his urine by this afternoon I'd then take him into A&E or get an emergency GP appointment really he just sounds like he is fighting a bug and as the fever has stopped is coming out the other side

BeyondMyWits · 16/12/2024 12:15

Ice pops are a godsend for fluids.

When you look... get him to stick his tongue out ... is his mouth dry?
If yes, then would take him in straight away.

Ice pops and the tiniest of sips of water. NO DAIRY. Don't think of it as "having a drink". Holding water/Ice pop in his mouth will help too.

If you doubt he's absorbing any fluid, take him in.

HousedInMySoul · 16/12/2024 12:15

No/low urine output is potentially a sign of sepsis, take him now

Hunkydory99 · 16/12/2024 12:25

Assuming they’re awake, conscious and not really lethargic for the next hour I’d make it my mission to get some fluids in, ice lollies, small sip of drink water or squash every 5 mins. If none of it goes in or stays down I’d be going to A&E

slightlydistrac · 16/12/2024 12:26

Dehydration is a funny thing, you stop feeling thirsty; and constantly heaving every time your ds tries will put him off trying altogether.

You do need medical advice asap.

Jeregrettetous · 16/12/2024 12:28

Take him. They may just monitor but they’ll
want to see him. In the meantime if you have any rehydration salts (diaralyte or the like) try syringing 5ml into him every few minutes using calpol syringe.

He needs to be seen if he hasn’t drunk for that long. Did the GP tell you to go to A&E? They will not be happy if you don’t follow that instruction.

Usedphone · 16/12/2024 12:30

So a bit of an update. He still can't hold any fluids.

He's fever is back (40+), he immediately threw up the paracetamol, and he also vomited blood (diluted but still).

He had a wee though.

Off to A&E

Oh no, your poor DC!

Good luck and hope he feels better soon.

HousedInMySoul · 16/12/2024 12:36

Glad you're taking him op! X

HomeAgainPlease · 16/12/2024 12:39

I hope he’s on the mend really soon & that you’re seen quickly.

Elphamouche · 16/12/2024 12:58

I hope he’s okay, I’m glad you’re going to A&E.
