Christmas present for travelling 10 year old

Goldibollocks · 15/12/2024 14:21

My cousin and her family are coming to stay for a couple of days over Christmas and I'm struggling to think of a gift for their 10 year old daughter. They live overseas and will also be visiting friends in other cities around the Uk before they head back home, so I can't buy her anything bulky. We've never met her before but she's excited about meeting her (second) cousins.

I really have no idea what 10 year olds like; would a jumper and a picture of my newborn and toddler be a terrible idea? I mean I would have hated clothes as a 10 year old but they seem a lot more fashion conscious these days.

Please can I have some ideas. TIA

Something consumable like a nice bag full of sweets you can't get where she lives?

Sorry - didn't intend to quote and now can't remove it...

MiddleAgedDread · 15/12/2024 14:26

I wouldn’t give a 10yr old a photo of very distant relatives. Where do they live? Chocolate or sweets that are very UK would be a safe option.

In the nicest possible way, probably not the photo. I would get her some fashion jewellery like elasticated bracelets from Etsy or something.

MassiveSalad22 · 15/12/2024 14:28

Photo would be off the mark IMO.

An item of clothing she can wear during her trip would be good.

Money, book, sweets from the UK… in fact all of the above would be epic and not annoying for travel.

rainbowunicorn · 15/12/2024 14:29

I wouldn't be giving g a photo of your baby, no. Maybe just some sweets that she can't get in her country and some nice bits from somewhere like Claires accessories. Easy to travel with and the sweets would probably be eaten before she left yours.

Onlyvisiting · 15/12/2024 14:30

I wouldn't buy clothes unless under strict instruction from a parent, they are more fashion conscious which means whatever you buy will probably be wrong 😅
Agree with a pp to ask parents for st least an idea, at 10 in could be dolls and lego or make up and everything techy so who knows!
What about some kind of crafting kit, make your own something. With the intention that you might do it in your house or to occupy her on one of the other visits. Not too bulky and doesn't have to be kept until they go home, some simple entertainment while she's here.
Or if she's into crafty arty stuff then craft supplies in general.

TwirlyPineapple · 15/12/2024 14:31

I don't think she'd particularly appreciate a picture of your kids, I'm not sure what a 10 year old would do with that given she's presumably not close to them.

Where do they live? I know NZ and Australia often have to pay really high prices on imported goods so things like clothes, toiletries and makeup (if her parents approve of course) etc could be a good idea. Or if she lives somewhere non-English speaking then books or magazines (I appreciated them when I lived abroad, as they were very expensive where I lived).

I agree with the poster recommending asking your cousin though, 10 year olds can be quite grown up or still super into toys and games.

MassiveSalad22 · 15/12/2024 14:32

I just know craft stuff would be a pain for my 10 year old - either wanting to open it and get little bits and beads etc all over (someone else’s) house, and then having to travel home with open pack of craft stuff

OR

badgering me to let them do the above and I’d have to keep going agh no, wait till we get home

Onlyvisiting · 15/12/2024 14:32

Definitely not the photo, sorry.
And a 10 year old will nearly always be happy with a pile of sweets, provided her parents aren't avid no sugar people or something

Newuser75 · 15/12/2024 14:32

I'd also say gently no to the clothes or the photo.
Some sweets
Some nice stationary
A lip gloss
Money
Some bath stuff

Mynewnameis · 15/12/2024 14:33

That age group would like a white fox hoodie if you want clothes.

tangobravo · 15/12/2024 14:34

Tickets for an attraction while they're with you? Or if smaller budget, I'd also go for British themed consumables and/or something small to wear (bracelet)

Spaceid · 15/12/2024 14:35

Not clothes and a photo. You don’t know what she would like, what size she is, and what’s in fashion where she lives. I’ve no idea what a 10yr old would do with a photo!

Sweets, chocolate, etc sounds a great idea assuming no allergies.

lovelydayIhave · 15/12/2024 14:37

You can get her money, Robux card if she plays Roblox, some nice sweets...

Some of that age group would. Not all!

biscuitsandbooks · 15/12/2024 14:41

No 10 year old want's a photo of their cousins as a gift!

Why not ask her parents' what she'd like or what would be practical?

Stillherestillpraying · 15/12/2024 14:42

Clothes are personal choice and a picture of people she barely knows is a bad idea.
Can’t go wrong with sweets. Or a voucher for something to do while she is there (cinema, escape room, trampoline park)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/12/2024 14:44

Photo is a terrible idea and clothes too apt to be wrong.

Bug bar of Dairy Milk with twenty quid stuck to it for buying something nice on her travels.

Goldibollocks · 15/12/2024 14:45

Thanks everyone. I thought the photo was a cute idea 😂😂! We are their closest relatives by several thousand miles but will definitely forget that idea.

Will probably go down the sweets/chocolate idea

a distant 10 year old relative isn’t going to care much for a photo of your kids.

lots of little bits like sweets, note books and pens, little fidget spinner gadget toys, lip balms, body sprays hair bobbles.

you could easily spend just £20 getting these little bits and it would be a joy for her to open and look through.

Whatwouldnanado · 15/12/2024 14:50

Yes forget the photo for the child, perhaps do a photo card for the family? How about a mini scrap book/felt tips/stickers for her to make a diary of the trip? Look in The Works. And spending money to chose something herself.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 15/12/2024 14:50

Please not a photo of your kids, that’s incredibly self absorbed. Just get the poor girl a lip balm kit or a little bracelet/English chocolate.

soundsys · 15/12/2024 14:52

My 10-year-old would love a book token and some sweets

ZiggyZowie · 15/12/2024 14:54

Most 20 year olds I know love stuff from Claire's accessories, like sequin purses, hairbands glittery backpacks that sort of thing.
Or a very simple necklace and matching bracelet .
