Christmas present for travelling 10 year old

Goldibollocks · 15/12/2024 14:21

My cousin and her family are coming to stay for a couple of days over Christmas and I'm struggling to think of a gift for their 10 year old daughter. They live overseas and will also be visiting friends in other cities around the Uk before they head back home, so I can't buy her anything bulky. We've never met her before but she's excited about meeting her (second) cousins.

I really have no idea what 10 year olds like; would a jumper and a picture of my newborn and toddler be a terrible idea? I mean I would have hated clothes as a 10 year old but they seem a lot more fashion conscious these days.

Please can I have some ideas. TIA

Sorry that should have said 10 not 20 year olds !!!

soundsys · 15/12/2024 14:55

Oh or stationery, most 10 year olds I know would like a nice notebook and pen and if she's travelling she could make use of them?

Or a sticker mosaic book (portable and good to do while travelling. The ones I'm thinking of are more akin to the adult colouring books you get, rather than a little kids sticker book)

Thanks everyone. I thought the photo was a cute idea 😂😂! We are their closest relatives by several thousand miles but will definitely forget that idea.

Will probably go down the sweets/chocolate idea

It might be nice to take one of them together with her when she is hereand send her a framed pic from them when she gets home along with a letter/card. Just not as a Christmas present 😄
In the scheme of things she's not that much older (or won't seem it in 15 years) so keeping a bit of a relationship going after the visit so they can be a bit closer as cousins would be nice anyway.

Depends on the child. Everyone here is saying different but my dd when she was that age would have loved a photo of her little cousins from so far away!

As long as it came with a proper gift like toys or chocolate.

Please not a photo of your kids, that’s incredibly self absorbed. Just get the poor girl a lip balm kit or a little bracelet/English chocolate.

I definitely am not self-absorbed! I haven't seen my cousin in about 15 years even though she's been to visit the UK a couple of times since I've been living here, the only reason they're really coming is because their daughter wants to meet her cousins so I thought it would be sweet idea. I was wrong.

No to the photo.
How about a travel game, either one she can play with her parents or one she can play alone, like cat stax?
Or a small 3-in 1 Lego set she can build into different things.
My DC2 would be happy with a book, maybe one set local or at least in the UK, or some kind of puzzle/activity or even a more grown up colouring book and pencils.

Imisschocolate17 · 15/12/2024 15:13

Origami set - loads of different kids ones available. Doesn't take up too much room, she can do it whilst travelling, easy to pack to take home and little momentum as she may put some out in her room at home (if anything like my DDs)

PomandersandRedRibbon · 15/12/2024 15:18

Card game? Exploding kittens goes down well at that age plus sweets and maybe a robux gift card but ask dp first re robux.

PomandersandRedRibbon · 15/12/2024 15:18

Lego 3 in one is a good shout, lego creator

I think you could get her a nice photo frame and have a photo of her with her cousins printed off. I would speak to her parents and look at what kind of things she enjoys. Some would like things like lipgloss whereas others would hate it. It's the same with books, art sets, crafting, clothes… It just depends what her interests are.

user1492757084 · 15/12/2024 15:55

A Rubiks Cube, a small bracelet making kit, an activity/sticker and colouring book, an Enid Blyton adventure book, a hat or scarf or mittens, puzzlebook, chocolate,Polly Pockets, ball, a ticket to a pantomine or wildlife or water park.

DogInATent · 15/12/2024 16:00

A pocket map of the UK, so they can see record where they've visited, a travel journal (or just a really nice quality notebook), and a pack of coloured pens or pencils. Particularly if they'll be bouncing around a few relatives in different towns and cities whilst they're here.

Travel journal = actually perfect.

Or a nice notebook and some gel pens and a suggestion to use it as a travel journal.
