How much do you spend on your hobbies in a year?

Just curious. It's obviously going to differ hugely. I have friends who spend thousands (horse riders, sailers, photographers) and others who spend next to nothing. However, even baking isn't cheap these days and the cost of acrylic paint + canvases for my painting is £££!

Well if we don't include tv subscriptions it's not too much 😂 I play netball, between insurance, subs and clothes it probably averages £50 a month. Oh I do yoga too but that's paid with my gym membership which I really don't call a hobby but a necessity tbh, the yoga is a bonus!

I do knitting and crochet and have all the basics re needles, hooks etc, plus a large stash of yarn which I really should be using up. But generally no more than a few pounds per month. I tend to make small items (hats, granny square bags, small dolls, ornaments and soft toys) which don't need a large outlay.

I also run, so a couple of hundred pounds per year to replace running shoes, leggings, tops etc if they wear out. Although I've spent nothing this year.

eurochick · 12/12/2024 09:07

I pay £7 a month for an online photography club. I already have most of the kit I want so it doesn't cost much other than that.

I do free exercise videos at home. So maybe one new pair of trainers a year plus the odd pair of leggings.

Books I don't want to think about.

Forgottenmyphone · 12/12/2024 09:24

@eurochick I had forgotten about books. In lockdown I spent hundreds on books. Fortunately I've got a library nearby.

@alfhroa It really hadn't occurred to me that netball would be that expensive.

A lot. 🫣 I have a horse and he alone costs me £300 a month. Toss in a few other cheaper sports, plus a couple bits of travel to do them, definitely around £5000 a year. 😩 Saying that, I really should enjoy it all so much more for the money I’m pouring into it.

NeedSomeComfy · 12/12/2024 09:28

I spend £85 a month on fees to two activities (yoga and salsa dancing). I've just had to buy a new outfit for the salsa Christmas party because they have a colour scheme 😁 but got it on vinted so not too bad. I have another hobby which was a biggish outlay for the initial equipment (~£200) but now just costs me a bit in accessories now and then.
I'd love to start roller skating too but I think that would be too much, both time and money wise!

MinnieMountain · 12/12/2024 09:31

£50 a month gym membership so I can swim. Probably £80ish a year on goggles and a costume.

afluffle · 12/12/2024 09:31

Keeping fit isn’t really a hobby though? More like self care

i spend zero (I’m not including exercise or food!), but DC’s lego habit is building up… he’s only 5 🫣

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 12/12/2024 09:32

£78pm for singing lessons and £5pw for choir fees.

Then £4-600 once a year for a large tapestry.

Flatwhitefiend · 12/12/2024 09:35

£10/m for hockey pitch fees. Otherwise my other hobbies are volunteering and the gym which is just the gym membership costs lol.

WinterBird24 · 12/12/2024 09:36

Around £400 pcm and I tell myself that’s less than a horse which is my first love, but not compatible with young kids.

I view it as a hobby. There’s loads of ways to keep fit so if you find one you’re passionate about it can be a hobby too. My horse kept me fit but it’s still a hobby.

Justonedayatatime11 · 12/12/2024 09:37

About £600 a month between livery, lessons and other horse related stuff 😳. Not cheap, but could never give it up

Jifmicroliquid · 12/12/2024 09:38

I have horses who cost me around £1k a month. So a lot.

MiddleAgedDread · 12/12/2024 09:41

£62 a month gym membership
3-4 pairs of running trainers a year approx £120 each
Then it's probably best if i don't try and add up all the money spent on races, travel and weekends away incorporating races or parkrun tourism, the bacon rolls and coffee afterwards etc.
oh, and sports massage approx once a month......

Ohgodnowwhat · 12/12/2024 09:41

Gym membership £60.

Running - I do ultra races and they are about £100 entry fee so maybe 4 of those a year. New running shoes every now and then. I used to have horses so I'm incredibly cheap to keep these days!

Downtherivers · 12/12/2024 09:41

Another one with a horse so in answer to your question, I spend too much - and don’t want to calculate how much she costs me each month. My other hobbies are fairly low cost and combined only amount to £150- £200 a month

Forgottenmyphone · 12/12/2024 09:49

@WinterBird24 £400 a month seems more than a horse if @mindutopia 's calculations are correct. Although I suppose a lot depends on whether you've got the stabling and grazing at your own house or whether you have to pay for livery. And whether or not you compete. My friend probably spends a couple of thousand on her horsebox alone - MOT, tax, diesel etc...

@OneRingToRuleThemAll
Tapestry sounds like an awesome hobby. Does one large tapestry take you the whole year?

£13 per week on Pilates, @£12 per week on Yoga, £34 per lesson on art classes, c£7 - £8 on Kindle books for book club every six weeks or so. There are breaks for half term and holidays so not all year. Also various ad hoc courses I sign up for that may cost a couple hundred pounds a time. Also the cost of socialising with each group.

I figure it's worth every penny as I'm early retired and don't want to become insular and isolated. My ex-husband spent thousands on his two course club membership fees plus playing whilst I stayed home during childcare and house maintenance. This is my turn to enjoy myself 😏

TheHistorian · 12/12/2024 09:52

Golf club not course club!

LimeYellow · 12/12/2024 09:54

I go running which is cheap (one new pair of trainers every 12-18 months, I've been wearing the same running gear for years).

Netball is £5 per week

I read a lot so that's my biggest expense, although I do look for 99p deals.

alfhroa · 12/12/2024 09:56

It really hadn't occurred to me that netball would be that expensive.

I train and play in a league (which requires an annual insurance cost) it's £50 most months but to be honest they do stop play over most school holidays so will average out less over the year.

Southwest12 · 12/12/2024 09:57

I've spent £50 on wool this week to make two blankets. Some months I don't buy any though. Crochet can be an expensive hobby! And have only bought 3 Lego sets this year, so only spent £400 on Lego this year.
