How much do you spend on your hobbies in a year?

Just curious. It's obviously going to differ hugely. I have friends who spend thousands (horse riders, sailers, photographers) and others who spend next to nothing. However, even baking isn't cheap these days and the cost of acrylic paint + canvases for my painting is £££!

At the moment I only do weekly Pilates class (£13 a class).

At home I do things like sewing/embroidery/furniture recycling/gardening, so all quite cheap.

I usually take horse riding lessons, a really expensive hobby, and I am hoping to restart when the weather gets better.

Also got a pair of new trainers this year to start running regularly.

Thousands, if you count the children as a hobby. I mean, I do enjoy them and they do take up an unreasonable amount of time.

😁The interesting thing about hobbies is you do them purely for fun/personal gain and can give them up if necessary. Sadly children don't fit that definition!

Another one with horses, although mine is at home so probably about 200 a month in winter for feed etc. That doesn't include vet bills which can be absolutely eye watering. She also takes up all my spare time so I don't have any other hobbies. It's madness, but I love looking after her.

Forgottenmyphone · 12/12/2024 09:49

@WinterBird24 £400 a month seems more than a horse if @mindutopia 's calculations are correct. Although I suppose a lot depends on whether you've got the stabling and grazing at your own house or whether you have to pay for livery. And whether or not you compete. My friend probably spends a couple of thousand on her horsebox alone - MOT, tax, diesel etc...

Livery is the biggest expense. If I had a horse I couldn’t keep it at home OR do DIY. I’d need full livery, which is a big cost. A horse on DIY or grass livery can be relatively inexpensive.

I spend £30 pm on choir membership plus driving to rehearsals 20 miles away, and to concerts up to 50 miles away. I lift share with 3 people so it’s not too bad. It sorts my asthma out as a bonus.

Sea swimming which had an initial outlay of a dry robe style thing plus costume, wetsuit shoes and gloves.

twistyizzy · 12/12/2024 12:20

Me: horse owner = 8K per year. Gundog training/activity = 2K per year Inc lessons + equipment
DD: horse riding = 3K per year on average including equipment

Dinoswearunderpants · 12/12/2024 12:25

I class travelling/holiday's as a hobby and I spend thousands each year.

I also had (recently cancelled) a gym membership at Nuffield and I do dance classes so spend roughly £1,500.

I love the idea of wild swimming but there's nowhere close by.

Anonimouse12345 · 12/12/2024 13:42

I used to spend around £500 a month on horses. Sometimes more on an expensive month.

Have a dog instead now so maybe £100, my hobby is walking and cleaning up after him 😄

PositiveLife · 12/12/2024 13:48

Mine vary a lot
The closest one to home costs £40 a month.
Another costs £40 a year plus fuel and odd bits and bobs.
The expensive one has cost me £5k+ this year (it's not usually that much)

KendalRose · 12/12/2024 14:05

A fortune. I don't mean to be mean but when people say going for a walk/run/swimming/to the gym/cooking/to the pub/cinema is their hobby, I feel bad for them!! But they're probably wealthier than me because of it 😅

I (with various members of my family) show dogs and it's costs probably around £100-£150 per show for two/three dogs and fuel. Probably 15-20 shows a year give or take. Obviously the dogs need feeding and grooming too and we haven't got just three dogs... 😁

A lot. 🫣 I have a horse and he alone costs me £300 a month. Toss in a few other cheaper sports, plus a couple bits of travel to do them, definitely around £5000 a year. 😩 Saying that, I really should enjoy it all so much more for the money I’m pouring into it.

Your horse only costs you £300. Please share with me your secrets! My aunties horses cost her at least £5500 a month.

QwestSprout · 12/12/2024 14:10

No one else has mentioned gaming so I shall stick my neck out and say about £1500-2000 a year depending what gets released. Apparently a lot less than a horse though!
I also paint so a few quid on canvases etc.

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 12/12/2024 14:23

I have two horses and try not to think about the cost 😂
Around £300 each for livery/bedding/feed/haylage.
Lessons/arena hire, around £100.
Show entries vary depending on time of year, around £30-90/month. Hunt cap is £30/time or £200/season.
Only one is insured at £70/month as the other is old and I have an emergency fund for him.
£25/month for a horse health thing for them both with the vet which covers worm counts/jabs/dental.
£30 each for a hoof trim, around every 2 months.
I’d estimate a conservative £150/month on bits&bobs, clothing, boots, rugs etc.
My trailer is paid for but a yearly service is around £60. I also have a 4x4 to tow with which is a bit pricey to run.
Of course, there’s then vet bills that pop up. One of mine coliced in Feb and it was £300. My youngster feactured her leg last year and that cost £3000, although it was covered by inusrance.

Absolutely ridiculous, really.

beguilingeyes · 12/12/2024 14:35

Mine is going to gigs and it probably takes most of my disposable income. I'm off to Holland tomorrow for a concert and contemplating Canada next spring.

alfhroa · 12/12/2024 14:49

Is it stabled in Westminster?!

One horse costs her £5500 a month?? What’s she feeding it? Gold?

I thought my grand a month was pretty bad, but that’s for multiple horses.

Why on earth do you feel bad for them? They are my sort of hobbies and I'm extremely content. I certainly don't feel like I'm missing out or am bored!

Anyway to answer the question:

£30 a month on gym membership.

£17 a month on my Spotify subscription for listening to podcasts. I listen to at least one a day but that's a shared cost between DH, myself and both DDs so in reality my share is less than that.

Very little on reading. Maybe £30 a year but I read all the time, I just tend to use the library or the free books on my Kindle via Prime.

£5 a month or so on my puzzle magazines.

And god knows how much on the garden. I actually dread to think but I've completely redesigned it on my own. It'll be hundreds of pounds a year but keeps me busy and brings me a lot of joy. If I ever finally get to the top of the allotment list the cost will go up even further!

"A man's hobby costs him nothing." - R S Surtees.

[And a gold star to anyone who knows who he was!]

A writer!

My hobby is writing and I pay £20 a year subs to be part of my writing circle - I cannot tell you how much I spend on notebooks and gel pens however (I don't want to know because it would probably horrify me!)

Oh and I am on the waiting list for an allotment.

Why would you feel bad for them? What a judgemental post. I’d find showing dogs incredibly tedious, but each to their own.

Chemenger · 12/12/2024 17:53

I play golf. My membership fee is £630 a year, I probably spend a couple of hundred more on balls, lessons etc. I spent a lot on equipment last year but don’t expect to spend that again for a good few years. Given that a round of golf at our course is £140 membership is a good deal.

Nap1983 · 12/12/2024 17:54

Im around 1k monthly for my horse. Utterly ridiculous amount of money, but i love her, had her 15yrs. Wont have another once she departs

I no longer show, but still have four dogs. That's it for me now, no more pups, might end up with elderly rescues after this gang go over the rainbow bridge, but I was working it out roughly the other day, food, insurance, flea and worm, vet.... easily £500- £600 a month. Most of that on food.

They are worth every penny though - I haven't had a holiday in almost 10yrs, would much rather have the dogs. My Dsis has gone the opposite way, from multiple dogs to none, so is now much more free and spends all her money on overseas travel. To each their own.

Have to admit with a lead up like that I was expecting a much cooler hobby 😂
