Is it normal to feel cold all the time?

I don't just mean a little bit cold every now and then. I mean I'm always freezing. I'm at work inside an office, everyone else is just wearing normal clothes for this time of year, and we've got the heating on at an average temperature. I'm wearing tights, a pair of fleece lined leggings, a vest tucked in, a t shirt and a sweatshirt on top and all I can think about is how cold I am, to the point I'm physically uncomfortable. I'm like it in summer too, everyone else will be wearing shorts, tshirts, dresses etc and I would still be in jeans & a jumper feeling cold

I wonder if it's normal to feel like this or if it's just who I am and I'll feel like this forever. I've had blood tests done previously and always been told my thyroid function is normal

There are deficiencies that can cause this, and thyroid problems, I'd ask the gp for a blood test.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/12/2024 14:05

ask to see the actual figures from your blood tests. You can still have serious symptoms if your thyroid (or other measures) are at the lower end of normal but many Dr's just consider it to be "normal" and tell you there's not a problem!

BobbyBiscuits · 10/12/2024 14:07

I used to be like this when I had severe mal nutrition. Take a multivitamin, folate, magnesium, iron? It does depend on what your lacking but it must be something. Are you underweight? Have low blood pressure? You should see your GP who will probably ask about your diet and want a blood test.

I think some of us are just physically colder. I am permanently freezing for most of the year, and tbh even in summer I’m a bit chilly at anything under 25 degrees. 30 plus is necessary for me to be really comfortable - in the only time I’ve really gone “ooh, it is a bit warm isn’t it?” was in the Australian outback at around 48 degrees!

I do have Raynauds, have you been checked for that?

AlwaysFreezing · 10/12/2024 14:15

No, i don't think it is. But my GP does. So, I'm always freezing. Like bed socks and a jumper under a 16 tog duvet freezing cold.

Hence the user name.

BTW I am overweight and probably perimenopausal. So it really doesn't add up. Thyroid levels are 'fine'.

OnlySlightly · 10/12/2024 14:17

The only times I’ve felt perpetually cold was when I’d lost a lot of weight quite quickly because of illness.

Do you move around a lot, OP? Do you warm up if you’re outdoors exercising?

Same. I went to Death Valley in the summer and said it was nice not having to take a coat.

This 100%! I feel crap when I’m at the end close to the TSH of 4 I thrive being right down the other end closer to zero

Nucon · 10/12/2024 14:52

Thanks everyone. I remember them saying my results are at the lower end of normal but still what they would class as normal range. I do have a lot of the classic symptoms of underactive thyroid but not sure how I could get them to do anything if they say it's normal?

I'm the same OP, I think my internal thermostat broke when I lost a significant amount of weight about a decade ago. I'm only comfortable during a heatwave. I work from home and wrap a heated throw around me - sometimes I still feel chilled even though I know that can't actually be possible. Cup of tea and a heated blanket turned up to max, with layers on top and bottom half and still chilly? It can really get me down sometimes.

I recently had a blood test and I'm fit as a fiddle apparently. Though I haven't seen the actual figures, that might be worth asking about.

DecayingRelic · 10/12/2024 15:03

I am always freezing too, I have 12 layers on my bed, I counted them,🙄 and wear bedsocks and electric blanket on for an hour before bed, I live up North and have had my heating on every day apart from one this summer.

Only time I was warm was in Cyprus in July😎

amicissimma · 10/12/2024 16:42

It is for me. I also have low blood pressure, but no nutritional problems. I walk and cycle a lot. My GP is not interested. I'm considered a bit odd by people who know me.

My best fix is to have a heated footwarmer when I'm sitting for periods. Warm feet really help the rest of me.

jamdonutsare · 11/12/2024 06:51

I thought that everyone has the nhs app nowadays?

you’ll see all your blood test results for at least the last 15 years so you can compare results. They also have easy to understand graphs on there.

Thanks for pointing out the blood tests are on there! That is super helpful.

biscuitsandbooks · 11/12/2024 07:03

No, it's not normal.

You say your thyroid levels are normal but have you had your iron, B12 and ferritin levels checked?

MikeRafone · 11/12/2024 07:06

What is your TSH? “Normal” is up to 4 but ideally it’s better nearer 1 for many people

have a look on the app for the reading

Nucon · 11/12/2024 10:53

My app doesn't show any blood results or anything like that, just some basic information. Will see if I can get hold of them

Iwishiwasagiraffe · 11/12/2024 14:02

im the same OP and it’s horrible. Currently wearing fluffy leggings, a vest, jumper and oodie and under a heated blanket and I’m cold. And the heatings on. Only way I get warm is a very hot bath.

I got blood tests done a few years ago and they said all was normal. I didn’t see my results tho and I don’t think I can get the app with all the details because I’m in wales and my health board don’t do it. Which is really annoying.

I'm not underweight either, I’m average bmi and weight. Sometimes my hands and feet are so cold they’re painful. Not Raynauds though because the colour of them is normal

my normal body temperature always seems quite low around 36 degrees and I have low blood pressure

LegoHouse274 · 11/12/2024 14:10

Are you quite thin? Weight has a lot to do with temperature.

Disturbia81 · 11/12/2024 14:38

Mine depends on my weight, last year I barely needed a coat in winter and didn't wear hat scarf gloves. This year I'm back to my normal freezing self all the time, I need a heater pointed at me all the time I'm home!

DecayingRelic · 11/12/2024 14:50

I have been thin and fat, still cold😬

BlackeyedSusan · 11/12/2024 15:44

Merino wool thermal base layers.
I wear two three if necessary, three pairs of socks, thick boots, on top half: two base layers, (one merino, one synthetic) woolly jumper, fleece, fleece hoody or two and coat. Fingerless gloves and scarf.

I can't regulate heat well. Get too hot in summer too cold I winter.

Autistic/hypermobile. Might be linked to hypermobility. Not had blood tests so can't rule anything out that would be tested by them.

honeyfox · 11/12/2024 16:33

Same here, can't regulate and get too hot or too cold. On medication for underactive thyroid and blood results appear within range (although i don't have those handy graphics as not in the UK).

Sitting here at work now and frozen.

eurochick · 11/12/2024 19:57

I was cold from puberty until my mid-40s. One of the few benefits of peri is that I'm no longer cold all the time. Just some of the time.

RudolfIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/12/2024 20:25

I’m peri and still fecking freezing. Some days I long for a hot flash.
