What is the closest tasting supermarket drinking chocolate to Cadburys drinking chocolate (which is not available ATM due to product recall)?

Just that really?
Hopefully one that's cheaper than the £4.50 for 500g that Cadburys one costs!

I have actually tried mixing cocoa powder in with the Cadburys drinking chocolate to make it go further but the cocoa powder doesn't dissolve very well in the hot milk.

Mix it with cold milk to make a paste then add the hot milk to that (or add more cold and microwave it all)

CrazyAndSagittarius · 08/12/2024 23:51

Cocoa powder is hydrophobic so it resists being mixed with a fluid. As PPs have said you have to mix it with a small bit of fluid first into it forms a paste (it takes a few minutes) and then add the rest of the milk.

Hydrophobic eh, new word of the day for me.

So if Cadburys is mainly cocoa and sugar, how do they make it non-hydrophobic?

It's probably mixed with the sugar thoroughly enough for the sugar to help the cocoa absorb water and disperse. And it will be a high ratio of sugar to cocoa to achieve that.

No idea! But it’s why you struggle to get it to mix in a whole cup of milk!

Buy a dairy milk bar, grate it, and melt it into hot milk whilst whisking it. Tastes fine, especially with a bit of vanilla and some gingerbread essence!

No. Wrong stuff. Get Cocoa powder and mix that with sugar. Then mix with a splash of cold milk to make a paste.

XmasTopic · 09/12/2024 12:10

Would a ratio of 2 parts sugar to one part cocoa powder work?
Just granulated sugar or caster sugar?

Granulated like you’d put in tea or coffee. I’d say it’s about 50/50 cocoa powder to sugar.

GrouchyKiwi · 09/12/2024 12:29

If you can't be arsed faffing about trying to work out sugar to cocoa ratios, then Aldi's "Specially selected" drinking chocolate is good.

PickAChew · 09/12/2024 12:34

I used to make it 1:1 and used caster sugar as that's why we had - none of us take it in tea or coffee. It's easy to add more sugar if you need to. Harder to take it out.

UtterlyOtterly · 09/12/2024 12:40

I just mix coco powder and sugar with a bit of milk, adding some orange essence or a bit of spice if I feel like it. Then add hot water. I prefer a higher ratio of coco to sugar than ready mixed brands.

I tried this and it was ok but not as good as the Cadburys drinking chocolate.

Has anyone seen it in stock in any shop yet?

M&S is pretty good- I'd say better than Cadburys

M and s is lush, we buy the one to add water too though not the milk one.

Has anyone actually seen Cadburys drinking chocolate in a supermarket recently?
Have they given up making it?

I saw it back on the shelves in Tesco today.

BashfulClam · 13/01/2025 19:34

Twinings is gorgeous.

Arlanymor · 13/01/2025 19:37

Menier cocoa powder - mix with full fat milk and squirt some Le President vanilla creme - bliss.

Nimle77 · 13/01/2025 19:45

I like Aldis low calorie hot chocolate, I prefer it to cadburys now and it's only 40 calories a cup . I have it when I crave a chocolate fix .

femininomenon · 13/01/2025 19:53

A local cafe had a sign out at the weekend saying 'CADBURYS HOT CHOCOLATE IS BACK' so I'd hoped I'd be able to get some in my Tesco order but they still didn't have any, hopefully by next week they will if pp has also seen it in store.

Hayley1256 · 13/01/2025 22:43

Ocado have it and I'm sure I saw it in Morrisons

Thenose · 13/01/2025 23:06

This is how to make hot chocolate:

Add 1 part cocoa powder, 2 parts sugar (it doesn't matter whether it's caster or granulated - it will dissolve) and 3 parts milk powder to a jar or other container and shake to mix.

Add 5-6 teaspoons to a mug.
Add just enough milk to make a smooth paste.
Top up slowly with boiling water, stirring continously.

SabbatWheel · 13/01/2025 23:59

Clipper Hot Chocolate is lovely and can be made with water, although I add a drop of cold milk to the top.

I just use cacao and condensed milk. It's really good and chocolatey and easy.

Couple of tablespoons of cacao (or cocoa) in a cup.

Little bit of milk.

2 tbsps of condensed milk

Mix it all together until you get a paste.

Full cup up with milk and stir again.

Microwave for 1 min, stir, microwave for 30 secs.

I sometimes top with a bit of cream for extra creaminess.. Add whatever other accoutrements you fancy.

Condensed milk is very sweet so you don't need any more sugar.

I do this too. So good.

DearestItIsSnowing · 14/01/2025 00:17

@CrazyAndSagittarius condensed milk? Sounds yummy, but I have only seen condensed milk on sale on tins.
If you use 2tbsp per cup, how long does the rest of the tin last until it goes off?

Or do you just eat the rest of it with a spoon? 😉
