If you work 4 days what do you do on your day off?

From January I will be working Tues - Fri only (yay 😁). Looking forward to every weekend being a long weekend but want to make the most of the extra day.

What do you do on your 'extra' day off?

Care for the baby, playgroup for baby, school and nursery drop offs and pick ups, catch up on laundry, prep dinner.

I dream of an actual day off to myself though. I think I'd do reformer pilates and spend time in nature. Be someone who buys thoughtful presents and has organised drawers.

Binfire · 08/12/2024 09:08

Ooh lovely! Having a day off in the week is such a great. I have Friday off and will protect it with my life.

I have a walk followed by a Pilates class with a friend. Then I head out and do a supermarket shop for the weekend and any errands I need to run.

Then I go home and put the shopping away, have a quick tidy up and go to pick my son up from school.

Sometimes I have lunch with my Mum and my sister.

It’s a bit rushed but it means I don’t have to spend the weekend doing jobs, and I don’t have to fight my way around the supermarket at the weekend.

Once you’re in a rhythm you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it!

MintGlitter · 08/12/2024 09:08

School run, house work, dog walk and food shopping.

Try to have an hour to myself before picking the kids up.

Notoironing · 08/12/2024 09:09

I mainly work on my non working day. I keep it as a non working day so I can always be there to pick the children up from school and not have to go into the office

curious79 · 08/12/2024 09:09

I’m in london - go to a gallery / museum (always keeping an eye on latest shows / exhibitions), or do admin/ catch up on life. I always regret when I don’t head out and do something

Cottonheadedninhymuggins · 08/12/2024 09:10

I only work 3 hours on a Friday so just over half a day off. If I’ve no shopping, dentist, hair, drs etc then I just head home and do bed changes, hoovering, cleaning etc. it takes a couple of hours then I will either go for a long walk or catch up on anything I want to see on TV while I wait on DS coming in from college and DH coming in from work. It all depends really. I make myself busy as for me, it would be too easy to come in on a Friday lunchtime and watch TV for the rest of the day, eat shite and open a Prosecco!

LlynTegid · 08/12/2024 09:11

Help my mum when I visit is the main reason I went to four days. Have also visited some places near where I live that I never have got around to.

Mumof1andacat · 08/12/2024 09:12

School run, errands like post office, housework, and appointments like hair dressers. Not exciting but gets a few things out the way so I don't have to do it on the weekend.

TheGriffle · 08/12/2024 09:12

Housework, nip to the supermarket for any bits I couldn’t get over the weekend/forgot, DD’s school seem to have a lot of events on a Monday (I’m there the next 2 Mondays for a couple of hours a day), or inset days so I’m looking after her or I go with my mum to visit my Nan in the care home for a couple of hours.

The day goes really quickly, it’s only a 6 hour slot from getting home from the school run to heading back out to do pick ups. I usually make sure I have an hour or so to chill in front of the tv while I eat lunch as well.

ZenNudist · 08/12/2024 09:13

School run, maybe go for a run first thing,, tidy house, sort admin, swim, lunch with DH, food shop and put away, pick up 10yo from school, cook a few dishes for the week, tidy house, read with ds, slump exhausted into bed!

Innocentrailway · 08/12/2024 09:14

I exercise - gym, swim and sauna, or meet up with a friend for a walk in the morning. Then in the afternoon I catch up with jobs around the house. I love my day off - 4 day weeks are great!

PerambulationFrustration · 08/12/2024 09:14

Mostly a walk, supermarket shop and some cleaning.
Occasionally meet up with a friend for a walk and lunch.
Relaxing with some tv.

NCfor24 · 08/12/2024 09:15

Pilates and errands. Sometimes lunch with a friend. I'll iron and fold laundry but it's so much better doing it in an empty house with a film on.
I have Monday off too and I love it.

JustAFear · 08/12/2024 09:17

Pre-kids I used mine for getting all my errands done to keep my weekends free. Also I found it was cheaper to do things off peak - my hairdresser did cheaper appointments on a Monday, etc.

TheGriffle · 08/12/2024 09:18

Monday is the best day to have off I’ve found. Was previously off Thursday, Friday but I much prefer my Monday off. I feel like I get a reset after the weekend with the kids. No Sunday evening dread of going back to work (and I don’t seem to get that Monday night either, must be something about Sundays!)

PreBlendOils · 08/12/2024 09:20

Im in the same position from January and I can't wait! I plan to do an exercise class in the morning, grab lunch and a coffee on the way home, then take ddog for a big walk on the moors. I'll then have a couple of hours left to either do my hobby, or tackle any big job or errand that needs doing.

It's tempting to fill the time by doing jobs/prep for the week but taking time for your mental health is even more important! I'm teetering on the edge of burnout and have been for most of this year, and if I don't slow down then everything will fall apart.

SilverBlueRabbit · 08/12/2024 09:20

I have Fridays off and do all the ironing (in front of netflix); batch cook for the week ahead; as much housework as i can do etc. Mainly so that i can spend the weekend with the family without doing any of that.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 08/12/2024 09:21

Go for a run, im learning another language, meet a friend for a coffee, clean the house - working 4 days is brilliant

purpleme12 · 08/12/2024 09:23

Completely depends.
Tidying/cleaning that I haven't had time to do.
Christmas shopping as it's the only chance I get.
Sometimes I've slept 😞
Watch a film although haven't done that for a while!!
Any odds and ends
Sit in a cafe and have a having bacon sandwich and drink

LemongrassLollipop · 08/12/2024 09:24

I don't work on weds. I try to have a long (hour) walk in the morning then it's usually shopping, laundry , clean/tidy house, family admin/payments, errands, fill the car up, catch up on work, try to have a sit down lunch. Kids need picking up at 3.15 then cook tea, clubs, reading/homework, try to get them to bed at decent time.
Not sure where I would find time to do all this if I didn't have this day off!
Bloody knackered!!!

I'd much prefer to do this than what my post says!

I want to build in self care in the new year 🤞🏽

Tintackedsea · 08/12/2024 09:27

Do the housework and cooking for my parents
Phone calls and booking things - life admin for my parents
Have a shag (dh is self employed so he reorganises his diary!)
Go for a walk in daylight
Phone my sister
Do my other job which is writing based so needs thinking time
See to the sheep and chickens
Deal with the polytunnels
Laundry

I love my day. Gives me space to breathe. It does mean really long days the rest of the week but I think it's worth it.

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 08/12/2024 09:28

I recently moved to working compressed hours, five days in four. My DCs are at university, recently lost my beloved mum, so my non-working day is so I can help my lovely dad if he needs anything, or just spend time with him.
I usually walk my dog, do a body pump class at the gym, catch up on house work/admin, then the weekends are clearer for DH and I to spend time together.
It works perfectly for us, really helps me manage my commitments as someone in 'Gen Sandwich'

SallyWD · 08/12/2024 09:28

Lovely! I also work Tuesday to Friday. I don't do anything terribly exciting, but I love my day off work.
I always go for a little walk then just generally do a few house chores. I batch cook a meal so we have food to eat after my working days, tidy up a bit, maybe do some ironing in front of a film.
This all sounds boring but I really enjoy it!

Lobstercrisps · 08/12/2024 09:30

I do yoga, then any health appts like osteopath or physio, then home for lunch, a lovely sleep after lunch then errands/shopping, laundry, cooking for dinner then school run (teens).

I want to go to three days a week at some point so I can use a day off for something useful for me.
