Would you run errands in 50mph gusts and moderate rain?

Not using trains or buses, just driving around town locally.

BeMintBee · 07/12/2024 11:31

Not if I didn’t have to

mindutopia · 07/12/2024 11:32

Yep, where we live that’s like every 2 days out of 7, very typical weather. I just wouldn’t leave my car under any trees. Or myself for that matter.

FrenchFancie · 07/12/2024 11:32

I’m going to have too! Been ill in bad with flu all week and bloody secret Santa is due in at work on Tuesday….

LigamentBandy · 07/12/2024 11:33

Not unless it was medical based ( prescription etc) or to stop an "elderly" or "infirm" person going. Just to pop to shop because I fancied a bag of crisps or whatever no

chipsandpeas · 07/12/2024 11:34

yes if i couldnt leave them

lljkk · 07/12/2024 11:35

I have done, on bicycle & on foot. Sure of course I might in car, but not if I could delay.

RosieLeaf · 07/12/2024 11:36

Yes

biscuitsandbooks · 07/12/2024 11:36

Yes. Totally normal winter weather where I live.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 07/12/2024 11:36

I am, got to pop out after lunch in the car then I’m going out for a meal this evening🫣
Got to drive about 20 miles.

I’d rather not go really but feel like I’d be the only one who cancels.

allthatfalafel · 07/12/2024 11:41

I'm doing it walking, a car would be a nice luxury!

MightySnail · 07/12/2024 11:42

Yes, this happens every couple of weeks throughout winter around here. Nobody does anything differently.

TheFlis · 07/12/2024 11:44

Yes well be taking the dog for a walk shortly, going to a Christmas fair and couple of shops this afternoon and then maybe stopping off at the pub on the way home.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/12/2024 11:45

Yes where we live, it’s very regular.

Eggnogger · 07/12/2024 11:46

Yes. I've already been out to Tesco this morning.

TobiasForgesContactLense · 07/12/2024 11:46

Yes we have that forecast but only a yellow warning. I have just taken DS to his swimming lesson with no problems. This afternoon I will take him to the barbers, the library and a birthday party. All within 2 miles of home and not rural.

wetotter · 07/12/2024 11:46

I'm in the yellow zone. It's raining and according to the Met Office site the wind is just shy of 50, set to rise to a bit over 50 for the rest of the day. I've not seen any damaged trees, and the scaffolding on the house at the end of the street is still in situ, but some bins have been blown around and ended up nestled where the street bends.

I'd still go out locally if the errand was both important and also could not reasonably be postponed.

I'm planning a day of wrapping and writing Christmas cards (and titting about online). DDog will still need walking, but she doesn't like this weather, so we will be going out again later but I suspect it'll be (like this morning) a quickie round the block as she'll try to head for home as soon as she's peed and pooed.

BiddyPop · 07/12/2024 11:46

Yes as I am well used to that level of weather. With care on the roads and picking my parking and errand locations carefully.

But I probably would have tried to be organised to do them before the bad weather arrived or see can I wait until it dies down before I committed to going out.

Proper rain and 70mph - I am staying home!

FlabbergastedByTheGorgons · 07/12/2024 11:48

Yes. I'm doing it as we speak, it's a bit wet and gusty but no drama.

PauliesWalnuts · 07/12/2024 11:49

I’ve just gone to pick up a prescription from the chemist as I need it urgently (progesterone for heavy bleeding) but otherwise I’m staying in, writing Xmas cards, making manhattan clam chowder and doing the ironing. Having said that, I’m in Mcr and we’ve had a lot of rain but otherwise seem to be escaping the wind so far.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 07/12/2024 11:49

In a yellow zone, I've already been to the gym and popped to the shops. Going out later to a gig this evening.

rainbowunicorn · 07/12/2024 11:52

Where I live we spend about half the time between end of October and end of March under a yellow warning. Wind of between 50 and 60 are a regular occurrence. Probably at least fortnightly. Everyone just gets on with life as no other choice.

allmybooksarefromthelibrary · 07/12/2024 11:53

I might think twice about a long distance journey, but local errands I wouldn’t think twice about.

verycloakanddaggers · 07/12/2024 11:58

If in the red zone, no.
But presumably you're in a yellow area? Then it's your call but be aware.

I would follow any specific local instructions not to travel.

NeedMorePlasters · 07/12/2024 12:06

Really hate driving in it so avoid going out in 50+. Live rurally and once witnessed a tree fall on a car just a few metres in front of mine. Scared the crap out of me - luckily no-one hurt as it fell towards the back of it but it could have been a very different story.

Sia8899 · 07/12/2024 12:07

Yes, nothing is closed here and the weather isn’t a lot worse than normal it’s just lasting longer. But I’d prefer to stay at home!
