Anyone else feeling really nervous about Storm Darragh?

GinaDreamsofRunningAway · 06/12/2024 13:00

We are under a red warning here now and I am feeling sick to my stomach. DH and I have done all we can to prepare. Sandbags by the front door, torches with batteries, everything on charge, moved and weighed down everything outside, got logs in to keep the wood burner going all weekend, we have plenty of food.

But I am feeling so unwell and anxious about our home being flooded or having our property damaged. I have been unable to eat today and can't function.

I know this isn't normal but I have had 'weather anxiety' for my whole adult life and I know its silly and I feel stupid for feeling so nervous about something that is out of my control.

Is anyone else feeling the same? How are others in the same situation coping with this? Any tips?

@GinaDreamsofRunningAway your in a red zone and you have prepared and worried about this.
Surley this is natural instinct to survive kicking in??
I'm really anxious too but I'm in yellow!!

I wouldn't worry. We're currently having the loft converted so have no roof on our house. We didn't during Storm Bert either. I'm just going to stop at the shop on the way home for a couple of bottles of wine which will hopefully help me ignore / not panic about the water coming through the ceiling and all the building materials flying off the roof.

I may not have a roof on my house by the end of the weekend! 😬😂

Pretty worried about any severe weather.

Havent given it a thought. Currently on the train for a night out with friends .
Your anxiety seems disproportionate

Well aren’t you the lucky one? 🙄 Have a lovey night. I’m sure we won’t here in the red alert area.

Genuine question, why did you choose to move to a flood risk house and not later move to somewhere with no issues if you've had weather anxiety your whole life?

Edited

Good question. We didn’t know it was a flood risk house when we moved here. We had absolutely zero problems for 10 years. We couldn’t move before now because it would have meant moving our secondary age kids out of their schools during GCSE and A level times so not something we would have done.

I have terrible weather anxiety too. We are in the yellow zone, on the edge of amber so I know I shouldn't be panicking but I'm prone to anxiety and depression anyway so....
I'm petrified about the roof coming off or enough tiles to make water come through the ceilings. Last year we had freak torrential rain and wind, some localised thunderstorm and water came through the roof in a couple of places. One of them being my son's bedroom so I was worried about the ceiling falling on him. Obviously we had it fixed but I became obsessed with checking ceilings etc. We've had some very heavy rainfalls since then but it's been ok and no repeat occurrences.
The wind sounded so loud during Storm Arwen, I woke up in the night and couldn't stop shaking. Seems like it's going to be similar wind but in the daytime. I just have to keep telling myself the roof didn't come off then so it won't this time.

Anyway just here to tell you I know how you feel with the weather anxiety. My husband is reassuring and calm about it.

longtompot · 06/12/2024 22:55

I'm worried for my ds and his gf as they are in the red zone. Hopefully they are far enough inland for it to not be as bad as on the coast.

I hope everyone in the predicted worst areas stays safe and any damage is easily fixed

With a red weather alert? Not really.

Just got home after a lovely night.

NotMeForBakeoff · 06/12/2024 23:12

Bins have been moved, but nothing else.

mrlistersgelfbride · 06/12/2024 23:13

Yes, I am.
I'm officially in amber but only just, town down the road is yellow.
It must be worrying for those in the red. Of course stay home taking precautions and wait for it to pass.

I was wondering for those with children in amber, are people going about everyday activities or staying in? I'm not sure if I should take DD to her hobby or not. We could get the train (but they will probably be cancelled).

I’m in amber and were meant to be going to the cinema tomorrow but the winds say still 70 mph so we will be giving it a miss

madaboutpurple · 06/12/2024 23:26

Ah I do pray that everyone is ok. It is worrying people.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 06/12/2024 23:30

No. Not worried. Not in Wales or Ireland though, where it seems like it's going to be bad/worse. (I'm in the Midlands.) Still a bit of a risk, but I'm not feeling nervous no.

Cantonet · 06/12/2024 23:31

Yes.
Mainly because DD1 has to drive 40 mins on the motorway between Cardiff & Bridgend in a red warning to work in Wales at 8am tomorrow.

Plus ds2 (18) has to be at work for 6am tomorrow 39 mins away & is a relatively newly qualified driver.

blackpear · 07/12/2024 00:05

I’m scared too, OP, and also suffer from anxiety, so you have all my sympathies. We have a tall tree and I’ve been trying to get it pollarded for months, but we’re in a conservation area, so it takes ages. I’m choosing to think that this time tomorrow it will be over and hope all will be well.

snoopysnoooper · 07/12/2024 00:13

I'm meant to be driving from West Yorkshire down the M1 to my family in Notts (just south of Sheffield so only 1hr 20. It's yellow warning here so not too bad, gusts of about 57 at the highest. I was going to cancel but not sure if I'm being very overly cautious?!

snoopysnoooper · 07/12/2024 00:14

Also hoping everyone who is getting it bad in the red zone stays safe 🙏🏻

I would tell them not to do it. A red is very unusual.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 07/12/2024 06:56

I'm in yellow but the wind has woke me up it's relentless not gusts

OrangesCinammonIvy · 07/12/2024 06:57

@Cantonet in red it's gusts up to 90mph. I'd also say don't do it. What journey is worth risk to life

Yellow zone too but it's shockingly bad and staying this way for hours.

Cantonet · 07/12/2024 07:32

DD1 still has to go into work. She's been told to drive carefully!
Current gusts of over 70 in Cardiff/Bridgend with power cuts.

Ds2 drove in early this morning to work at 5.30 but we're in a yellow warning with gusts of 45ish. It's a rural area though so there would have been debris on the roads. I'm assuming he got there safely.

It's mad that people are expected to travel to non-essential work for this. DC works in a cafe and has to go in, although we're in the red zone and clocked 91mph winds this morning! Who the hell is going out for a latte and a toasted teacake in this?!

Kendodd · 07/12/2024 08:41

No I was excited, especially when I got the phone alert.
I love a good storm Smile
