Reform UK rising in popularity with young men

ILoveCustardTartsFromTescoBakery · 04/12/2024 23:47

It's just being spoken about by Ben Kentish on LBC

Just about how Reform UK have a large following of 18-35 year old men. Specially men, not women.

Why is this? What's driving them?

The fact that some many young men voted for very far right leaders elsewhere in the western world is also being spoken about

So far, the opinion seems to be that it's because Reform UK are very active on TikTok/Instagram Confused seems unlikely but I don't have a better idea

I personally know a few young men who are 'all for' Nigel Fanny but I don't understand the appeal, although I also noticed it's always men that seem to support him the most

For context, I'm 27. Married. Own husband seems to say 'well I don't hate him, no'. Argh.

I'll be voting Reform if no one sorts out immigration.

You and many others . I think it's a rising level of concern everywhere in Europe and the States .

eurochick · 05/12/2024 06:21

There is so much right wing propaganda on social media now. I looked at my rarely-used twitter account the other day and my feed was full of anti-immigration stuff. Some of it was blatant but some of it was quite subtle. If I (boring Centrist lawyer who likes cat videos) am getting a feed like that I wonder what the hell someone who has followed Farage or Fox News is getting.

RingoJuice · 05/12/2024 06:25

@Ladamesansmerci

Unfortunately feminism and immigration are the scapegoats, when in reality the primary driver is economic and social inequality

Its all wrong (well immigration is a big factor tho)

I am tired of seeing British people say ‘inequality’ is the problem. Actually, you need to grow the economy and accept that there will be winners and losers in that situation.

Right now you are just cutting the same pie with smaller slices for everyone.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Some of Trump's policies are way beyond centre right and inciting an insurection is far right.

The Democrats have clear left wing policies on labour laws, the environment, healthcare, welfare and taxes.

Democrat policy is not popular among voters tbh we just have a different political culture.

I try to get my British friends to understand this but they just can’t. Just a cultural difference.

Parents tell their average kids they are special
Kids believe their parents and even when teachers point out they are average parent's have egos the size of Jupiter and can't possibly believe their offspring is average
Kids, young adults see other young adults with fancy cars and private jets on social media and think they are special as well so it won't be long before they get a private jet
Thy still don't value school so get average results
Other students work hard, more girls, more children of immigrants
The students who work hard move on, uni, apprenticeship jobs and move up
The average slackers are still in the same place three years later
But because they have been told they are special it can't be their fault
Step in social media poison
"Put women back in their place, blame lesser brown people, you are the white male gods really people have just forgotten to worship you so vote for us and we will make them do it by force"

Similar feelings that everyone should worship their old crusty knobs from the stale average failed white men.

And similar feelings from women around them "my billy should have a private jet by now".

The basic facts they have done nothing ever of any note is irrelevant.

Everyone thinks they should have everything they want by doing fuck all so dislike anyone with anything especially females or brown people.

It will swing back again once someone with enough charm enters the influence sphere who can persuade many that hard work and acceptance is admirable things will change.

As little people all we can do is ensure our children don't get poisoned by this thinking.

I think people who feel left behind should be listened to, investment across the uk needs to happen, jobs, security and hope needs to be reintroduced into society but if the left behinds aren't willing to accept that perhaps they have some contribution to their plight then I don't think we should waste too many resources on them.

SallyWD · 05/12/2024 07:07

I think a lot of working class men feel lost and aimless. In the past (such as when my parents were growing up) they had a sense of purpose and pride. There were many professions they could go into, they'd settle down young and become fanily men. These days many of the jobs traditionally associated with working class men no longer exist in this country.
Working class communities absolutely have been left behind as the country has moved on. I strongly believe that none of this is the fault of immigrants but they're easy scapegoats. They distract from government failings. They give people a focus for their anger.

frozendaisy · 05/12/2024 07:12

And everyone who posts on social media tying to create the perfect illusion of great holidays, perfect family, wonderful valentine's presents, amazing home is part of this poison.

Fine get the matching Christmas pyjamas, get an amazing kitchen, your pile of new books to read, send the pictures to your WhatsApp groups they are the only people interested.

We all have a part to play to curb this monster.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 05/12/2024 07:16

I could be wrong but didn't a study come out a few years ago that young white males were being left behind in school?

This doesn’t ring true to me at all. Like come on, no WWC male thinks they deserve a freaking private plane! Let’s face it, they probably need a reliable
car … the working class in the UK are really poor by Western standards.

You don’t even need to make much of an investment. Just pull their benefits and give them jobs to do.

In Japan they have crews of working class men just pouring concrete over and over again in the countryside … I don’t think they’ve a natural river left at this point lol

So why don't they do something about it move with times?
Take on caring roles, go back to college, train up to be nurses say?

It's a decent profession?

No they think that work is beneath them. It's woman's work. There's no such thing now.

Loads of white male nurses in America because it actually pays very well
and has a flexible schedule. All you need is an associate’s degree so it’s relatively easy field to enter.

Make it an attractive job and they’ll do it. But nah, you’d prefer poor immigrants to take those jobs because you don’t have the money to pay locals properly.

The ones who like Tate and Reform are entitled poor me brats.

They are sexist, racist brats. And the poison is spreading no doubt.

Many people won't work because they get more on benefits, not connecting you wok your way up. That is entitled brat. You battle through a couple of years work to earn enough to get a starter car. You take extra shifts do weekend gardening. You work like a bastard at the beginning for very little reward.

Not sit at home being convinced the removing female reproductive rights and throwing out brown doctors is the answer to all your life's woes.

wastingtimeonhere · 05/12/2024 07:27

Try being a youngish man unless you earn extremely well, housing is difficult to get, no help. If you are a father and separate from your partner/ wife, unless you can afford housing, your relationship with your kids will go as you have nowhere for the kids. You then get called deadbeat when you can't afford to fund 2 sets of households. No assistance to help. Under mid-30s, the best you can hope for is a shared house, with no control over who you share with.
Girls out perform boys in school. The curriculum was adapted to help girls when the opposite was the case, now boys are left behind ( as a class, not individually)
Mental health provision is dire. Young men have the highest risk of suicide.
Add, seeing news reports of young men from elsewhere being housed in hotels, getting resources they cant and you have a recipe for young men to feel aggrieved regardless of accuracy of the reports that they see.

WhatNoRaisins · 05/12/2024 07:34

I do think a lot of people feel very disillusioned. I think it can make you want something different without really considering whether the different is actually any better, you just want something different.

I'm not always convinced that by working hard for little at the start necessarily means you'll always be better off later. It's like those posts telling you to get a better paid job or the ones convinced that everyone can progress at work. You can't, there are only so many better paid jobs and a lot of low paid ones.

And still people come out with this shit. No, a single white male with no dependants and no care needs will not get more than if they worked. Particularly if they are 'choosing to live off benefits' as they will be sanctioned to kingdom come if not actively seeking work and attending job centre appointments.

The housing element of UC only covers full rent of a third of private rentals and most landlords won't accept UC as the sole income. There is a social housing shortage.

People continuously spreading this bilge are as bad as those blaming all the immigrants.

The tories have done that for the last 14 years. Resulting in many disabled people actually dying. How's it turned out?

Sskka · 05/12/2024 07:49

It seems pretty obvious to me why this is happening? Society has become very regulated in a touchy-feely way. Men hate that, they value risk, strength, improvisation and autonomy a lot more. Especially young men, because what else do they have to offer? Of course they’re going to want to break the current consensus, because it offers them nothing.

frozendaisy · 05/12/2024 07:55

@wastingtimeonhere you can get basic housing on a average wage

If you can't see your kids, that perhaps you weren't really in a financial position to have but hey screw the consequences, you do everything you can to get in a position to see them.

You work as a hospital porter, postman, carer, warehouse hand, you work like a dig doing night and weekend shifts.

You don't look online going it's not fair.

Yes perhaps they are at a disadvantage because their parents didn't teach them resilience.

What you don't do is vote Reform, watch the financial crash for all but the extremely wealthy.

At some point you have to accept no more excuses or blame. Do something yourself about your own circumstances.

WhatTheFudges · 05/12/2024 08:01

Young men and women due to no purpose, more young men and women than ever before don’t work. I’m older and do work but I can absolutely see why a lot of them don’t as they have no purpose or reason to work as it’s not going to get them anywhere.

Older men and women due to illegal immigration, not legal, that’s largely welcomed amongst older people as we have seen the benefit of it ourselves, but illegally immigration is spiralling out of control.

Pension age population have been abandoned by labour so I imagine a lot of those will vote conservative in future.

This is generalising the age population and there will be exceptions but the majority is going/gone as the above.

Frowningprovidence · 05/12/2024 08:09

I dont think the young men I know are very reform orientated, but they are of the age where they could be sucked in. They will all vote at the next election so it's a good idea to find to find out thier thinking. Tiktok etc is a huge influence. They diont read papers or watch bbc.

It's fair to say there are a lot of very disillusioned people out there, who feel like they have no future or part of society and yes they are blaming the wrong people but it's not as if the main two parties are offering anything to them.

Ihavearedbag · 05/12/2024 08:15

The whole premise of this thread and others is that they are wrong. Young men voting reform and young women voting green are two sides of the same coin - that being the realisation that labour and the tories have had the wrong ideas for 30 years and it’s time for a change. I don’t think they’re wrong.

Ihavearedbag · 05/12/2024 08:17

It is clear to anyone who lives in one of the poorer cities that bringing in a million low skilled immigrants PER YEAR and not building housing or increasing doctor / dentist / optician numbers has been a catastrophic mistake. It is not wrong for young people to see this and try to fix it with the options they have available to them (voting for parties who want radical change). The idea that if ONLY we could get them off TikTok and earnestly explain how they are wrong then they would change their minds and vote Lib Dem is really immensely patronising

We are talking about 18-21 year olds. Brexit was 10 years ago, of course they don’t remember!
