Wedding Ring Rash (Pic attached)

Hi all!

Has anyone had any success treating wedding ring rash?

I've been wearing my engagement and wedding band for a few years and suddenly in the last few months I’ve started noticing a rash. It’s sort of bumpy and red and my finger seems to swell.

I don’t wear the rings at night and it seems worse when I wear both, so I often leave off the engagement ring.

Both rings are 9ct gold.

Wondered if anyone knows what causes it to flare and if anyone has any treatment recommendations.

Pic attached! All advice/thoughts much appreciated!

x

I get soreness if I let water sit under my rings. Might be that.

I did wonder if it’s to do with not drying hands properly or hand cream.

Following with interest. This happens to me and as as result I've not worn my rings since the pandemic. All the handwashing and sanitising has left the skin there sensitive even with the rings off!

I get this too, Aveeno is great, although it says for very dry skin it seems to be the only thing that works for me.

MaybeBaby2024 · 04/12/2024 09:48

I’ve recently started getting this too. It is dermatitis caused by moisture. So if the skin under the ring doesn’t get dried properly after hand washing it starts to get irritated.

Gingernaut · 04/12/2024 09:48

Do you react to other metals?

There may be a high nickel content

You may need a barrier cream or coating the ring with nail polish or varnish

FuckItItsFine · 04/12/2024 09:49

Looks like dermatitis from not drying properly. Take ring off when you wash hands etc and dry thoroughly. Use hand cream.

Toooldforlonghair · 04/12/2024 10:12

I get this. It's worse in summer when sweating. Best solution is to take ring(s) off indoors and wear on a chain round neck if you don't want to be seen without them. I then treat the sore patch with a tiny amount of hydrcortisone cream applied once or twice a day and lots of hand cream after every wash. It usually clears up. To help prevent further outbreaks, use gentle soap, and moisturise after every wash. I also find a bit of Sudocreme under the ring helps as it provides a protective barrier.

Ineedanewsofa · 04/12/2024 10:20

I got this when I was pregnant and my rings were too tight so moisture got trapped underneath. I now always take my rings off and dry my hands and underneath the rings before popping back on. I also only use handcream when I not going to put my rings back on for a while

sharpclawedkitten · 04/12/2024 10:23

I used to get that but it was with a silver ring, and it was if I got orange juice around it.

My gold rings don't do it, although I take them off quite a bit, which might help to avoid reactions.

CitiesInDust · 04/12/2024 10:34

I should add, this is the hand cream that helps

Contact dermatitis. I get it every winter and often have to take my ring off for a few days. The best cream for me is E45 anti itch cream, it's magic and gets rid of it in days.

mumoftwo1981 · 04/12/2024 10:38

I got this from mine and realised soap product was getting in the grooves on the inside when I was my hands. Didn't wear my rings for a few days and soaked them both in dish soap, gave them a scrub with a toothbrush and I was fine after that x

VanCleefArpels · 04/12/2024 10:44

I had exactly this after wearing my yellow gold wedding ring for 25 years!! Dr Google told me that you can become allergic to gold because of additives (or something!). My solution was to have a Platinum ring made to replace it - Platinum is the least allergenic precious metal apparently - which actually turned out well as several other rings I have are white gold so they now match!

me too and for the same reason. I bought some hydrocortisone cream and wore my rings on a necklace for about a week, and it worked. It flares up again occasionally if I'm not careful about drying my hands properly after washing them

If the rings were bought in the EU or UK there should be no nickel content. It’s been banned from jewellery alloys sold here for many years. It’s not impossible to be allergic to one of the other alloys metals but it is much rarer than nickel allergy.

Moisture is the most likely culprit - have you changed any products recently? You may be reacting to traces trapped under the rings.

brbg2g · 04/12/2024 10:56

Contact dermatitis. Clean the rings to remove any soap residue etc and rinse/ dry thoroughly each time you wash your hands. A hydrocortisone cream will heal it up if it is painful.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 04/12/2024 10:56

Contact dermatitis.

I had a massive flare when we were obsessive with hand sanitiser and I can't wear my rings anymore.

LookItsMeAgain · 04/12/2024 11:12

Could you buy a ring in silver to see if you get the same issue (even with the water/sweat getting trapped under it)? Work out if the ring metal might also be contributing to the rash.
I have 18ct gold rings and I never have an issue and never have to take them off. I'm wondering if the amount of gold to base metal in the ring might be contributing to the rash for you.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 04/12/2024 11:39

I've found that liquid soap makes my contact dermatitis worse. Bog standard bar soap seems to improve matters though possibly because it forces you to take off your rings and get the soap out of the jewellery :)

GetDownkeith · 04/12/2024 11:46

I had this with my old ring white gold ring. At first I thought it was moisture getting underneath took it off got it all cleared up and then put rings back on took them off in house etc etc. had to stop wearing the ring in the end and now wear one of a different metal have worn it for more years and no reaction. If I put the old one back on for too long it reacts again.

don’t know whether some of these rings are coated in something that wears away over time meaning some of us react to them eventually but in my case it was almost certainly the alloy ratio and now I have a different metal ring I have no problems.

I’ve been using ciclafate (sp?) as a barrier but will look at other options too.

I don’t appear to react to other metals, or 9ct gold normally. It’s so annoying it’s happened with these rings!

I’ll investigate the nickel angle too…

I did wonder this. I went for 9ct because I like to mix gold and silver jewellery, but I might explore getting a back up ring in 18 ct gold or something to switch in. (Good excuse to get more jewellery!)
